We walked toward one another I could tell he wanted to wait till I walked past him so he could take me from the rear haha. He got past me turned a round and I was standing looking at him face to face. I will never forget the fear in his eyes. I do the opposite of what he says. Some people are just crazy. A creepy guy in a parking lot took one look at me, balled up his fists and started snarling like an animal stomping toward me. I’ve never seen him in my life, he was clearly not right. My firearm was in my hotel room, but I had my trained Rottweiler out to potty. I commanded Baron to take over, and the man snapped out of it and circled wide. I saw him two more times near my hotel, he had the same reaction. I’m so glad I added my dog to my self security, I can’t recommend a trained dog enough!

After you break eye with someone staring at you, look to the side, don't look down. Looking down is a sign of submission.

Context is important. Regardless of which direction you choose to avert your gaze, the initial glance is most important. If your food is in front of you, it's perfectly reasonably to glance back down. Just don't do it sheepishly. Hold their stare for a moment, then slowly roll your eyes back down to your food. It's not the looking down, it's the manner in which you do it.

Distance is key. I remember going home late at night, and a group of 5 men with a certain look, came towards me on the sidewalk. I immediately went over the road to the other sidewalk and kept walking. When they passed on the other side of the road one of them threw a bottle. He was yelling, ready to fight. But I kept on walking fast. The extra 20 meters I allready had was quickly 100 meters and he did not follow. Distance is key. It wouldnt have helped no matter how confident I walked if I had been on the same sidewalk as them, and fighting 5 arent gonna go well 99% of the time.

My dad is a former Marine and Vietnam vet. He always taught me to be very aware of my surroundings at all times and to keep my head on a swivel. I’ve taught my kids and grandkids the same. I’ve also taught my daughter that when she’s in a parking lot, going to or from her car, don’t be digging in her purse or get distracted. Pay attention to what’s going on around you. Great video.

I love my martial arts. Even is you walk with confidence, there are those who will still try and melt you down by staring. Doesn't work on me. The confidence thing worked in my favor late one night. I was with a group of friends in a convenience store and walked away from them to order food from a touch screen. When I finished ordering and turned around there were 4 large men standing behind me, intentionally blocking my path. I'm a 5'4'" 115 lb woman. I could see they were trying to intimidate me so I looked each one in the eye, smiled, and said "Excuse me." and pretended I was comfortable despite them "looming" over me. They looked confused and stepped aside to allow me to pass. I don't know that that would work in any situation, but I think they expected a different reaction and weren't prepared for that.

I was waiting on a banch outside of a mall for my husband to pick me up and a gang of teenage boys came over and draped themselves all over the bench, chatting me up. When I was training for my job (I was a bodyguard and security dog handler), my instructor (a former "UK Navy Seal,", actually he was a former UK SBS, Royal Marines Special Forces, it was in New Zealand) told me : "Show weakness, you get aggression. Some years ago I was in a NYC subway terminal waiting for the train. Only been to NY 10-15 times, by no means am I comfortable there. While waiting, a group of young urbans who were eyeing me. I looked at them, then looked away, but only with my eyes turning about 30° away from them without moving my head, and doing the slow blink as my eyes moved away lol. I’m a very little guy (5’3”) but in strong physical shape. I’m also very non-violent, I hate violence and refuse to carry weapons. However, I also refuse to be a victim and be assaulted. The shortest of the group came up to me and asked me where to find some random street (I got the idea that they may have been trying to discern if I was a resident or tourist). I just said “I don’t know” with the stone coldest look I could muster, and did the same thing - looked slightly away but only with my eyes. I was convinced he wanted to harm me, either for money or to prove something since he was also short. To this day, I’m also convinced that my attitude kept me from an assault. I know I sent the message that I didn’t fear him because I didn’t (even though I did fear the group). But I was also really happy when I got out of there unscathed.

Excellent advice!! It works. I make outside, night deliveries in funky neighborhoods and carrying myself the way you talked about has kept me safe 30+ years. Never look weak, walk around with head high like you own the place. I get where they test me, two or three walk towards me... I start walking towards them... they don't know what to think at that point, but messing with me is no longer their choice. I usually get a " hey" or "how's it goin?" from them and I just nod while looking straight at them. It does work!!

61 here. i got jumped by a pack of goons (white guys, as am i) when i was 18 in seattle. the cop i flagged down only cared about my malfunctioning headlight and not the cut on my head. she wrote me a ticket, and wouldn't take the report. lesson 1: YOU are your own first responder. if it were legal to carry a firearm, i would have and do now. if it were to happen again (God forbid) i'd smoke those motherfuckers and sleep just fine, and wait for the cops to WANT to take a report at that point, to which they'll get my attorney's bidness card.

I keep my head up , chin up and have never been jumped God help him/her if he or she did I have a hell of a paperweight with a sight on his nuts and liver if it ever comes to it. Great advice Jason. When I’m in public, my head is always on a swivel and always mindful of the OODA loop. Criminals may always be looking for a victim, but I’m always looking for a potential aggressor. Posture and bearing can certainly indicate if you’re “willing “ to be prey. I will never look for a fight, but I will make an aggressor wish they picked someone else for their predation.

Good Advice. I always maintain situation awareness, and am not afraid to maintain eye contact, maybe a bit too long, but then I'm a big guy, a former Marine and combat instructor, as well as being armed. Some might think me a bit pugnacious, I personally think I just have that don't mess with vibe. Years ago I took a friend and her 3 teenage daughters on a hike. As we approached the trail shelter, there were 5 sketchy looking guys hanging out at the picnic table, which had a case of beer, some liquor bottles, and some paraphernalia visible. They were throwing bowie knives and tomahawks against a tree. As we came into sight, they started muttering amongst themselves and looking us over. I acknowledged them with a nod and a little small talk. More looking and muttering, and after a bit one of them started walking somewhat our way with a knife in his hand. Not brandishing it or being overtly threatening, just seeing how we would react I think. I casually stretched and moved to scratch my lower back, which pulled back my light jacket, and revealed a double stack 45 on my belt. Mr. testing us guy saw the gun, looked up at me, and I hit him with a hard stare. He quickly turned away, walked back to his boys, a little more muttering, some furtive looks, but the whole dynamic had changed. I never touched my weapon, no theatrics. Nodded at them, told them to have a good one and headed back down the trail, of course watching behind. Would something have gone down if I hadn't been armed? I'll never know, but I do know what did happen, which was nothing. I was glad to be armed, and also glad that I gave him the look of "I see you, I'm not scared, and I'm prepared to deal with you if need be." One of only a very few instances in my civilian life where I think being armed made a difference, most of the time it's just insurance.

I learned to do exactly what Jason said about acknowledging stares from weird people long ago. I usually look at them in the eye for a few seconds, nod my head, smile slightly without showing my teeth, I say hi to them, and THEN turn away after a few more seconds. I let them know that I know they’re there. Haven’t had any problems.

Similarly to your Subway incident. Many years ago I was eating in a fast food joint. (I do not remember were exactly.) I noticed some dude staring at me just like you described. Dude was clearly trying to intimidate me. So, I decided that the straw on my drink was just a tad too long. So I made sure he was still watching while I pulled out my knife (a Cold Steel Ti-lite) and cut the straw down to a better size. (This is something that my youngest daughter would insist that I do for her every time she had a kid sized drink with a full length straw.) I then locked eyes with him as I closed the knife back up and placed it on the table next to my meal. He no longer was very interested in giving me the "Hairy eyeball". About a decade before that, my wife, oldest daughter (about 3 at the time) and I went on a little vacation trip to Santa Monica (We are not from California) I was shocked at the time about how many homeless there were there. As we were walking back to our rental car off of the Santa Monica Pier a couple of 20-30 something year old homeless bums hit me up for some "spare cash". I flatly said NO! and just kept on walking with my wife and daughter.. I then noticed that the one who had asked for the $ was now following us and was clearly agitated and muttering something. As we were just about to re-enter the parking lot, I handed my wife the keys and told her to head to the car. I then stopped, turned around and folded my arms while he was still approaching. Realizing that the intimidation was not working he then stopped, muttered some more insults, (I assume) and slowly began to walk back to his "flop spot". I waited until he was sitting back down, then proceeded to walk back to the car and my family. This was really my very first encounter with homeless people. I am VERY cautious around them now and pretty much anybody who is just hanging around public spaces without a clear reason to be there. Thanks for sharing the tips and experiences !

I am wary of homeless as well, especially on the subway. I was told by reliable sources that many of them are mentally ill, addicted, alcoholic or some combination therof. Most seem non-threatening but they do often seem to want money. Lots I have seen have cigarrettes, expensive shoes and a nice current phone. I don't care for the ones begging outside the bank or the liquor store, I also don't like the self-appointed door holders. I have also heard of more than one beggar with a racket that made "About 100 on a bad day and 300 on a good one." Those were neither addicted nor mentally ill...One offered a friend of mine a franchise. He said "I'll tell you what to say and do, get you set up, just give me 10%."

I did almost what you said on this video back on 2009, a guy pointed a gun to my face, and he wanted me to walk on a dark alley, I told him, I was not gonna walk and that possibly he was gonna shoot me once but I was gonna grab him and throw him to the moving cars, his hand started trembling and I was ready to get shot at least on my shoulder since he was smaller size, then they started dirty talking at me again, and I told him once again, you'll shoot me once, but after that I will kill you, he put his gun down and I started to walk away without losing eye contact. I'm glad I'm able to tell this story now, so I agree with what you say, it does work.

Back in my early 20's, my wife said her coworkers found me attractive because I walked with a purpose. Not arrogance, just that I projected I can handle myself. I tend to walk fast and scan as I do such naturally. It does work. I have been to dozens of countries and just be me. Being former military and law enforcement, we look for certain things anyway. This is VERY effective. I have very rarely had to draw my sidearm even as an officer due to posture and demeanor. Body language dictated that I meant business. It was also unintentional. I always tried to be kind to everybody of which I interacted, even if being arrested. You don't have to be a bully, but look confident in your ability to handle situations.

Words to live by. I have never been mugged or targeted as far as I know but I actually learned from my Mum about personal security. We are not allowed to carry pepper spray in Australia, but I always seem to have a sample bottle of hair spray about me. I am in my 60's now and I'll hang onto every advantage I can get. There seemed to be a bit of a contradiction at one point in the video. At the part where he mentioned the survey where members of the public where filmed on the street, and shown to prisoners, he said; "In almost every case, the prisoners said they'd pick the confident person with his head high." Words to that effect. Then went on to say not to look sheepish. While the point of looking confident being the best policy was made clear in this video, at that point there seemed to be a slip of the tongue. Surely the prisoners would have actually said that they WOULDN'T pick the confident looking person as a victim.

Good advice. Many years ago I left a bar at 3am and decided to walk home. Half way through the Parramatta Mall [Sydney] that was totally deserted, a group of about a dozen young thugs [Middle Eastern and Pacific Islanders] suddenly appeared around a corner heading in my direction. Immediately I sensed the group were waiting to see how their 'leader' would react. When we were at our closest, about 50' away, I looked over at them, gave a nod without breaking stride. The 'leader' gave me a nod in return and that was that. 24 hours later the local newspaper had a report of a bashing and robbery of a 30yo guy in the Parramatta Mall at 3.15am. A mate who ran security at the bar assumed from the description that I was the victim. He couldn't understand how I escaped unharmed. At 15yo I was a street kid in the red-light district Kings Cross. That's where I learnt; don't walk like a victim and certainly don't walk with an arrogant swagger. Walk with purpose as if you're meant to be there, like you belong.

At 15yo I was a little kid at only 5'2" [I was a late grower; by 18yo I was over 6' tall] Sounds to me like you learnt to walk with confidence like you were meant to be wherever you are. The thing that I learnt during my time on the streets was that those who target those that are smaller than themselves are cowards of the worst kind. The few times when a pack of older bigger guys tried to stand over me for my tobacco and money [It starts off with the demand "Give us a smoke c#nt" that signals their intent to take everything you've got] I ran to a doorway or a stairwell where the thugs could only attack one at a time. I was a feisty little bugger back then and would not roll over for anyone. If they wanted a smoke that bad they'd have to work for it. Every single time they looked at each other, laughed and walked away.

[Driving Northern beaches was crazy enough] What I found was a massive difference in attitude. The Manly-Warringah kids were a bunch of disrespectful a-holes, generally speaking. If one of the passengers turned on you his mates would back him. Driving out West on the other hand, they had empathy for the working man. I'm from Detroit there's predators everywhere here. I've grown eyeballs in the back of my head from living here 50 years. I've been shot at and I've been robbed. I've gotten out of a few predicaments by making eye contact and not backing away. 99% of the time you show them your ready to fight they back down. I was taking my Chihuahua for a walk. There were a few hood rats sitting on the porch. Kid jumped up all cocky and started approaching me. I stopped and gave him the death stare. I was thinking you mess with me or my dog I will mess you up. As soon as I stopped walking and gave him the stare. He turned around and went and had a seat. It wasn't the first or the last time I was tested. Thankfully I do know how to fight and I'm a big guy. I don't carry a gun. I have schizophrenia and can't buy one.

@davidibarra7854 Yeah, I had a similar upbringing. I was a skinny, weak kid. It wasn't attitude adjustment that changed my situation, though. It's that I got my growth spurt a bit earlier than the other kids and I got bigger and stronger than them. Also I was learning to box. I still wasn't the toughest kid around, but there was some fight in me. Attacking me was not going to be pain-free, so the predators found softer targets. And I kept on training for the next 20 years because I started to enjoy it.

Very good advice. I have used it many times (before hearing it from Jason), especially in crowded areas like train stations. Make eye contact. I even add in a slight smile, sometimes. Maybe a head nod. And I know that I will defend myself to my last breath. With whatever tool I have on my person. Also, always position yourself to advantage, meaning nobody can sneak up behind you or surround you easily. Never sit with your back to a door, never sit in front of a window if you can help it, always know where all the exits are and where they lead, and always position yourself so you have the best view/situational awareness possible. That means you need to be able to see the doors, the cash register, the restrooms, the workers, what’s going on outside, and other people. If you can’t do these things in a particular space, don’t go into that space! You’re hemmed up and trapped!

I saw 2 guys in their late teens make eye contact from across the street about 150 ft away who then crossed the street coming towards us. There weren’t many people on the street and I knew what was potentially about to happen. I told my wife to keep 1/2 step behind me and she was already on the outside. As they got closer, I glanced at them with my “don’t try it” look. They passed us and we crossed the street. Nothing happened but they were sizing me up to decide if they were going to try to rob us.

Good stuff! I was walking back to my hotel in Washington DC late at night. Got turned around and was suddenly lost. Turned down a dark empty street with no sidewalks in the direction of the Embassy Suites. Halfway down the block, here comes three guys in the street towards me. I fought the urge to turn around and kept walking straight towards them. As we closed within about thirty feet, I put my right hand in my pocket and continued straight on. When we were twenty feet away, they split, two on one side, the third on the other. I walked right through the gauntlet, head high, like Bruce Willis. My heart was pounding but I hid my fear. We passed and I never looked back, just kept walking. I know I got away with something that night. I’m convinced it was acting confident that got me through.

Santa Monica, CA. Early morning walk. Two guys, not from the area sized me up for a strong arm robbery. I simply looked at them, squared my shoulders and walked confidently between them. I knew which one I would take first. The next morning, same walk, a guy stopped me, said he had seen me walk through them . . . and he was robbed. His body language said it all. 1. yes on carrying a pen. 2. I am older and will now also carry a 14 inch long 304 stainless steel thin wire with loops on the end. You fold it up and put it in a pocket and it will not cut you or your clothes. However, when you hit someone with the loop, it is going to be as bad as being hit with a Cossack short whip.

Great video! I was a young thug and would stare at people just waiting for them to escalate the situation. It’s key to be aware and hold your ground but make sure not to move the tension up which will trigger the inevitable at that point. Just stay calm and let the storm pass without ego and all will be averted most of the time. That’s a win for you.

There is also something that has worked well for me when being stared at whilst standing. Ignore the stare for just a few moment then discretely move over and stand right to the side of that person and see if they are staring at you at close quarters. Look them calmly back in the face at close distance with no emotion and most will move their stare away. Because you have pushed them out of their comfort zone and done something they were not expecting!

What is fairly clear is that there will always be a risk in any response when you are dealing with a thug or Psychopath? It is a gamble which ever way you choose to deal with it? Though I agree that in some instances a calm and solid look back might work for a few, but sadly NOT in all cases. Ultimately you might be forced to deal with it in a more assertive manner. So many years ago I ran my own Thai Boxing Club. But I agree this does not make you indestructible! So I suppose my point that you might need to understand; is that some people will still want to have a go despite giving a long distance twitch of confidence!

I got mugged in Waikiki once by two guys at an ATM right on the main strip in broad daylight. Luckily for me there were three Marines right next door who saw it going down and jumped into the fray. The muggers ended up bloody and on the ground when suddenly they were overwhelmed! They got nothing from me as I broke my ATM card when they came at me. I never saw the muggers coming as they had been hiding around a corner and bum rushed me. I ended up with a torn shirt and a few scratches. I have always been more self aware since then. Always be sure of your surroundings and a never deny yourself an exit ramp.

Went in, got a coffee, standing outside waiting for a lift and these two guys walked past and (don't know why) one stops and just stares at me drinking this coffee. I stare back. He says "you going to do something?" I replied with "don't know, am I?" He looked down at the pavement and told me to...leave..in a less polite manner. He shambles off and I continued with my coffee. Normal day. Doesn't bother me but your explanation is perfect and is something they get into training now. Walk with purpose and confidence and be very aware of your surroundings i.e. entrances, exits, obstacles and such. Not even for defence but just any emergency situation. Well said chief! It amazes me that people do this. Of course, I'm old enough that I helped _create_ "smart phones", so I grew up without them. Perhaps this gives me a different perspective - I was in my early 20s before the first commercial cell towers were deployed - very sparsely - around the SF Bay Area... and they used some insane wattage, multi-mile rural towers down near Gilroy. I tested a bulky Panasonic "handset and block over-the-shoulder" unit back then for my defense contractor company, and it was so powerful it blanked out my car stereo on locking onto an incoming call. The ring came out of the car speakers... and of course there was no "cellular" circuits in my AM/FM cassette stereo at all. It just resonated with the wiring in the car. But... rules for driving: Always lock doors as soon as you get in the car, before even belting up, and keep windows up. If it's really hot, just open the windows a little bit (unless driving at full speed down a highway, I suppose) or use the A/C if you have it. Don't let anyone have the chance to reach in and open the doors from the outside. And most of all... after parking at your destination, collect and organize your belongings *before* doing anything else. Before shutting off the engine, before opening the doors. Prepare to secure your vehicle immediately on exit - many cars allow you to lock all the doors as soon as the driver door is cracked; use this feature. Then, _before_ opening the (locked) door, survey your surroundings - carefully. Look at any people around you, especially in a public lot. Examine your path you want to walk, looking for people behaving oddly, potential hiding places, potential cover, and so forth. Once you have assessed the surroundings, only _then_ shut down the engine, open up the vehicle and exit. This sounds like a lot, but it really isn't - only a couple of seconds once you get the hang of the "quick assessment scan". Use your car's mirrors and windows, swivel your head all around. Just takes a second or two. The point is to be *aware*, and to remain so. Keep your head on a swivel as you move to your destination. Being at least minimally armed (with what depends on the State you live in), but anything is far better than nothing. You don't need to be paranoid... just conscious and aware, and not distracted. And keep your damn phone in the vehicle or a pocket. It is of no use while walking, so ignore it.

If inside a store, bank or casino and you notice someone who is discreetly following you watching you and sizing you up while they're talking on a phone, I can almost guarantee there is a partner outside the store entrance on the other side of the inside phone. The inside store person is deciding if you're worth it for a robbery in parking lot or a follow home robbery.

I taught my kids when they were young to always look at their surroundings especially inside a building because the opportunity to escape if need be is lessened. Always look for an exit and quickly size anyone and everyone. Now that they are all adults I get blamed in a nice way that dad made “us paranoid” in a crowd. But that assailant doesn’t get to know what weapons I’ve got. Why give him that information? He can choose to leave me alone, or roll the dice and find out the hard way.

Talk about this all the time with fellow workers. We work in some rough areas of Detroit. I have trained pretty extensively in hand to hand combat. Armed and unarmed. The biggest thing I always tried to instill in the people I was training is never to look like a victim.

100% correct, my friend. On occasion when I thought an unsavory character was sizing me up I'd simply face them with eye contact and a blank face, then smirk and continue with business as usual. When I'd look back, like leaving the cashier in a convenience store they were either interested in someone else or gone. Also, keep your head on a swivel - look around. Be aware. If you think about it, Jason, teach folks how to take a perp off his feet when they are aggressively approaching you with intent. Thanks!

Some people who don’t know what they are talking about are making assumptions that if someone looks at you they want to fight. Unless you are in prison and your cell mate Bruno is staring at you, it is important to keep in mind you could be wrong in that maybe the dude is lost in thought or looking at someone nearby to where you are sitting. They are not always looking at you so don’t over react. We all know people misread situations so maybe things are cool. Always important to take the good advice said in this video but worth noting too that you could be wrong and to keep calm.

So many videos out there demonstrating crap, I thank you for not teaching people to do crazy stuff. I agree with what you say but I would take weapons out of the picture. If you come into a situation where you need them, it's too late. Unless you have to be in an area where weapons are common. You correctly say to acknowledge the situation showing that you are confident and that you are not afraid. I find it crucial not to overdo it. Do not provoke. Let a bridge for the other guy (assuming it's a guy), to "escape". Do not force him do something out of pride. Show him that you are not afraid, but don't make it a challenge. Let the situation be seen like he can tell later to his girlfriend or friends that he just let you go. Don't say a word. He will know that you are not afraid, but he will later tell others that you were afraid. I practice martial arts for over 40 years. I came sometimes in situations like this. Never had to have any physical contact. Many people wrote great comments like, situational awareness, being assertive without being aggressive, and many more. Just my humble opinion, thank you.
