Jason, Great Job - best video I have seen on prepping a new bat. My annoyance with new bats is the information provided by the manufacturer and how much of a variation is given... even with my new Puma bat - there are two labels and each says something different in regards to oiling and whether you need to oil where a face guard is fitted. Always think the traditional ways are best!

mar504 helps stop it breaking and cracking, but all bats nowadays are pressed and it’s only really the edges that need any sort of attention.it won’t make you Chris Gayle overnight like everyone seems to think.
@fransreks8743

Well, common sense tells you the thinner the grains the younger and weaker the tree. The fatter the grains the older the tree. That's why more grains will break easier.

Hi ... Is oiling needed to soften the willow surface or to seal the moisture in? I see u started by saying its to seal the moisture. If that's true shouldn't you oil the entire bat(exposed area)? Oil really doesn't soften the wood, does it? It hardly penetrates into the wood.

Hi Jason, nice informative video..Too bad you are too far away from India to give my 8 year old sons bat for knocking... However I have a query, I brought a SG bat and it has a butter paper cover on top on the business area of the bat... My question is... 1-do I have to peel of that paper before oiling n knocking....? 2- Shall I put that paper back on after I am done with oiling n knocking? 3- Is it necessary to put that paper always on the bat?? Thanks in advance

That is exactly why kashmir willows have more and smaller grains because those trees are not cultivated on purpose. English willows come from plantation and that is why they have bigger evenly spaced grains and springy response.

Sound waves don’t break bats. Impact does. The lack of structural support at the toe due to being at the end of the grain and having less ‘meat’ behind it is why bats crack there.

Hi Jason! I'm 14 and I just got a gray nicolls a few days ago for £200 (About 250$) it's pretty good and it came with a scuff sheet put on so I can't oil it. It does say that it is pre-prepared and hen I hit it with a seam of the ball there was no mark and I hit it a few times. So do u think it's ready for a net session? It has around 7 grains. I have a cricket match for under 14 tmrw aswell and I was hoping I could use it. I usually come in 4th. I did kno it personally for about an hour
@Josh3012
@Josh3012 7 жыл бұрын
I have used pre-knocked bats at a similar price with no extra knocking in, so you should be fine. I would trust Gray Nicolls to have knocked it in properly for you. You can apply a *very small* amount of oil with a soft cloth to the wood that isn't covered by the scuff sheet. You should do this once before every season. If you are worried you can always knock your bat in yourself before the net session! Extra knocking in doesn't hurt your bat.
