Nice job Jason, you are doing a great service for the Tonex community. This input trim thing really raises the question as to why IK allowed this to be a thing.

Truly a good video, but forgive my ignorance, I didn't quite understand what and how the first test-generator was set up. I don't have Cubase. I guess this can be set up in any daw, but what exactly do I set up. What does the voltmeter measuring? what goes into the instrument 1 input of the digital interface? I apologize, I didn't undersatnd how to set it up. Anyone can explain? THANK YOU.

Good video! I’ve found that generally, there is a reason for default settings, haha. First thing I did for each of my TONEX’s was check the input trim and set it 0.0. I haven’t had any issue getting any captures to be exactly what I needed them to be. As you said, the gain knob can do so much for the sound of your capture. But beyond that too, if you’re really wishing you could push a capture that much harder, maybe you should just use a higher gained capture and make your life easier lol.

First of all thank you for uploading these incredible informative videos about Tonex. I wanna say that I'm a home recorder who wants to get the most out of it . This calibrating stuff is very interesting but I'm no audio engineer as most of us aren't . We used to set our Interface input gain so that is was not clipping. That is what the compagnies said was the best thing to do. Lately there is much of a discussion how to set your interface level properly. The latest Rhett Shull and john Nathan Cordy videos talked about this matter a lot but that was all about Neural DSP stuff but it relates to other amp sims also. You talk about dBu and dBfs and headroom and calibrating the pedal but IMHO you're gonna way to fast for a lot of people out there, including myself. Firstly I want to calibrate my own Interface , the Tonex pedal comes later. I managed to get a 0,775V AC voltage out of my Motu M4 output with my test generator set in reaper at -10.1 db. And then I lost you ... I have to feed this signal to into the input of the Motu M4 if I understand correctly but what am I aiming for? Sure I'm missing something here ,I am not meaning to be rude or something but a tutorial for dummies would be welcome if it's possible.

I really can't make it any easier than I did in the video unfortunately. You are on the right track. Now take the 0 dbu signal you have coming out of your interface and plug that into your Instrument in on your M4. After that check what dbfs level that is on that input in Reaper. I aim for -11 or -12 dbfs. Once you have that that will equal in and around having Input Trim on your pedal set to -3.0 db. Hope that helps :-)

Hey i have the same interface, did you ever figure this out? Thanks
@marcohermans3207
@marcohermans3207 10 ай бұрын
@@JSpurrier, yes I did. I followed the instructions from Jason and I finally found that the input gain knob needs to be set beyween 8 and 9 o clock. That equals - 11,4 dbfs in reaper.

Hi jason. Thank you. I Ann a compete beginner and struggling. I note that tonex is saying low at the level you recommend. Does low ok high not really matter?thx

Why or how does setting the test generator output to -11.99 get you to 0dBu on the line out? Is this because you know exactly how many millivolts -dBu is and you dialed the test generator output until you reached that value on the multimeter? I didn’t catch how you set this up

Amazing resource, many thanks! I tried the calibration but stumbled into a block. Im using cubase pro 13 (like you) and a Scarlett 8i6. I have generated the sinewave (at -11db) to a mono out and its measuring 0.775mV AC. But when i make tonex my interface, i cannot generate the sinewave via the other interface, as cubase cannot handle two different interfaces simultaneously. I have then used scarlett as the interface,. plugged my sinawave out into the input of tonex and sent the mono out to another input of Scarlett. The intersting thing is thst, with the tone model bypassed I get -7.5db difference (and my input trim is at 0db). I guess this could explain why it's default+8.5db?

My question is if you are using Tonex pedal in the loop of the HX Effects do you recommend still using the input trim at -3.0?

As long as you have the send to the Tonex in the loop set to instrument then it’ll hit the Tonex the same as it would if you were plugged directly into Tonex

hello man, If you are using a model captured by someone else, would you set the input trim -3db into or 0db?

So you like to roughly hit -12db with the guitar going straight into your interface to run sims ect…?

I have been experimenting with using Tonex as an overdrive pedal. However, the volume level when bypassed is higher than the instrument level guitar signal (maybe it's buffered, or simply outputting line level?). Would adjusting the input level down in the way you suggest also reduce the bypassed signal back down to instrument level?

Hi Jason, love your vids, strugling to follow this TBH, any chance you could go through it again, I know.... sorry, I have no idea what levels I run at into my AXE I/O, I usually just put it to about 9 o'clock or till to sounds good to me, how do I get this to the pedal, had it since day 1 but not gigged it yet.. cant seem to get the 2 to be consistently the same PC-Pedal

I use my ToneX live. I usually run my input at anywhere from +8 to 12.5 with my presets. Think I need to back down?

When you are using the Tonex Pedal into a computer, do you turn off the corresponding preset cab? To me it seems I am hearing both pedal and preset cabs. The gain and overdrive is massive.

If I use ToneX pedal in interface mode as my audio interface and audition different tones using 0dB input gain on ToneX software does that produce identical results while running that same tone in live mode and global input trim set to 0 ? Great content man!

Unfortunately no reply to this question, that in my opinion is very interesting. When creting presets for ToneX from a computer, I'd like to use directly the ToneX Pedal in 'Interface mode' connected to the PC using montoris (or headphones) connected to the ToneX, then creates the preset and finally transferring it to the pedal. But, once transferred on the pedal and changed to 'Live mode', it sounds different...

It would have been good to see what level the Tonex software is reporting on your input when doing a capture. I suspect that it's going to be saying 'too low' when in fact it's not too low at all. If you make a capture following the prompts for good levels from the Tonex software then that capture is going to be close to 0db and require 6-9db of input trim boost to get the same saturation. Would you agree that we should be ignoring the input level suggested by Tonex software as it's too high?
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I completely ignore the suggested input level when making captures. I talked about it in a previous video. The input level is not part of the capture process.
