Always interested in communication, signs and symbols, Jasper Johns asks the viewer over 60 years of making art to re-consider the familiar world around us which we take for granted such as flags, numbers, maps and targets. He selects, animates and re-interprets ordinary images and objects in his art, things he says 'the mind already knows'. Johns shares many interests with Robert Rauschenberg and is very influenced by the artist Marcel Duchamp, the musician John Cage and the choreographer Merce Cunningham. With a contribution from the exhibition curator Dr Roberta Bernstein, Grace and Joshua focus on some key works which illustrate his style, method and ideas.

I love Jasper Johns. Especially his Flag Paintings had a great influence on the Superblur Art Movement. Great video again by the way.

Numbers automatically evoke a value when we see them. 4 has twice the value of 2, 8 has twice the value of 4, and so on. By superimposing the numbers in "0 - 9", the numbers are stripped of their value. The viewer is then required to look at the numbers from a completely different aspect, which sets up a conflict between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Well done Mr. Johns!

Rather surprised that you didn’t mention the content of the newspaper articles that compose the flag, the political pressure to be making “patriotic” “American” art, and his frustrations with the way appalling actions were being excused by nationalist elements in the political discussions of that time.

Thanks for your interesting post. It's a fair point but time is always limited. An artist such as Jasper Johns probably merits an hour but we aim to make short films suitable for the KZbin platform.

Hi, do you have any info about his current situation? Jasper Johns turned 90 years old on May 15, and I wondered if he is still healthy and working? :)

For a very different view of the avant-gardists you praise, art lovers who have their doubts about such work might find of interest my recent book, Who Says That's Art? .
