I knew something like this was going to happen to the park. The dry summer we had, in addition to the invasive mountain pine beetle killing off the majority of Jasper's trees were perfect conditions for this fire to start. As sad as it is to say this, I think this fire will be raging for weeks on end due to the dead trees. My heart goes out to all of the firefighters working to try and contain this fire.

Jasper has finally received a steady rainfall with cooler temps tonight. We just came back from the Fire area a few minutes ago(11:30pm) and it is looking like the reprieve from the rain has made a big difference. As you know, it could still go any direction and our forests here are really not that healthy right now. New growth and a younger forest is needed.. Man has done a lot to interfere with nature in the past, but many have learned now that Forest fires do stimulate and open the forest canopy to sunlight, which ultimately stimulates more new growth. We now see some tree species reproducing, opening their cones and freeing their seeds. In areas of fairly recent fires, we are seeing wildlife flourish and new growth being very resistant to problems. Yes, our biggest concern right now are the people that are tasked with taking care of this situation and others. A lot of extra power has rolled into town today and Jasper is Ready! We are indebted to the selfless people who have made it their jobs to ensure we are all safe & okay. Thank You Ryan!

I live in Edmonton, and on a clear day you can see parts of downtown from where I live. Smoke from the fire was so bad you couldn't even see an outline of the tallest buildings downtown

With all the beetle kill in and around Jasper, everyone has been afraid of this for some time… but what can we do? Natural cycles must run their course. However humans are called to be good stewards of the earth and I honestly think selectively logging parts of the National parks would have helped prevent some of this. Something interesting, when you look at really old pictures of the area there aren’t half as many trees as there are now… On a positive note, Alberta has top notch wildfire fighters, and there aren’t that many other fires burning in Ab. right now. Hopefully we can bring to bear the full force of our wildfire teams on this fire; go get it boys! Praying for safety of Jasper town residents and for the safety of those fighting the fire.

This is such devastation. A person hates to see this happen but nature will reclaim its self in due time. Material possessions can be replaced , lives cannot. Praying no lives were not taken & everyone is safe. 🥺

Yes, it is a very powerful and potentially very dangerous situation. Much of our forest is indeed unhealthy right now as well. It has moved farther Southwest today, closer to town, but we are also witnessing much more help arriving. Thank you Sue!

Was just reading how a couple decades ago Buffalo skulls could be found on the pyramid bench above town. Back in the day the woods were definitely way less dense to allow a buffalo to live in that area. This fire will do nothing but good for rejuvenating the land and giving the wildlife new forage

Yes, You are right. Some friends just found a Buffalo Skull recently in Talbot Lake. The Buffalo were there until the 70's, we believe. They chose to migrate North. Thank You David!

The wildlife is my biggest concern 😔 I hate to be the CEO of a major insurance company once the dust settles.
