You are probably using a new version- I had the same issue. There is an advanced options tab that you should be able to expand to see the VM options.

Gotta echo all the love here. Really appreciate your effort, presentation, style, all of it, man. But why am I getting a weird null pointer/location error when running he simple code at the tutorial's outset? I'll keep digging. But if anyone else has hit this please holler.

It's because the sample.fxml file is not being copied to the target folder. By default IntelliJ doesn't copy it
