Joey, you were my music hero since I was a little child. I remember seeing you for the first time in TV with Elvin Jones and Birelli Lagrene - this concert I recorded on VHS. I cannot count how many times I've seen that concert. Seeing you live in Prague was one of the best musical experience I've ever had - and I still have your signed photo framed. You will be truly missed. You have a very special place in my music heart - I love you, Joey. It is hard to say goodbye - so rather see you later.

Joey has the B3 DOWN! I heard Jimmy Smith live multiple times. If you close your eyes when Joey plays, you’d swear Jimmy was back in town. Any musician with this level of skill and soul deserves recognition. He’s keeping a vanishing genre of jazz alive. Nice guitar and in the pocket drumming, too!

@johntechwriter
@johntechwriter 3 жыл бұрын
I’m curious whether this “new” B3 has actual tone wheel generators. I’m guessing not - they’d cost a fortune to manufacture. Then again, the starting price for a genuine, 50-year-old B3 is $10,000 and the sky is the limit.
@daveriggs2411
@daveriggs2411 Ай бұрын
Computer. You are correct on the production costs. Not only the tone wheel but each key was hand wired. Hammond was caught in a quandry; production costs were too high for profitability and computers hadn't the capacity to replace the tone wheels. Ergo, no more Hammond. Granted, Yamaha was doing some great things with FM synthesis which led to their pretty fantastic digital pianos but their efforts on the B-3 were pretty much limited to "click or no click". Sad to see Hammond go but darned glad I'll never have to move a B-3 again!

I'm agreeing with you and adding that nobody - black, white, green, or blue - who knows music says that. People who can play or listen to music with an enlightened ear don't listen for race. Miles never did. As for the rest - I feel sorry for them but don't really think much about them.

Joey is one of a very small breed of newer-generation players who have kept the Hammond B3 alive. If it wasn't for him and the likes of Barbara Dennerlein and James Taylor, the B3 would be struggling and yes, these guys are all white and from different countries. It's not about your colour or where you're from - just about how you play and whether it sounds lovely. Joey has soul and is totally at one with his instrument.

So smooth, like nothing to it, just play and enjoy it, we’ve done so many times before, second nature, another day at the office, well in this case another night in the club, the brother is in complete control of that organ, he making that thang say what he wants it to say and it’s not arguing back, the guitarist and drummer are killing it too. Sometimes for me when jazz artists cover a pop or r&b song it doesn’t sound right done in jazz, but in this case it is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! 5👍👍👍👍👍UP!!!!!
