This research is intended to investigate the characterisation of women in Indonesian folktales and analyse the role traditional Indonesian
folktale plays in creating and reinforcing stereotypical roles of women in Indonesian society. The folktales that will be used are from Java
Island, and there are 5 most popular short folktales from East Java, namely (1) Dewi Sanggalangit, (2) Ande-ande Lumut, (3) Legend of
Bromo Mountain, (4) Ken Dedes, and (5) Legend of Banyuwangi (6) Dewi Kilisuci (7) Dewi Regganis (8) Legenda Dewi Sri (9) Panji (10) Nyi Roro
Kidul.
The researcher plan to conduct a series of interviews to collect oral versions of the folktales from several storytellers linked to the Bawarasa Surya Aji
Cultural Community. The interviews will be conducted during summer in East Java, Indonesia. Then the result will become one of the resources
besides the printed version of the oral folktales themselves.
