Hi Ellis...in Indonesia there are several universities specializing in the arts, one of the majors is karawitan, this department deals with gamelan as a musical instrument, also relates to wayang and also sinden (if I'm not mistaken)... many foreigners (white skin) are studying here, they learn *gamelan, wayang, traditional dance* and so on....✌️👍

Singa Nebah is basically what in modern music sense is called "ambient music". it is most commonly played in wedding ceremonies, as background music and as a meter to guide both bride and groom walking speed as they enter the wedding hall

Dear ellis, thank you for reviewing the javanese gamelan video. In my opinion some instruments are not struck with appropriate strength and not at the right positions, such that creating out-of-order notes. The person who beats the something like drum (we call it kendang), should not only beat the kendang in harmony with other instruments but it should lead the speed and rhythm of other instruments. As a result, the overall sound of the music is less harmonious. I suggest you review the javanese gamelan played by javanese karawitan (native javanese gamelan)

The hanging instrument is called Gong, made from Brass, only the big one. Really the big one. More little hanging instrument are called Kempul. The little one on the ground called Bonang which is shorter and flat surface or Kenong which is taller and convex like instrument in the back, a little set of Kenong. A little bit difficult for foreigner to notice it. Sorry. Something is hit with little hammer is called Saron, and the side of wood that buffer it is a little higher (like a curl wood on both side). The flat side is called Demung. Saron and Demung is made from brass metal scrap. The bamboo one is called Gambang. The instrument played in the front by a woman with big pipe bamboo (like a big white candle,haha) is called Slenthem. Those Demung and Slenthem are in the front. Saron, Demung, Gambang and Slenthem are family of Balungan instrument. Then, Gendang or Kendang is usually used like drum made from cow skin on its two side, hit by hand.

Gamelan is a classic type of javanese music. There are 2 types of tones/laras, namely bulog and slero. There are 3 gameslan materials used from iron, brass and bronze. What's best in the tone is bronze. 1 set of gamelan consists: 1. drum/kendang (drum/kendang spong/keplak, jaipong, big), 2. gong (gong suwuk, caulking/kempul and gede), 3. tonong/kenong 4. bonang (bonang babon and penerus/successor), 5. kind of crab: clove/demung, aaron/saron, , spectre/peking, 6. slentem, 7. gambang 8. gender, 9.. rebab, 10. daisies/siter 11.. flutes/seruling

Hi Elis... Thanks for your aprreciation on Indonesian Traditional Instruments. In Indonesia that Instruments are spread whole Province. The type of tempo and genre also different. In Java it calls Gamelan and the tempo more slowly and relaxing. In Bali it calls Gamelan too and the speed tempo is high but the different is that Bali use small cymbal that sound "cek cek cek" And use seruling (recorder) from bamboo. In West Sumatera my home town village it calls "TALEMPONG" the speed tempo is high and use small Bamboo Seruling "BANSI" and unique Big bamboo calls "SALUANG". Saluang are unique because it's no hole on mouth and using half lips to push and half more for inhale and exhale continuesly (unrest). That's why to plays this instruments is so difficult. A Saluang player can play about 5-10 minutes continues without space to take normal breath.

FYI : on another side of this world, in Moscow & UK, there're local Javanese Gamelan groups by those own local people. For moscow, the group calls "Gamelan Dadali Moscow" I don't remember group name for the UK.

Kita hanya belum ada bukti yang kuat saja meskipun latar pendukung di keadaan masyarakat sekarang sangat besar. Logam sebagai senjata (api) di Indonesia barulah muda.. baru masuk setelah invasi Mongol ke pulau Jawa dan ditiru dan diproduksi oleh orang Jawa kemudian menyebar ke Sumatra, semenanjung, Lombok, Makassar sehingga cepat berkembang meski baru.

Lancaran Singa Nebah, Lancaran (Lancar) is the most easy note to play gamelan. It's just repeat over and over until the last gong. We use it to practice for beginners. Listen to more advance Javanese gamelan music it's not just a repetitive or simple. It's will be more dynamic and have more unique sounds to listen. I recommend listen like Srepeg Mataraman, Gendhing Gati from Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, or maybe listen to gamelan music from Wayang Kulit or Wayang Wong performance. It's more than just Lancaran Singa Nebah.

This is a pentatonic composition. Scale arrangement 1 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 6 - 7 You can use any initial tone as long as the tone arrangement is like this. Example: e f - g - a - b c - d. This is the composition of the pelog scale. Is it understandable? Hopefully.
