I tried to find out why we use a dollar sign to evaluate expressions, but I didn't find anything about it. But I have a theory. The dollar sign often evaluates expressions. e-VALUE-tes. Just like the dollar indicates value assigned to an item. It's quite possible that it's not the origin of the $, but I think it's a nice mnemonic nonetheless
