I read Lihaaf in college and I was stunned that something that bold was written decades ago by a women when general public did not know about homosexuality. Ismat Chughtai is a legend.

I have written a 50 page essay on Ismat Chughtai in Urdu, covering my memories with her. I knew her personally as well as a fan of her works. In this interview I learn with surprise and not a little sadness that her daughter Seema has passed away. I wonder if there was some way to let Javed Akhtar Sahib have a copy of my article on Ismat.

I thing in Javed Sahaab case interview should only end when he say it is end. Otherwise there shouldn't be any time limit. Time bacha ker koon sa doosra bara kaam kerna hai ?

Translate - It is rightly said that Ismat Chaghatai's artistic stature is increasing with the passage of time. Rekhta's KZbin channel is a great blessing for the lazy students of literature like us who do not study any literature or literary personality to hear the beauty and ugliness of any writer's skill from a literary expert. Then hearing from a masterful and magical storyteller like Javed Akhtar is a heavenly experience.

taking from ismat aapa's way of writing... why on earth is javed akhtar always indulging in self pity and apologising for being a muslim in india. you ought to pull out of that mind set OR pull out of India and breathe some fresh air to realise what freedom is.

humayun zubairi The Muslims have lived in India for a thousand years. There were tyrannical Islamic rulers in the whole of central and south Asia. But the people of India are people of India equally. It's been a long time. 1 Hindu = 1 Muslim. I am a Hindu. I don't even mind the descendents of Mughals or Ghaznavis or Nizams of Hyderabad or even Nadershah living in India. I don't even mind those patronizing the Islamic Rulers. Indians were okay with all that for a long time. Urdu originated in India. The problem is we don't like Pakistan. They did not have any right to partition the country. They begged for it. And now they are harbouring terrorism. Hence, things are getting diluted. Hence, some stupid Hindutva guys are reigning over us. I don't think Javed Akhtar is self conscious of being a Muslim. We love him. He is a treasure of India.

humayun zubairi Sorry I just went talking there. I love Ismat Chugtai's work. They are now writing the Urdu books in Hindi script. I read them. love them.

every muslim in india is conscious. the higher on ladder of success the more insecure one gets. living in india as a muslim is not same as it is for hindus. Hindutva govt is just an excuse. I agree india should not have been divided but who can we blame? as for Javed sab he is a street smart guy who carved his niche in bollywood on the basis of Urdu language. I don't genuinely consider him to be an artist. he picked up the knack of song writing at a time when the real competition was over. no doubt he understands bollywood market and the psyche of indian public. in other words he knows which side his toast is buttered.

iodides Do we agree on that it is easier for Muslims to live in India than Hindus to live in the interiors of Pakistan or Iran or Turkey or Saudi Arabia? And, do we agree that in developing countries the divides of religion and between rich and poor people are greater than in developed countries? Do we agree that history carries weight- people don't forget what happened in times gone by? A Muslim must understand all of these well. So, if you are living in an age of nation-states, and not caliphites or dynasties and if we want to move forward and not indulge in the politics of feuding over religion you need to be patient. And, that is what Javed Akhtar is doing. I agree with you that he is more of movies than of literature. I have read his poetry... there are others that work better for me.

hindus in any other country (including pakistan) do not have the same problem as muslims. if they did they would convert to islam. so your argument is speculative as i doubt if you have witnessed this personally. If your reasoning is to be accepted then dividing india becomes more logical. What happened in times gone by? Muslims killed and plundered India? sure they did and so did the Brits. The west has threat with muslims and not with hindus and vice versa. its a long debate surely not something to continue on this medium.
