President Javier Milei has proudly announced in a televised address Argentina's first quarterly fiscal surplus since 2008.
The surplus, exceeding 275 billion pesos in March, marks a significant achievement for the libertarian leader's "shock therapy" approach in battling the country's triple digit inflation.
The surplus represents 0.2 per cent of the nation's GDP for the quarter.
"We're going to give everything to pull this country out of the hell we inherited," Milei said during an address on Monday.
Milei warned of the tough economic challenges ahead for the Argentine people.
"To us, inflation is a robbery and the fiscal deficit is the cause of inflation. Therefore, the zero deficit is not only a marketing slogan to this government but an order," he said.
"Therefore, don’t expect any public spending."
He also praised their resilience as the government aims to achieve a zero deficit.
"There isn’t any other alternative than surrendering to the feet of a people who decided to abandon slavery and take a long way through the desert to the promised land."

Here’s something: the USA sends billions of dollars to Ukraine so they can buy old weapons from us. Why not just give them the weapons? Because then the money wouldn’t go to the military-industrial complex. Ukraine is a way of feeding taxpayer funds to military contractors without it being direct. And you can bet the Congress swamp creatures get a stake in the contractors, and therefore profit from war.

@@user-ze3sg6ix1u they’re not terrible decisions. It’s corruption via money laundering. The politicians have stakes in all the industries they pump full of money. Their favorite way of laundering is sending the money first to partners overseas as “aid”, under the condition that the money comes back to the American corporations the politicians have stakes in. That’s why they send money to Ukraine so they can buy our old weapons instead of just directly sending them the old weapons. The money comes right back to the military-industrial complex.

@@anthonymorris5084 a balanced budget is not always the intention though. If governments wish to grow the economy then they should spend more than they gain in tax in a "budget deficit", but if they wish to control inflation then they would have a "budget surplus" and spend less than they gain in tax. Milei is cutting spending so they can control their major debts gained under Peronism which is a rational decision.

@@CaptainCobbler Governments do not "grow" the economy. The private sector does. Governments can only lay the foundation conducive for the private sector to succeed and grow the economy. @@CaptainCobbler I am a firm believer in free market economics. The evidence is overwhelming. I openly admit that capitalism has flaws. 200 years ago it was laced with flaws. We have been working toward improving it ever since. Mostly from Left wing demands like paid holidays, weekends off, a 40 hour week, minimum wage, health and safety and other worker protections and on and on. While our goal should be to create equality of opportunity and lift people out of poverty I see no moral imperative to make everybody economically equal. I have never begrudged the people who have more than me or are more successful than me. I celebrate success and try to emulate them. Profits are nothing but positive. I have worked in retail with low pay, and in a union shop as a laborer. I've been entrepreneurial as well, making investing a huge part of my life. Capitalism requires a set of rules and these rules need to be consistent. Investors like stability. Constant government intervention in the market creates problems. Governments should be small and not run our lives. I believe in freedom, liberty and accountability. I am fully aware of the need for government social programs, but I'm also fully aware that governments are horribly inefficient and wasteful. Cheers.

I am amazed how quickly the situation is turning. I wished Argentina and Argentinians well, with their new President. And this was not cynical. I didn’t think the people had the stomach for a shock therapy. But to hear that this short term trend could be lasting is good. If and that is a big if, Milei is returning the surplus to the people - then I really under estimated his politics. If he pays back (aka refunds the lowest tax bracket - he gives money in the hand of the masses. Two or three things will happen. The money will be spend and is growing the economy, the rate of money will accelerate (the economy will grow) private investment will take note and …. The economy will grow. So what I see Milei will get a triple return. So the questions are, when will the money being returned? Immediately or later aka in three months? How will the money being returned? Electronic transfers to bank accounts? Checks? As silly as this sounds retuning the money costs money. My biggest hope for the people is that the domestic economy will kick start. I know Milei is not a fan of government but he has to think for once how he will provide guarantees for micro loans which could be the third way how he repays the people, and actually creates another multiplication factor to grow this surplus and grow it via privat loans guaranteed by the people for the people and create exactly the free enterprise Melei needs for the Argentinian miracle. Good luck 🍀 to the people of Argentina.

Why are people celebrating? Any government can cut their spending and will automatically have a surplus. The real challenge is what comes next when industries compensate by increasing their prices to cover the missing subsidies or when they start cutting employment raising the poverty rate even further with the potential of causing mass social unrest. Let's hope they don't go full totalitarian if the ones in poverty decides to start an uprising.

Kinda ok on what you say about the consequences of cut the subsidies and the prices are going up as well is a reality already here on Argentina but guess what is happening, people is supporting even more Milei's government policies, an uprising is very far away of Argentinians people, there are even people opposite that try to start the protest and make him fall, but even like this people don't follow them, everyone is having patience to see the inflation go down as soon as next month, and are making all the effort to resist till prices start go down, people is saying that can even wait 2 years to see results. About the real challenge, that will be contrarrested by economy grown, this is not happening right now not because Milei management but because the laws that point to remove the ties of production businesses are still not approved on Milei's reforms that must be approved by Congress yet. When reforms start lots of investments are waiting to boost the economy, but the law need to be approved so the business have the institution backup solid

If milei need more power people will give it.. right now support of people directly is around 56% and if count indirectly goes up to 70% or more.. if Milei's can make the inflation go down will become politically untouchable, and people is already thinking on Milei's second period for sure

"Aid to community kitchens", how can it aid the community if it activley made them poorer. These kitchens had to be paid for by taxes. Meaning in stead of creating business and jobs by using their money wisely, the people were paying the government in higher taxes. These so-called charities actively were making it harder for the poor to improve their lot by reducing the availability of venture capital in the market. Thus putting a stranglehold on the entire economy. Secondly, why is the government financing kitchens? Can the community and the church not organise it on their own? If you feel these charities are so important, why do you not start your own.

Tell the truth. He’s asking to audit the books. The UBA are screaming that they don’t want to be transparent with their budget spending and show the public where the funds are going. Milei hasn’t cut education. The govt want to audit the universities as they do here in Australia and any NORMAL non corrupt society. It’s embarrassing that left wing argentines don’t know the difference . And let me tell you something about the soup kitchens, 50% didn’t exist. The money was lining the pockets of corrupt politicians and corrupt NGOs!!! This is why the country wants to eat the left alive. Because they’ve used the poor, they’ve used the hard issues to act empathetic, steal everything, buy mansions in gated communities and let 60% of the population fall below the poverty line. As a former center left voter, I find it criminal and sickening.
