This can be explain a lot by parental attachment styles. When youre young and you have a shitty relationship/bond with your parent, your brain actually repurposes those parental attachment neural pathways for adult relationships. So you cant help but gravitate towards shitty people and relationships. If youre introspective and self aware, you can absolutely break out of it, but like changing a "habit" youve done for 20 years, it takes a lot of work.
