I first saw Jaws on it's release back in '76 and I loved it. I'd seen it at the cinema loads of times, then a few times on TV showings, then VHS. Skip forward a bit, I introduced my daughter to it. She grew up loving it and through her childhood, teens and older years, it was a film we'd enjoy watching together. Several years ago, it was re-released in the UK as 'The Original Summer Blockbuster." My daughter took ME to the cinema to see it again; a treat for just the two of us to enjoy it together on the big screen. Back in the '70's, little 12 year old me never imagined that one day, I'd be seeing it at the cinema again with my grown-up daughter - first time for her and although she knew the film backwards by then, she was still amazed at the size of the shark on the cinema screen. Happy days! HOLLYWOOD: It DOESN'T need a remake. It wouldn't work anyway; it did in the '70's; but not with the knowledge we all have about sharks now - great whites do not behave in that way. Just leave it alone as the classic it is - a film of it's time that worked then ... and for fuck sakes, don't let Di$ney get their hands on it!

I can agree for this film to be considered the greatest of its genre, having been the one to create the infamous "summer blockbuster" tradition from then on. However, as an animator, I also classify the 2004 Spongebob Squarepants movie to be the best of its genre because it has the same vital components as Jaws: perfect casting, perfect pacing, perfect score, and it stayed true to the core audience who supported the original series (of which me and my dad are a part of). @Mc.Garnagle2 жыл бұрын
Both are simply masterful. Although I feel the Quint strapping in scene gets overshadowed which is too bad. In a film that carries itself so perfectly, with just one great decision after another, it ranks as one of the very best. Quint has developed a sixth sense when it comes to his line of work. When the reel starts to click, Shaw is able to convey (without a word spoken) that his spidey sense is tingling. He's not entirely sure what he has, but something is up . I love how Brody and Hooper are completely oblivious as Quint quietly and methodically starts preparing for battle. The whole damn thing is just too perfect lol.

I think part of what makes Jaws hold up and still work is that they actually built a giant shark and shot it in the real ocean. The two other movies that you mentioned, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Moby Dick" were shot on stages and used miniatures. Part of what yanks out the realism is that they are shot in fake environments to begin with.

Jaws is and has always been my favorite film. It's what inspired me to start making films and eventually go to film school to make it a career. Not only do I love the story of the film, and even more so the story of how the film was made, I love the feeling of reality in a film that is technically so unrealistic. There are no unusual colors or sets, there is no beautification of the characters, in fact most of them look like real people and not Hollywood icons, partially because many of the secondary characters WERE real people from Martha's Vineyard. I love that everything is so grounded in reality and I think that is why the shark, and the story around it, work so well. And as a side note, the work Joe Alves did to make the Warlock into the Orca is breathtaking to me. I still hope someday I can build a fully functioning replica of that boat for my own use because it is so beautiful to me.

Great insight into the relationship of the three main characters. My wife refuses to see this movie even though I tell her that the movie is far more than a horror movie. The movie draws it's strength from the portrait of the people involved. And like a lot of great pieces of art, it is oddly relevant today.

A sculpture for the mechanical shark from Jaws used to be at Universal Studios Hollywood after the release of the film. It's now going to be at a Hollywood motion picture museum which was originally supposed to open in 2019 but moved to 2020. Special Effects artist Greg Nicotero and his team from KNB EFX Group helped rebuild the shark to the way it looked from day 1 of filming Jaws.

The shark looks amazing in the pond scene. I believe the reason for this is that it was shot at the end of the schedule and was somewhat weathered and worn which works in its favor. They also had it swimming under the surface and those shots look great. While the shot of the shark in the chum scene is great I always thought it looks "Too clean" like they spent too much time polishing it up for its big entrance. The dirtier the shark is the better it looks.

The only shark film where the shark(s) even came close to the shark in Jaws, is Deep Blue Sea. And that’s because they used animatronic sharks for a lot of the scenes.

Yeah, of course it does. Dreyfuss, and some other people say that the shark needs a CGI replacement because by today's standards, the mechanical shark looks bad and fake. I honestly have no problem with the shark. It just "FEELS" like a shark. It is used sparingly but what was put on screen is memorable. It is just enough for us to know it is there. Spielberg succeeded in making the shark the mysterious iconic antagonist.

Peter Benchley's got some nerve talking about "believability" when the climax of his novel features the shark dying *right as it is about to devour the last remaining character* It's been wreaking utter havoc for days on end, chomping people left, right and center, destroying Quint's boat... and then it is 3 seconds away from eating the film's hero when it suddenly gets *plum tuckered out* and just dies. Spielberg was right to do away with that ending. It would have elicited groans and cries of "what the fuck" from viewers.
@lyndoncmp57514 жыл бұрын
It didn't just suddenly die. It just finally succumbed to exhaustion from dragging around the barrels and harpoon wounds. It expended its final energy when it sank the boat.
@godisbollocks4 жыл бұрын
@@lyndoncmp5751 Yeah, I get that. But having it die in that *instant* before it's about to eat the hero is dreadfully corny writing.

@@godisbollocks Well yeah I can't argue with that. A big let down for sure but I suppose it would have been even worse had the shark just died before sinking the Orca and dragging Quint to his death so at least there was that hehe. Peace.

Best Jaws retrospective on KZbin, thank you. I liked Hooper best as a kid but find that I relate more to Brody as an adult. As much as anything else I feel like the film is a story about how a man overcomes his fear and grows in the end as he no longer hates the water.
