The Blu ray was bad with the bleeding of the 3D overlapping on the 2D & it was more noticeable when I started watching it on a 4K television with DV. on a HDTV not so much. Jeff from Films at Home had said there hasn't been any good releases of this movie anyways. He went has far as VHS up to the 4K release. He did say, like you did, its the best it has looked over the Blu ray even though he pointed out the same things you did

It's embarrassing, 4k should be archive quality. Half the movie is not the real movie, it's a computers dream of what jaws 3 looks like, every frame is ran thru a robots distorted view of reality.

It was initially filmed with 3D cameras and it was always wonky looking anyway unless you saw it in theaters with the effect the way it was intended.

Jaws 3 is the only one in the franchise I've actually seen in the theater. In 3-d even, back when it came out. Can't say I'd ever want to see it again, and certainly wouldn't spend $30 on it personally. But I'm still glad people are making noise about the AI mess. Hopefully that will prevent it from happening on future releases.

Best Quaid/LGJR movie is _Enemy Mine_ . Loved watching that whenever it was on as a kid. I saw it really young (like 5) with my dad one night when I couldn't sleep (I'd usually sneak into the living room if I couldn't sleep and he'd be awake watching either movies or TNG) and that movie really stayed with me.

The bluray "out of focus" look may be because of the upper/lower split frame filming for the 3d...the center would be more hard focus because of that to enhance the 3d viewing...they may have also tried to DNR that out in this version.. I truly think they restored this and then used AI upscaling to try to get more background detail and shaprness and they didn't need to...it really is such a short amount of fleeting moments in the background that I don't understand people getting upset about it...who in the world is pausing and zooming in on single frames of the background lol But It was very divisive on the video I did on it too, so good luck 😂

I've watched Jaws 3 in 3D both at home and in theaters, but I've retired my 3D TV, so I may pick up the 4K version. Also, if Universal wanted to do something with their Jaws property, and not piss too many people off with a remake of the original, they should just remake Jaws 3, mainly for its setting.

The four James Cameron 4k's The Abyss, Aliens, Titanic, and True Lies, all had various levels of AI tinkering from Peter Jackson's Park Road Post. Aliens and True Lies look the worst because they didn't even get 4k scans of the negatives, unlike Titanic and The Abyss. Aliens and True Lies were 2k upconverts.

Too the ones saying, that it's not visible in motion: When you watch it on a big screen (mine is projected in 120 inches), those morphing background faces, IS actually noticeable. Even in mid close ups, things looks uncanny at times.

They are just cheaping out like most studios are and trying to maximize their 4K transfers for little to no work. Probably will see this on most 4Ks that aren’t as popular so studios can make even more money

I have the 3D + 2D Jaws 3 bluray. It looked really good in 3D, but now I'll have to watch the 2D to see if that's ok. You're watching that 4k on a 65" screen. For people watching on a home theatre projector at 150" those faces would be much more noticeable... and terrifying!

U still need a human to check over fix work done by AI. Obviously it to cut costs, so why they charging such high prices for a AI wet dream release. I saw pictures of people in the crowd that have deformed eyes and faces😮. Purchasing this release would be sending a message to studios that this standard is acceptable.

The old Blu Ray 3-D version from about ten years back is the original release with no alterations, and “Jaws 3-D” is from the era when basically 100% of the scenes were photographed in real stereoscopic, with the two-camera system. There was no simulated digital 3-D as we see today in the 2020s, applied to old movies to make “Wizard of Oz” 3-D, for example (which is really pretty cool).

There were "2" recent 4k UHD releases of Jaws 3 The Revenge. If you like the movie ...you need to purchase the 4k UHD "LIMITED EDITION STEEL Book" release which has a "MASSIVE" video improvement in comparison to the standard 4k UHD that was released. This can be seen on the "In Search of Physical Media" KZbin Channel.

Ha ha ha! I saw “Jaws 3-D” in the theatres back in the day - and bought a copy of it on Blu Ray because it’s fun. Beautiful looking, excellent exploitation trash with magic giant rubber sharks, an underwater tunnel city with a haunted octopus shipwreck to scare us, horror and gore, funny characters and many laughs! Lots of fun.

What is the big deal? It’s just the background of a few scenes. If you are the lucky ones (lol) to watch the regular movie you can’t even see the background, so it’s probably all they could come up with. If they left it blurry people would cry and complain. The original movie being shot in 3D perhaps lead to the bluray being horrible? Of course, others like Friday the 13th 3D probably did NOT have this problem (I'm guessing) so everything was likely just a halfassed job and they kept the tradition with this new 4K release, in a different way, lol.

I think this 4k transfer is fantastic. After 40 years, this FINALLY this looks like a real movie. Some scenes they'll never be able to fix, but what can ya do. I sit about 10 feet from the TV so I could care less about the background faces. My only complaint is the underwater scenes in the third act are VERY dark...I could barely see what was happening. Aside from that, I'm very happy with this version.

This is the Jaws that should have been released first on 4K, the first two were good, but combines the elements of the first two movies and synergistically it really brings Jaws 3D home as a masterpiece. Finally, been waiting so long for this 4K release.

I heard about the AI and saw the zoomed in images but assumed it would be unnoticeable in normal viewing, but that crowd scene makes every face stand out so starkly and unnaturally that it's impossible not to notice how horrifying the crowd looks. Though to be honest it's kind of making me want this release..

Jaws3(D)was set up to be the Jurassic Park of the Jaws series. I was excited to see it when it was theatrically released. If the "meh" of the entire movie was saved by a spectacular ending, this would be more than a guilty pleasure. Instead, they fumbled the climax and leaves it in the second-to-last position next to the incredibly sluggish and incredible, Jaws the Revenge. Still, Jaws 3 has allowed Jaws 2 to be viewed as a good sequel; something it is not (IMHO).

People need to stop supporting this kinda stuff seriously. I know as physical media collectors, we have fomo, and the fear of omg if i dont buy this physical media will die tomorrow. Calm down, do research, and have some restraint. I know it can be hard, and it's disappointing, but how studios learn is by profit. Ai just isn't there yet, and it comes off cheap and lazy, and i know people will say it's better than blu-ray or its not that bad or it's just in a couple scenes but its the principal and this shouldn't happen and this shouldn't be acceptable to us physical media collectors.

We need to say an unwavering "NO" to any kind of use of AI "enhancing" or Upscaling of films for 4k UHD Blu-ray release. We should absolutely NOT be supporting these products, no matter what. Studios need to know that it is just not an option. And in the end when everyone has had enough of it and stops buying horrendous 4k AI transfers then the studios themselves will be to blame for the end of Physical Media, and the people that bought the AI discs, encouraging the studios to use the software, will also be to blame. Lets not destroy our own thing guys, and lets not let it be destroyed by others or the studios either.

It seems 3D movies don’t translate well to 4K. Wasn’t the 3D version of T2 also used for the 4K upscaling? Seems like the problem is upscaling 3D films & not the actual upscaling process to 4K. Just my opinion

Interesting review. As a completionist i was on the fence about this one but i think you've swayed me to go get and give it a try. I do have the Blu ray but hadnt seen it for years and aftet your review i had a quick look and yes you're correct, it's quite appalling quality. Rubbish. That also make it easier to give the 4k a try despite the obvious but fortunately infrequent flaws. Plus as you say this new approach they tried does make this disc somewhat of a curio which also appeals to my film history and physical media history sensibilities! 😁

I watched this 4k before the talk about the AI so I never picked up on any of the messy background AI when I watched it but I still say otherwise this is the best jaws 3 has looked apart from the background mess. The outdoor scenes look great and the 3D looks bad but will never look good still happy with this steelbook pickup. It’s a shame it’s not better but it is what it is and will rewatch it well.

Ai faces will improve in the future. I'll just wait to see if Universal ever bring out another 4K version. There is a fix that would work now, and that would be to upscale the films to about 12K first then down scale them. Ai can do faces OK with enough pixels, so you would have to go to 12K first then 4K.

I will agree with you and others, it comes down to the source. I think regardless of it being AI upscaled or traditional 4K scan, it would have looked bad in the background due to the 3D. So we all would have bitched about it anyways. If they do not have a good 2D negative, I doubt it will ever get redone. I'm sure they wanted to do it to please collectors whole want the entire franchise on 4K.

Problem is if people keep buying these releases to see whether they look bad or not with AI processing then the studios won’t care because they are still selling copies and making profit, if nobody buys it then they may start listening to the criticisms and issues that people have with them and maybe then they will start doing normal 4K transfers.

Uh... I mean I guess. I am aware of the ai upscale limitations. You can use Topaz Labs Video Enhance AI. You would the same thing if your not careful. True lies was more controversial. The revelations of how that movie was shot. Was definitely eye opening.The issue with Aliens were minor. Unless the grief of the aesthetics of the color grading is a issue for aliens.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think Jaws 3 is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm a little older than most here so I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out as I was excited because it was in 3-D. To me it was just dreadful, the acting, the 3-D effects were just terrible. I remember the audience I had seen it with was actually laughing at certain scenes. Most notably the one scene where the shark is heading for the glass where Lou Gossett and others were, it was so bad, the shark looked like it was floating in air. I'm not surprised there are no special features as I'm sure most people who were associated with the movie want nothing to do with it now.
