Not knowing the specific history of LaGrange, KY, I can't say for sure, but probably when the railroad came to town in the 1800's, it was considered a great thing that it ran through the middle of town. The station was probably on the main street, and people could walk to get the train or take a short buggy ride to it. Merchants could get goods delivered close to their stores. Up until automobiles came along, a railroad running down the street was most likely considered a real plus. I used to work for CSX as train crew. Events like this are just about always coordinated with the railroad by local officials, and there are special instructions on the event in the orders for every train crew scheduled to operate through that community during the time of the event. Often a railroad official is assigned to be on-site coordinating with the local authorities, keeping them apprised of approaching trains, and controlling by radio orders when and how fast trains move through the area. Someone below said that trains usually don't whistle coming through town. This city probably has a "quiet zone" agreement with the railroad to only ring the bell when passing through town, but that practice was probably suspended for the festival. Stuff like this doesn't just happen. It's planned well in advance. Safety first, last, and always.

Most towns had enough sense not to build their Main Streets over the tracks and then line them close up with their shops. They either built on one side of the tracks or allowed a very, very wide buffer zone between the tracks and the streets that run parallel. The stations would be built within the right of way. My suburban town, which began in the 1800's when the railroad was built, is like that. Very busy with freight and commuter traffic, but you don't have to worry about your car running up nose-to-nose with a 200 ton loco.
@pinkiepyro59643 жыл бұрын
@@KameraShy the first cars werent invented until the early 1900s. It makes sense that a train would run through a small town by that time. (Station on the outskirts, and then expanded around) There wasnt a major push in america for everyone to drive until the 50s, so it wasnt an issue until then. It was likely too late by then to reasonably relocate the rails as car travel was eating into the railroad profits. Most towns these days that have railroads running through them had the lines built in the 1900s. but a few older routes remained profitable to keep, resulting in main streets developing like la grange

@dickhelling35295 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhuxley6337 I bet even in Lagrange there is a greater risk of pedestrian injuries caused by cars and trucks than by trains. We're irrational about that in the UK; we consider it perfectly OK for cars and trucks to go through our streets at 30mph all day long, but a train at 10mph a dozen times a day would be unacceptable. Which is a major part of the reason why there are very few freight trains in the UK.....
@filanfyretracker5 жыл бұрын
I suspect the UK has very little grade level train and roadway interaction, This is actually a huge problem in the USA and a major barrier to high speed rail in the Northeastern USA. Grade level crossings are a major hazard(to idiots), But they are also why aside from a lot of sharp turns that the Acela Express for example cannot tear across Connecticut at 150mph. Passengers and operators could get injured if a train hit a signal ignoring semi at top speed.
@woodalexander5 жыл бұрын
@@filanfyretracker It's actually track curvature. There are ZERO grade crossing timetable south of New Haven and only a couple between New Haven and Providence. The intermediate locomotive is known as a DPU and is there to add extra pulling power to the train to make it easier to keep long trains moving. Dangerous business to stand that close to a freight train. Sometimes strapping on the cars comes undone and can fly out and hit anything that's too close, as the train passes. On top of that a train with a lot of force can create low pressure as it passes and if someone is standing dangerously close they can be pulled toward the train.

The trains really do make the town. I first saw it in a train magazine about twenty years ago

Maybe this is a rookie question, but how do the engineers get alerted/notified the end of the train has cleared the town? My only guess is some sort of sensor in the track signals there are no cars passing any longer. LaGrange KY is on my bucket list to visit.

It was a busy day for trains.

This give me crazy anxiety watching but I’m sooo fascinated. Here in the UK, we have level crossings everywhere cos of health and safety but this is through the street!!! The Street!

I look for cities like this to film trains in the street. I have a playlist called Street Running Trains. If you have time check out a few more of them.

Boy, I wish I could have been there for that. That was one heck of a train, just not sure how safe it was to be bombing down the street at that speed with so many people just a few feet away.

I filmed all the trains that day in the light except for a couple. I will be posting those videos when I get them complete. An ambulance got to, I mean had to wait for a train also

I suspect that people who live in LaGrange have had a little experience with trains running down Main Street, and most understand about staying out from under them. Just a guess on my part.

That was a very long train with DPU in the middle, enjoyed it going past!. :D Please could you ring up CSX and ask that they put some festive lighting on their trains for the Christmas period? Especially if they're going through the main street when parades or festivities are on! Merry Christmas Jaw Tooth! :D

Not to be mean but I loved it when the Polar Express came through, trains are an integral part of the holiday and I didn't hear one person complain
