3 Trains Passing In Carlisle, Ohio. Train Speeds Checked By Radar Gun! CSX Freight Train Waits In Siding For 2 Trains To Pass. Huge auto racks train with DPU. Radar shows train increasing speed after crossing railroad crossing and passing 2 mile long train waiting on siding. Look how big these articulated auto racks cars are! They look like sky scrapers on wheels. By popular demand once again I have brought the radar gizmo back. It shows one of the trains increasing speed after it gets past the switch where the single main line goes to 2 tracks. I rode here with @1960gambit on our way to Troy, Ohio. Don't miss those videos.
Filmed in 1080p with 60fps and 2.5GB on September 14 , 2022

Suggestions your radar gun is malfunctioning are all wrong. You showed a picture and I'm pretty sure it's a Bushnell. Those things are accurate. The problem is, trains are so enormous they can be traveling along, looking like they're going really fast, while only actually doing 35 mph. It's all in the perspective.

Ah yes, another Carlisle video! I remember when I went to school there, sometimes they had to delay school because a bus or two had to wait for trains to pass. In the area you filmed, there used to be several cabooses staged next to the tracks on the North side. I helped a good friend of mine work on one of those cabooses one summer prepping it to be restored. Sadly they’re all gone now.

Best way to use radar is reduce the angle of the beam, in this video, you are as good as you can get and of course you can't stand next to the track as the train is going by. Lots of things can affect the accuracy, cyclone fences, trees, etc. it's also preferred to hold it steady for at least a few seconds to give the radar time to calculate the speed. Good Job sir, enjoy your videos very much, Thank you.

That last train had 3 old engines behind the Tier 4 3450: two GP40-2's and an SD40-2, but they didn't seem to be running, no smoke or noise. Those big auto racks have the reporting mark AOK, which is the Arkansas-Oklahoma Railroad but is also used by Greenbrier Management Services. Some of those are marked AOKX but not all. The AOK does have some of their own cars, but not those.

JT, a good test for part of the accuracy of your radar gun would be to get as close to the track as you are comfortable with. Just before the last car in the train passes you shoot at an angle like you usually do. Then after the last car goes past you shoot the rear end of that car. Then compare those two readings. A good friend of mine is a retired State Trooper. He told me they have to shoot the vehicles either on the front or the rear of the vehicle. Shooting the side is not as accurate and would not hold up in court. He also said shooting the side at an angle generally gives a slower speed than the vehicle is actually traveling.
@spaceistheplace6013
@spaceistheplace6013 Жыл бұрын
There are videos of people radar gunning the front of trains and then continuing to gun the side with this same gun. Even at well over 100 MPH on Amtrack trains the difference is small. What a lawyer can get a ticket thrown out over doesn't necessarily equate to physics. If you look at one set of wheels and picture a car driving by on a road it helps to adjust your perspective. Hope this helps
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 Жыл бұрын
@@spaceistheplace6013 I’m not understanding your next to last sentence. Part of my job as an engineer was to count the cars on passing trains while we inspected the passing train. I have seen JT shoot the sides of cars and get a reading in the low 40s when I know the train is traveling in the low 50s. And I have heard him say several times he believed the train was moving faster than the gun was showing.
@chriswilson7044
@chriswilson7044 Жыл бұрын
There is a simple answer here. The displayed speed will be slower than the actual speed if the radar beam does not hit the object dead on. The display is reduced by the cosine of the angle of impact , so at 45 degrees you see .707 of the actual speed. Lots of us have posted this but jt isn't listening. He obviously can not stand on the track but I have seen him aim the gun at about a sixty degree angle and wonder why the reading is so off what it appears the train is doing. The best bet would to be to get as close as is safe as the train passes, and sim at the back of the last car.
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 Жыл бұрын
@@chriswilson7044 Once the train passes he can stand in the middle of the track and shoot the back of the rear car. If its a flat car then he may need to shoot the car ahead of it if he can’t get it on the flat car, because that is a small target.

My question is with all the auto-racks we see in your videos, the car lots are empty of new cars. Are they just carrying sailboat fuel?

Many of the autoracks serve a huge Ford plant outside Louisville. So southbound they are likely to be empty

ChainsawN&W1218, speed looks about right, I would have liked to have had a radar gun yesterday in Abbington VA on NS Bristol line/Crescent Corridor, speed through there is 60 mph booking, filmed an IM train with end train DPU from the pedestrian Bridge that goes over tracks,nothing like getting blasted by diesel exhaust 👍🛤!

Trains and big trucks look like they're going faster, mainly because they are bigger and it looks that way. But in reality most are going the same speed as the cars around them.
