I had a friend who was a retired engineer on Southern Pacific. He said that suicides by train still haunted him. There's nothing the train crew can do to prevent it and they see the look on the person's face as they realize just what they're doing. Chester passed away a few years ago. He was a good man.

Some drivers are so traumatised they give up train driving; other do continue with a few totally unfazed. Here in the UK drivers now have to undergo mandatory counselling. The trauma does not end with train crews but staff who have to attend, thence those notifying families. In my four decades as a railwayman career I've sadly witnessed this from the cab, attended incidents and investigated many more. The hardest part was always talking to drivers and the bereaved.
@johnlynch52212 жыл бұрын
It's a cruel and selfish thing to leave this life that way. I doubt they ever think of the cab crew who was affected by this.

Great video. I used to live along the ILLINOIS CENTRAL GULF line in Monee Illinois. I loved to see the trains go by. The cool part is that the line is below grade because of the hill that Monee Illinois is on. The old steamers had trouble to climb the hill so they made " The Cut" it was awesome to stand over the tracks when the train went by. I miss living there.

Very cool! I would love to be on Main Street in Monee right over the tracks and film a train going under me. Impacts with trains are usually fatal and ultimately are distressing for all concerned (I've attended more than my fair share). The tragedy is that so many are usually avoidable. Still, loved the video and a nice change to see passenger trains being filmed. Well done - Again! 🙂
@billmorris26132 жыл бұрын
I tend to disagree with you that impacts with trains are usually fatal. I have had over 20 train / vehicle accidents and only 2 were fatal. In the early days of Operation Lifesaver our RR used train crews to do the presentations. I was in the first group of volunteers from my division. And gave presentations for several years. We had access to all the latest stats for Louisiana. If I remember correctly only 8 to 15% were fatal.
@Gigie2Z2 жыл бұрын
@@billmorris2613 I disagree with YOU! Trains going to and from San Diego to LA have had many pedestrians hit. They have all been fatal. However, trucks and vehicles involved are not usually fatal unless it’s a direct hit on the driver broadside.
@billmorris26132 жыл бұрын
@@Gigie2Z I did not know you were talking about just hitting a person. I can see where most of them would be fatal. In my almost 50 years in RR operations I only know of 3 incidents where a train hit a person on our division. Neither of them were me. My comment clearly states train / vehicle incidents.

I've been watching your videos on and off for a while. I only started watching nearly every day, with the KZbin app on the Roku recommends your channel. Anyway, you mentioned about seeing some short trains. It's not you noticing it. The Wise World of Trains channel has been commenting about that a lot lately. He's mainly referring to trains going from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York state, and even Pennsylvania to Chicago and back. A few of those trains he sees run through my area of NW Indiana primarily run on the Norfolk Southern lines that go through South Bend and Elkhart into Chesterton, Portage, Gary, East Chicago, Hammond, before going to Chicago. As for the Amtrak Cardinal service, that runs through NW Indiana. From Chicago, it runs along the Canadian National line to Munster Indiana, then along the CSX line (former Monon line) to make a stop in Dyer, then makes another stop in Rensselaer. Not sure if there's a stop between Rensselaer and Lafayette, but I know there's a stop in Lafayette Indiana, and a few stops before going to Indianapolis. If you ever decide to visit NW Indiana, there's a few places to see trains. In Griffith Indiana, there's the Broad Street crossing, where Canadian National owns both lines. There used to be 5 sets of railroad lines running through Griffith Indiana until 1976. Since 1981, it's been 2 sets (CN, and EJ&E, until CN bought EJ&E). Since CN now owns the former EJ&E line, few trains are sent to Chicago, as they rerouted most of their trains around Chicago, before going into Wisconsin. Most trains that have cars switched around to other trains, most of that is now done at the Kirkland Yard at the US Steel Works in Gary Indiana. There's also the Gibson Yard in Hammond Indiana to watch some trains. CSX and Norfolk Southern use that Yard, though CSX uses it more. It's run by the Indiana Harbor Railroad. Chesterton Indiana around downtown (especially west of the main downtown area) has a lot of trains running through, mostly Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific via trackage rights, but an occasional CSX runs through on the NS line.

The train vs pedestrian happened at Burns and Parkway in Hartwell. There's a long open section of track after the crossing across from Glendale street. I carried mail in that area for 9 years and every 2 years there was person killed on average. I knew a couple of them, one was a customer of mine that lived 5 houses down from the tracks. Him and his fiance were out walking their dogs one day like they normally did and while walking back to their house they crossed the tracks right as a train was coming, He decided to stop for a minute saying his leg was cramping so he lagged behind while his fiance continued to the curb with their dogs. Suddenly, right as the train was about to come he ran onto the tracks and was struck. The impact knocked him off the tracks into the grass and bushes on the other side. The line was closed for 3 hours. His fiance continues to live in that house. His fiance had absolutely no clue or saw no signs that he was suicidal. There was also a man on the side that he was knocked onto that was walking his dog that saw it happen. He called 911. He was shaken up for days afterward. I didn't see him out for about a week. He said he'd never felt so helpless seeing it happen and not being able to do anything to stop it. The other person I knew in the neighborhood was a twin. Him and his brother were homeless for about 5 years due to drugs but he cleaned up and was clean for about 2 years while his brother struggled and was in and out of jail. He had just gotten married and was proud of being sober until he slipped up. He was so disappointed that one night he just walked down the tracks until a train came and he didn't move, just walked right into it. This happened on the other side of the crossing more toward the bridge going over vine street. Suicide is a terrible thing not only to the person that commits it but to the surrounding people that are involved directly or indirectly. RIP Skip and Jerry.....
