11 years is not too old for a cat. I have had a lot of cats and most lived for about 16 years. Best wishes.

But 11 years is old, especially for an adventurous outdoor cat. It just means keep an eye out for infections and other ailments. I had a dog live to about 13 or 14 (a little longer than expected), but her last years we had to watch for infections, especially after she went blind.

When my last cat hit 12 the vet said you know he’s healthy for his age but he’s probably only got 3 years left. In defiance of the vet he lived to be 22.

Sadly we had to put our precious kitty down last month (15th August) she had reached 23 years old. She was a tabby and looked just like Jax so this brought tears to my eyes since losing Roger is still fresh and raw. I miss her heaps.

Our cat lived 20 years. She got dementia, and used to poop all over the house. That was OK because it was solid, and we just picked it up with a paper towel. But then at the end, she stopped using her cat box to pee, and the vet said it was time. It will be 2 years at Christmas and we still miss her terribly.

I've been getting that chat from my vet for the past decade. lol My cat just turned 20 years old. She has definitely slowed down now. My cousin had a cat that was 25 when she died many years ago. And another cousin has a living cat that is also 25. You just never know how long. I hope Jax gets back on his paws quickly. ;-)

@@paradiselost1914 I had s Siamese kitty that lived to 23, and was in good health until the cat food supply was poisoned by Chinese suppliers to the U.S. food companies (Meow Mix, Purina, etc), circa 2007. Who would ever have thought that American cat food companies would be buying their ingredients from China, of all places? It destroyed the kidneys of millions of pets.

@@bimmerboard That is horrible. I switched to a very good quality food around 2005 because one of my cats developed crystals. A few years after he recovered from that, we discovered that he was diabetic. We gave him 2 insulin shots per day until his diabetes became completely unmanageable. He lived to be about 15. He was a real trooper.

@@paradiselost1914 I just did a quick search and apparently it is not. Average age is about 15 and not uncommon to live into their 20’s. Oldest known cat was 38. Now that's rare.

My fat cat lived just shy of 16 years so I bet he pulls through ok, infections just hit older cats harder but all the medicine should be enough for his body to fight it off, my gut says he'll pull through!

I've had many cats since the 1990's, and I lost my oldest cat, 23 years old, last Sunday a week ago tomorrow 9-26. He suddenly started losing weight had been on high blood pressure and heart medicine for the last four years but was doing great. His blood work at the vet checked out fine, but cancer cannot be detected in cats with blood work. Being sensitive to a cat's health I noticed the change in Jax in your last 4 videos and was worried about him. I'm glad you took him to the emergency room and he received meds. Most of the cats I've had lived in their teens, the one I lost was 23 years old the oldest I had was 25 years old, Jax is only 11 equivalent to 60 yrs old in human years, he should have many good years ahead of him. I'm concerned about him keep a close eye on him for changes and vet visits if necessary. Best to you and a speedy recovery for Jax.

Our tabby cat is 22. Six years ago the vet said she had cancer, and we got the prescription for antibiotics, pain med and steroids. 2 weeks later they said to put her down, she would only live weeks to a month or so. We decided, based on better behavior and no signs of pain, to decline. We moved to the country instead. She has some episodes, but still purrs,grooms, goes mostly in the litter box, and is SO happy to sleep in her little sun patch. We are Not ready yet, nor is she. She will let is know, or go quietly in the sunshine, surrounded by flowers and love.

Sorry Jax isn't feeling well. My last two kitties lived to 19 years old and 17! The 17 year old got sick at 13, they never figured it out, but she got better and lived another 4 years!!!! Jax needs a kitty water fountain. They both do, really. Cats like the running water. It may also be that the water you have him drinking there smells strange to him.

That’s actually a great observation. Perhaps a filter for their water (and you, too, Eric). We use a Berkey water filter for everything in our RV with our cats, and people. It is super easy to use and produces consistently good water taste.

@@bimmerboard And Berkeys aren't that expensive, really ,when you realize you can get water from a stream or lake you're camping near, run it through there, and it's safe and 100% potable. If I could go and live on the road, a Berkey would be a must-have. Back to the cats, though-the cat fountains keep the water moving and cats just like that, it keeps the water fresher, the fountain helps.

The kitties are adorable. I think that when Jax was not purring, he was telling you that he didn't feel good. I wonder if soft surfaces hurt where the infection is and those tissues are more sensitive because of the infection and soft things put extra pressure on them? My little Wisty digs in her water bowl when it is empty. Jax just wanted to speak to you and tell you his story I think. You are a very good Daddy and his meds will help him. Tara it s such a loving good little sister. Wisty is over 10 too. It's interesting that the littles can get something like Dimentia and Alzheimer's. At least, they will be easier to care for than an adult, I think. He seems to be so much better at the end of the video. Best Wishes Jax and be a good patient for your Daddy and baby sister. @@mollydion8311 Yes! My suspicion was when Tara was loving on the cat nip that Jax didn't want nothing to do with...perhaps Tara had some bits of cat nip scent of that on her then rubbed up on Jax and it gave him a reaction and made him sick and thus infected his eye!!

Our cat was like Jax..he lived to almost 30...had to put him down after he suffered a stroke and couldn't walk. They can live a long time with good care and diet...hope Jax gets all better Eric...wishing you two well

We're all definitely praying for Jax I'm sure he'll be fine. I don't know if this relates but had a very similar experience with my cat and found out that it was the catnip that they were selling at Walmart. The vet told me that they were seeing it more often and recommended I stop giving my cat catnip. My vet believes that they switched vendors or product and there are harmful irritant chemicals in it. I'm probably going to pronounce this wrong but they said the catnip has been found to have glycol Quinault basically a powderized form of antifreeze that's used as a preservative in China. And it's been showing up in cat and dog products particularly that of catnip sold at Walmart. And that for some reason it seems to affect older cats more so than younger cats. Giving the cat a swollen mouth irritated eyes and causing dementia like symptoms also stomach and urinary tract infections.
