Good question at 22:22 I purchased 110 larger specimen maples 3 years ago from an estate of a Garden designer. It has definitely been a long term project how to get these in the ground . The largest puzzle I have ever solved. By year 2 I was looking to add some colorful conifers and some ground covers. The deceased actually left his family with 700 large trees in pots. He got a little carried away with his purchases from the PNW thinking he needed every kind. Good interview.

So funny about the gnomes. I too really don’t like gnomes either but my husband does. So one year he kept buying them for the garden. I didn’t want to diminish his interest in the garden, so i hid them under the hostas and small shrubs. I don’t really have to see them and my 4 grandkids LOVE finding the gnome on the toilet who is looking at his phone or the Sasquawatch.

Good question at 37:50! I love hearing people’s stories. When I purchased maples from an older gentleman (80), I asked him how he got started in his landscape field specializing in water gardens. He said you won’t believe what I did for 30 years. I said what Bob? He cut women’s hair. Then when he wanted to buy a tractor for his property from one of his hair clients, she didn’t take cash but insisted he design a garden for her. At age 50, he gave up his scissors and for the next 30 years, designed and planted gardens. Much insight here on this interview.

Fabulous interview. I especially liked Siddord's advice on introspection, knowing how you want your garden to function. I know I want a meditation garden so I need some privacy and plants to promote tranquility. Nothing fussy. So much to think about.

I appreciate that JBS is firmly in the modernist tradition and does not want to do things like lining up his boxwood. But this begs the question from those of us who "do not know what else to do"- why do not our landscapes look like someone non-boring like Beatrice Farrand did them? I expect that the answer not is that we have boxwood hedges but rather we do not have a brilliant traditional designer.
