Great interview I was wandered the magic behind the Manhattan Trasfer album with Gadd and Breaking Away album with AL Jarreau sound. Steve Gadd is the phenomenon of a studio drummer he was the King 70-80's.

Nobody remembers Carlos Vega which actually played on one tune in that Al Jarreau Time Album, and the song was Love is real.. To me he was the Best out the whole lot. May He Rest In Peace. C.A. :-(

Great interview, thanks!! Look forward to the youtube videos Jay is talking about. Really exciting. Btw, I think the idea about hooking up all the old studio parts and record it like the old days is awsome. A lot of artists would love that because of a) a REAL vintage 70/80s sound and b) promotional stuff.

Jay talks about all his YT and Documentary projects in every interview I’ve seen over last few years but I’ve never seen any of them come to fruition. It would be cool if he could do them, but I’m ok with him just doing these interviews.

I love Jay, but I cringe when keeps quizzing his interviewer with Q’s. I want to hear explanations from Jay. I don’t need to know that the interviewer also knows what Jay knows. Ha. With that said…I love Jay Graydon. What a legendary career.

This is KILLER Ruben! Btw, I LOVE James Gadson! I feel like Roy Ayers grabbed him for "For Real" by Roy Ayers after hearing the "I want you" album. Ed Green in America is like Gadson, known for the 16th notes on the hats. He got a mention in Zorro's "10 Commandments of R&B drumming" and/or give the Drummer some book from the 90's. I love James on For Real by Roy Ayers. I also love the whole Mystic Voyage album with Ricky Lawson on drums. I consider that album the epitome of entry-level smooth jazz funk drumming! I think of Ricky was 17 at the time of the recording and Dennis Davis told me he was giving him lessons and brought him on when he went on tour with Bowie. He made a great point about how to attack the drums to get the maximum volume.

So here's the thing with phase. If you flip the polarity of the top snare mic, you need to flip the phase of the toms, overheads, hihat...and you'll be forcing it to behave like it doesn't in nature. Just because the head moves down doesn't mean you have negative phase, it's what the drum does. Essentially you'll end up with the same thing as if you'd be hearing lying underneath the drumset.

J.G is my favourite producer, musician, sound wiz. I like the interview but with D. Fagen's Nightfly album you are mistaken regarding the drummers. The entire album was produced by use of a drum computer...Wendel II by Roger Nichols. The drumming style of the humans was programmed but they got paid.
@RubenvanRoonDrumChannel
@RubenvanRoonDrumChannel 2 жыл бұрын
True, but not all the tracks! They used it as the first edit machine to perfect the drumtrack… but Maxine with Ed Greene is I think no Wendel… thanks for watching!
