I don’t think Okocha’s problem was playing for a big team, I think it’s more like he did not really impact the game. His shot accuracy was very poor. That is why his prodigy Ronaldiho benched him at PSG because Ronaldiho impacted the game better.

JJ's roots being African didn't do him any favours and also the era in which he played-it was rife with racism (its still is now but no longer enjoys as much universal support as in times past).
