In the 80's when Jay was filling in for Carson on The Tonight Show, I helped write his monologue, he had other writers too...I was told the magic # of jokes he needed was 26 jokes and I actually got 3 jokes ON in the monologue. One had to do with Reagan's age...one had to do with Leona Helmsley and one other I can't recall. It was so long ago that we faxed in our jokes. It was exciting to watch the show hoping to hear one of my jokes! Great times! - Joe Johnson

Jay is a class act and an amazing car and motorcycle collector. In one instance a lady called him and asked if he wanted to buy her late husbands Ferrari 275. Her husband paid $5800 for it and had told her that it was worth $350,000. Jay responded that he could give her the $350,000 for it but that it was worth closer to $4 million. Jay put her in touch with a friend of his with an auction company and told her that if she got over $3.5 million for it she would have to bake him some chocolate chip cookies. The car sold for $3.75 million.

Jay’s obviously a very charismatic, loquacious guy. In a vacuum he’s very likable doing this informal bullshitting, it’s where he thrives. Arguably as skilled at it as anyone alive, certainly the most experienced next to Letterman. That said, Bill is a terrible listener. He’s already dragged Kimmel through the history of “The Tonight Show” on this podcast, and Jimmy (begrudgingly) explained to Bill that there was no doubt w/ anyone in the know, Jay is a ruthless, bad guy. It’s settled. Yet here Bill is doubling and tripling down the same arguments that Jimmy picked apart. Jay is the common denominator where late night hosts get fkd over. Bill is getting old. Literally and figuratively. I’m still here for his content but he’s aggravating me more and more and he’s misspeaking, mispronouncing, repeating things, just doing more and more old guy shit.

That's why I think Jay got the Tonight show after Carson. Jay always seems at ease and relaxed and people like that about him. He did the opening monologue on the Tonight show as if he was doing a comedy gig at a club he was totally at ease even though he's performing for millions of people. I liked Letterman and Conan in the late night time slot and when they went to other networks, but they both seem a bit self conscious that if they don't get the laugh they expect from their jokes it really bothers them.Jay never had that. Jay seemed like he could be spontaneous and come up with jokes off the top of his head where as Letterman and Conan seemed more regimented with their jokes and they dare not stray from telling the jokes exactly how they were planned. It's hard to put into words ,but Jay is a special guy and comedian.

When I lived in Cedar Rapids back in 2008, there was a terrible flood that devastated the city. Several months later I read a small article that said Jay donated a weekend's worth of standup revenue to one of the cities recovery funds. I respect what he did and the fact that he didn't promote his good deed for his own publicity. Good guy.

Jay Leno was, and is, very savvy about his money.....He has stated that all of the big-contract money he made on his show, he put in the bank, and indulges himself with the other, also large, amounts of money he makes doing his stand-up....he is a very smart man, a good person, married for many years to the same woman--even though you just know that there are so many gold-digging younger ladies out there, that would love to be with him!

Probably the best CR show yet. Whatever the most passive yet effective form of martial arts is, Jay used it in verbal form to combat Bill's constant interruptions and actually got some complete stories out. And what stories! Dangerfield's pre-necktie comedy? Wow! THIS interview demonstrates the Power Of The Jay!
