Now I'm homesick for Kansas City again. Jay McShann was a stellar jazz musician.

Plas is one of the greatest tenor players I have ever heard!!! Nobody plays the Blues like Plas. A true master of the horn. I had the honor of taking a few lessons from Plas. Jay McShann!! what is there to say!
@grahamlyons85223 жыл бұрын
You're right. And I'd swap Plas's lower octave for anyone's altissimo any day.

What was he like as a person? Quiet? Loud? Gentle? Laid-back? Introvert?
@puravida1949 Жыл бұрын
Plas was an excellent teacher and very laid back. A total gentleman and fabulous tenor player!

@@puravida1949 Thanks for your answer. I'm not surprised that you say he's a gentleman and laid-back. Somehow it comes out in his playing. Check out Henry Mancini: Walk on the Wild Side. He does a great job, as usual.

I never had the opportunity to watch him playing, live in a theatre. That's the problem of living in Brazil - many of those geniuses will never come down here! But, thanks to you all and youtube, now I can watch him a little bit! Really thanks!

Just great. I was privileged to see (and meet) Jay McShann in the early `90s in London (Pizza on the Park, Hyde Park Corner) - always remember as one of my favourite musical experiences

I saw Jay on the Burghausen(Bavaria)-JazzFestival many years ago. One minute before his gig he peeped around the curtain (only his head was to see) and smiled - there he had already won! That he played a wonderful piano then, goes without saying.

Thank you Plas for all your musical contributions! As a youngster (before I knew your name) I was digging you on some Earl Grant stuff. There was a particular soulful ballad instrumental w/ Grant & I wish I knew the title. Never heard anyone else play it ever!

Plas Johnson plays "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" by Duke Ellington with Jay McShann and Milt Hinton. Plas is noted as the saxophonist on "The Pink Panther Theme". Milt Hinton is noted as the most-recorded jazz musician, ever. Jay McShann is noted as Charlie Parker's first employer. Now, who is that drummer?

This piano stuff is so hard to transcribe. The little nuances and semi-played notes. Jay’s style is so great.

Glad I caught McShann, Johnson and Hinton live. Who's the drummer, the tempo slows down. Compare the first bars, and the last!
