I am an Hispanic American, married to a woman from Mexico. Neither one of us sees or hears anything racist or bigoted in this song. Anyone who does needs to take a deep breath, and really ask themselves if this is truly racist or if they are just knee jerk reacting because of the theme and tone of this song. Awesome song BTW!!! My favorite Jay and the Americans song.

Yes it was a simpler time. One has to wonder whether we have truly progressed in certain ways with smart phones, IPods, IPads, notebooks. This was a time when we were contented to have a phonograph and listen to 45's. Jay and The Americans were an experience. We listened, we say along. We remembered every word--still do. We rushed home from school to listen to American Bandstand. Our dreams were sweet with hopes of love--love which Jay and the Americans expressly so meaningfully...

I was a teen living in south Texas in 1964 when this song came out. No one ever thought it was racist or that Jay & the Americans were making fun of Hispanics. It was just a great ballad with a good beat. EVERYONE LOVED IT. Cheers!

The 60's had so many groups so many songs and so many hits, truely the golden age of rock & roll. Today's is a great wasteland.

This is a fantastic song and a fantastic rendition as well. I read the story by Tommy Boyce on how he, Bobby Hart, and Wes Farrell wrote this tune together. Tommy commented on how he & Bobby did most of the writing, but Wes would come up with the minute details that "completed" the song, stuff like "Vamos, Jose's on his way", etc. Again, just a great record in every way! Nice to see the guys goofing around while performing on "Action".

I don't hear one word in this song that implies anything of a racist nature! Saw Jay Black perform last week in my local park - and his voice is almost exactly the same as back then! He was able to hit those high notes beautifully and that says something for a man who is 74 yrs old! He sang this song and received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd!

Looks like this was from the great show, "Where The Action Is", which had a lot of outside shots and was a daily rock and roll show produced by Dick Clark. Great video! P.S...that's Kenny Vance from Kenny Vance and the Planotones ("Looking for an Echo") standing behind Jay (David) Black. Kenny was one of the original Americans.

I used to hear this song all the time growing up, until the local oldies station dropped an entire decade of music from their rotation. And even though it's been roughly seven years (and what a rough seven years they were!) since I've heard anything by Jay and the Americans, I still remember this song (and many others) word for word. Ah, the power of a musical memory is astounding. Such a wonderful song this is!

This is exactly what music should be about, a band having fun and making a decent tune into the bargain. I am 50yo and from the UK. I have never heard this band before, perhaps they didn't have any hits over here? What year is this? It sounds mid-sixties. The video reminds me of Opus 17 by Frankie Valli & Four Seasons.

Fantastic piece of Pop composition. I get flashbacks of my older brothers' "Hoodlum " friends. Ha Ha. Apparently produced before we "Required" a jump cut in the video image because our A.D.D. wouldn't allow us enough focus to enjoy a still image in it's entirety. Long live classic art!!

Rocmaven, I have see Jay Black/David more times than I can count including his fabulous show in June. I would not waste my time seeing anyone "posing" as Jay & the Americans. I am not saying whether or not the "new" Jay has talent, but I would bet he wouldn't be in Brooklyn at the bandshell if he wasn't using the name Jay & the Americans and was using just his name! He would be just like thousands of other guys struggling to get work, not performing at the popular venue in Brooklyn.
