Fun Fact: The woman playing the piano at the beginning of the video was the legendary singer/activist Nina Simone and the song she singing is Four Women the story of 4 black Women with different skin tones and their struggles in society and that the song Jay sampled in this video it's the "My skin is black part"
@notmyname20817 жыл бұрын
This song really addresses the colourism and division within the black community. Jay wants the young guys to be better than him, for their money to be generational . Jay is hoping that 10 percent of people who hear this song will do something. He knows not everyone will listen.

Dumbo is neighborhood in Brooklyn that underwent gentrification. The Dumbo neighborhood is actually an acronym. But the bar was a double entendre also because he called people dumbo. Also Holly is right about Sarah Baartman it took many years after her passing for her body to even be buried because European government had her body on display after she passed away like she was a spectacle. Because that's how they viewed her. And I only knew about that because I have a degree in African American Studies.

Miike Haze yeah I think I misunderstood the lyric thanks for clarifying though. When I thought he said dumbo at that part I thought he was speaking of himself and people who weren't investing and just wasting money on the material that can't get them wealth. But though I thought he was speaking of himself I thought he speaking more about the mass of people. But thank you. You made me see it in a different way.

i like how you analysed this vid.... I think he's trying to get at the younger people to try and change their mindset...there's things that we as black people don't get so if he tells you the the blueprint then hopefully a few people will get it and them few people might be the ones that affect change. You can't save everyone...This is all generational, so we can make the start for our kids who can then make the start for their kids. At a certain point in life you realise you are doing it not so you can enjoy but to give your children the start that you never had so they don't have to go through what you had to . A lot of jewels in this vid but like you said you have to go out there and find it..... It's like what Melvin talked about in that Baby Boy movie.... "Guns & Butter" gun are the things that when you buy them they appreciate with value, like property, artwork, land, and the butter is the things that when you buy them they depreciate with value and are not worth nothing like cars, clothes, jewelry etc. Sorry it got a bit preachy there didn't mean to write a novel...but yeah 2 thumbs up with this reaction keep it up.

It's concerning that the response is "Jay, I completely understand what you're trying to tell me, BUT." Like, the man is giving the entire Black community the lessons he's learned so that they can not only be successful but MORE successful than he is for Generations. And the response is "That makes sense, but I wanna be young and free."

when y'all were talking about how everybody's young and stuff like that and he's trying to tell them to "wise up" and it reminds me of what my momma used to tell me, "wouldn't a test be so much easier if somebody who did it already gave you all the answers?" my mom is 53, going on 54 and i'm 13. she was basically saying she'd been through life already and she always gives me advice on stuff like friends, and boys and other stuff. and you usually, ignore the stuff your parents tell you because you feel like it's so old, they were like riding donkey when people were like that, this is the new age. I feel like Jay is kinda like that now. He's trying to teach us lessons and only a little of the younger generation will listen, while the rest will go out and try to do it the hard way, and find themselves dead or in a real tough spot. He gave examples of this stuff he went through. We've seen him go through some of these specific parts of his life and people still will refuse to listen . But yeah, that's what I got from that comment

What i got from when he was walking through the hold with all the chained slaves and he said, "y'all still taking advances huh? Me and my niggas taking real chances ugh." It basically saying all you people are taking advances (cheques) for a product, album yet to be produced and you end up chained to whoever it is and there's so much of them as evidenced the the slaves in chains. Notice he's the only free one walking about (could be an ego boost but i doubt it, it is fact) and he's taking chances win/lose if he loses he tried if makes it and wins, he gets it all and the full credit.

I think that's there's more than one message in this song. The main one I got was to save everything valuable you have and pass it down throughout your family. Successful young black men rapping or playing sports are out here flashing money and spending like crazy. It's like for what? People are going to forget you down the line. Pass it down to your children. What do you think spending all that cash is going to do? In the end people are still going to view you the same no matter how much money you have. You still nigga.

well actually early in his career he would be rapping about that stuff but he would use a layer of self-reflection to show that that's not the sort of life he wanted or even stayed in. Cuz you have to think back in the day everybody wasn't talking about money in cars all the time back in the 90s there was still a significant amount of rappers talking about living the hood life but informing their listeners that it's not what they want them to do or show it in such a bleak unappealing Manor where somebody wants to get out of it or understand how they're feeling and know that that's not what they need to do.

First I just want to start by saying I truly respect you both...no comment on these other "KZbin couples" smh 🤦🏾♂️..... & on that note its so much to digest from the video Jay laid out for us...S Dot you nailed by bringing up the important starter for this video, which is the fact its a cartoon...all about imaging with any & everything we watch...has to attract or intrigue the viewer...Jay definitely did that...like you said a child will be able to understand this...at least the concept that is..they will obviously have their questions but will be a lot easier to explain with the images of the cartoon...Sarah Baartman i did not know about so thank me for putting me on game...definitely will be reading up on her...Dumbo from my understanding was a project or section in Brooklyn...i think ppl are overlooking what i feel is the best attribute of this entire album n obviously on this song as well, which is his transparency...i think Jay is saying look I did it wrong coming up so i want to drop game not judge but drop game on the younger generation so they can not just be like me but better...i believe thats what he is dropping all through 4:44 but again especially on this song...its as if he is showing you as far back as he can from a "where we started", our history...to OJ, when we started thinking bc of a little money & a little class we were better or viewed different... but when it's all said & done no matter what we do or how far we have come, the view is "Still Nigga"! Apologies for the book lol...but it's just a lot to dissect...stay on the grind with these videos....oh & one last thing, unless im overlooking it i see yall rock wit Meek a lil bit...check out Meek Mill - TBA (Young Black America)

Maybe they are not familiar with his albums but Jay has been saying some version of this for over 20 years in his music and interviews, and through his own actions.
