+Martin Brand I'm a catch wrestler, and how is Ashihara better?
@martinbrand66529 жыл бұрын
+Elvis Calzone Ashihara Karate practices all punches on face (with palm heel), elbow shots from blind spots, kick on growing, grapplings and throwing (combined techniques with Judo/Aikido). Self-defense techniques against buttons/knives. They will teach you how to practically knock out multiple guys. They are open to practice everyday. It's a lot of fun. To be honest with you, I never seen Yamaki's practices, but on his tournament video, he was more leaning on his weight in stead of get away from opponents way and use the opponent's momentum. You can identify the difference between Ashihara's moves and Yamaki's by watching on KZbin. Please see: "Joko Ninomiya (He was trained by Hideyuki Ashihara and *Shigeru Oyama. *S. Oyama was awarded by The White House/Ron Reagan for his excellency in training )" Joko Ninomiya became the Champion in All Japan, 1978 (Kyokushin Karate). Kenji Yamaki, on the other hand was using too much holding against the opponent's clothes in a tournament, which I didn't like. He might has developed a better personality today though. But you know what? Ashihara and Yamaki both welcome you to experience one free trial practice, if you ask them.

Thank you for the information. I'll watch some tape of Ashihara and Ninomiya.

+Elvis Calzone That other commenter was a bit too dismissive of Yamaki. Yamaki Kenji was a world champ, a three time all Japan champ, and completed the 100-man kumite challenge: a test of human willpower that few fighters on the planet could even hope to complete. Additionally, he succeeded all this in an era full of some of the most respected fighters to come out of full-contact Karate: Francisco Filho, Akiyoshi (Shokei) Matsui, and Hajime Kazumi to name a few. My point is, even if you end up training your striking in another style in the long run, finding an instructor with the same kind of high-level accomplishments and full contact experiences that Yamaki had is a rare thing. Martial artists like Yamaki, who have willingly jumped into the blender and managed to not get juiced, typically have a treasure trove of experimentally-tested knowledge that is unique to them. I trained with Yamakin shihan for a few years before I had to move away. At the time (over 10 years ago), he had just come to America and there was a bit of a language barrier, but his English has significantly improved since then and he often has bilingual students on hand to help translate the ideas. He is an excellent teacher, and easily the most disciplined man I ever met, but also has a great sense of humor and is an all around good guy. Sparring with friends who have trained in other striking styles (like Muay Thai, kickboxing, Taekwondo, and other styles of Karate), I have noticed the primary strengths of the striking I learned from Yamaki ryu lay in the ability to deliver powerful strikes in a deceptive manner and the ability to properly block attacks. The former is offensively valuable because it allows you to keep your opponent guessing and lets you control when and how to convince your opponent that a credible threat is or isn't coming, the latter is an excellent skill defensively because you have more control over your position and are less likely to be pressured into a corner. Obviously, the degree to which those observations apply will scale with mastery of the fighter and the skill of the opponent. If you watch Yamaki's old fights, you see that he is a master of defense, and picks his strikes carefully, landing hard blows when an opening presents itself, especially his body punches, low kicks, front kicks, and knee strikes. The full-contact sparring in his school was close to Kyokushin rules, but he still teaches the self-defense version of his art, which includes things like groin kicks and elbowing the face, among other techniques you don't see in competition. I knew people there that had studied Ashihara and other Kyokushin off-shoot styles back in Japan that are famous for their more "combat focused" teaching, but they still learned alot from Yamaki and incorporated that knowledge into what they learned from their other striking styles. I recommend training Yamaki ryu, even if only to get another perspective on striking arts, similar to how some catch wrestlers also train BJJ to expand their knowledge base and learn how to adapt their catch wrestling against that style.
