For a long time I've been asked my opinion on the popular Honda conversion for the Lotus Elise. Now, thanks to Essex Autosport I've learned a bit more about what goes into making them and how they drive in this two part special.

Cletus, that shirt fills me with equal measures of shock and awe. It is, quite simply, magnificent, and you wear it with effortless sangfroid and aplomb. I am, also, much taken with the concept of this video, the quid pro quo benefitting both Shaun and yourself, plus providing two videos for your discerning audience. A genuin win, win, win situation. I eagerly await part two.

Awesome vid! Essex Auto really know their stuff. Ive got a turbo 2zz and its a bit of a weapon with 370whp but if I was to do it from scratch I would go SC Honda or turbo

I’ve heard the 2ZZ’s oil pump is a bit of a weak point while we’re talking about elises. If you want to swap the engine on a Toyota engine Elise I’d go for a BOE built 2ZZ.

Having enjoyed an afternoon lapping a race prepared Honda Elise around Oulton Park many years ago, I need no convincing that it was one of the most competent converted road cars ever devised. I must confess however, that I had to watch this video twice because my concentration was so distracted by seeing daylight through Sean's ear lobe and intrigued by his other piercings, together with his colourful tattoos, that I wasn't listening the first time. I was encouraged to learn that the driveshaft issue has been resolved despite the negative effect of setting the power unit further back. In the meanwhile I suspect that the JayEmm fan boys will have had shrivelled scrotum syndrome upon hearing the minimum costs of these conversions. This ain't no Halford's special. This is a big boy's toy.

Tonight Mathew I am Going to be. Reflecting on my comment, I am at a loss to detect what you have judged to be arrogance or, indeed, ignorance and so I would appreciate some clarification here. So, beyond just throwing a couple of unfounded and, frankly, brash accusations, I'm curious about what exactly triggered you. Surely, we can exclude any connection with the Lotus and that leaves a possible sensitivity with the subject of tattoos or body piercings. Are you one of those highly decorated people? Tonight Mathew I am going to be, The Illustrated Man? A peacock? I hold the view that individuals in a free society are at liberty to dress or adorn in any manner of their legal choice and in doing so allow the equal freedom of others to observe or opine on such matters. All of which leaves little room for snowflakes.

Essex Autosport Ltd. Hello back! I'm relieved that you didn't takes offence at my comment as none was in any way intended. I was delighted to learn that you specialise in this conversion and continue to develop the installation. My experience with this concept is limited to the pioneering work developed by Simon Scuffham many years ago. Simon's intellect is matched with very competent race driving skills. I remember comparing notes with him and his confessing, like me, to a lack of courage to find the limit of grip on the high speed corner, 'Island Bend' on the approach to, 'Shell' at Oulton Park. A high speed off there would have ended in tears. Imagination keeps us alive. There is lots of KZbin content uploaded by Simon. Meanwhile I wish you good fortune in the future while bringing joy to Lotus owners.

Really interesting video and great to have a segment with Essex Auto first. Please don't delay the 2nd part for too long as I cant wait to hear your opinion on this conversion. When I was saving for my 111R all I kept hearing was this was the engine Lotus should have used..........cant wait! Btw if you're gonna be driving a N/A you do realise we'll be calling for a follow-up Supercharged review also 😉

I have the S1 Exige that Shaun alluded to in the video, my second s1 exige Honda that Shaun has built for me: Honda K20a JRSC supercharged / Chargecooled = FUN! Watch this space, it’s on Jayemms radar ;-)

I think a lot of people still connect these Honda K20 conversions to Sinclair (Romford) / Essex Autosport (Witham) run by Wayne & Jill Sweeting. Maybe worth explaining that its changed ownership now ?

The transfer of ownership was to the owner's son in law, so it was a family thing rather than an outsider taking over

Hey nice one Shaun. I remember visiting Wayne & Jill about 10 years ago & driving his yellow Honda'd Exige - fantastic! I REALLY wanted one, but as I'm not based in the UK or even EU, we could never work out a way it could be done :-(. I do however have some EA in my Lotus, as I'm building a Duratec 2.3 powered one with part of your conversion kit :-) Great to know EA continues with your new chapter.
