Only one car ever received the engine, the already luxurious Q7. At almost £100,000 the Q7 V12 was £40,000 more expensive than the next cheapest model, and more even than a Cayenne Turbo.

I believe that the Touareg, unlike this one, is a very very capable off roader. I got the V10 Tdi. For other’s here the W12 was a petrol engine and the R50 was a V10Tdi suped-up version (with 350hp instead of 313 of the regular V10, and 850nm of torque instead of 750nm).

It had V12 TDI quattro badge and also it has a different rear bumper than the regular Q7. On top of that it was a swis license plates and they dont put stickers on regular cars, they drive the real things.

@@diffypoo It wouldn't be any faster than the V10, it would be far heavier because this engine weighs like 400Kg, it would be much more expensive defeating the purpose of any fuel savings because no one buys an R8 to drive 30k miles a year. And it simply wouldn't fit which is the reason they gave up on it, the engine is so big they had to lengthen the chassis of the prototype to drop it in. Just leave truck engines in trucks.

A little bit irrelevant but have you considered the Lexus ls430 over the Mercedes s class I mention this due to the purchase of the s500 vs the. S320cdi I would love to see a UK owners impressions / owners experience and whether the reliability stands true PS it might just save you a huge repair bill 😆😆 Update I hear the :v8 lexus engines cost a lot more to maintain vs the v6 engines

I remember first seeing the V12 Q7 on Top Gear against the equally non sensical BMW X5M. Both absolutely ludicrous over the top cars and yet for all that I loved the Germans for making them.....just because they could....bloody expensive laughs though, even back then, maybe 10 years ago they were £76k (BMW) and £96k (Audi).

I remember Clarkson's review of this vehicle - he was equally as baffled by its existence. But it seems Audi's timing for the release of this vehicle was a bit off as we all know what happened in 2009 - that's probably why so few were sold.

I do like it when a car manufacturer lets the engineers off the lead to go nuts and make something stupid. You can imagine the conversation by the kettle: Engineer 1: "I was thinking we could stuff a massive engine in a Q7 for laugh" Engineer 2: "What about the V10 from the S8?" Engineer 1: "Too predictable, I'm feeling a bit crazy" Engineer 3: "What about the diesel V10 we put in the Toureg?" Engineer 1: "But we already put that in a VW, we can't do the same thing just with an Audi badge, that's what we always do." Engineer 4: "So add more cylinders and make it a V12!" All: "HELL YES!" Engineer 1: "I wonder if we could fit that in an R8..."

I am watching the video and cannot help but think what a waste of a V12 diesel this vehicle is the entire time. If I had it my way, I would splurge on an RS6 sportwagon with a manual transmission and the V12 TDI, were such a unicorn to actually exist. It is a crime against the car enthusiast community that the V12 TDI R8 never got the proper manual transmission designed to handle the 1,000 Nm of torque.

Thank heavens for Ferdinand Piëch. He did this and the Phaeton and the Veyron. Great video but can you stop being borgified by the americans by using "Super" for ever adjective or adverb, it dumbs down the English language. Rather than super "xxxxx" all the time other words such as very, really, amazingly, exceedingly ( copyright Mr Kipling ) , indescribably, incredibly can be used which also give various levels of how much it is. Using super cannot do that unless you use super-super .... and that really winds me up. It's being as lazy grammatically as a V12 diesel overtaking a Nissan Micra. My friend from the USA used that on a visit recently and I had to refrain from hitting him over the head with an outofthisworldly large frying pan.

That Q7 V12 is my dream machine since they came out and always wanted one. and I still find them very practical. I Iove the power and smoothness of one. Wish I had money. I dunno what sort of narrow minded people that would find it pointless. Hopefully id win the lotto just to have one of them. @@JayEmmOnCars on my previous car, a Volvo C70 D5, the engine was detuned slightly for the auto gearbox as the 'box couldn't handle the full torque the engine produced. There are companies out there that will quite happily re-map to give the full torque plus more. A few guys on the Volvo forum had it done & all of their gearboxes lasted a matter of weeks lol.

The thing about this engine, as well as the 4.2 tdi, is that the first three gears are too short to benefit much from all the torque. but once you hit fourth and the engine starts to get a little resistance, and let the two electronic vgt turbos synchronize the boost from each bank, then you start to realize that 60-120 feels about as fast as 0-60 did. you need to get some speed and get up in the higher gears before these engines start to make any sense. the low gears just drain away before the engine has a chance to build boost and deliver much torque.
