The beauty of a 90° V configuration is perfect primary balance, whether it be a twin, 4, 6, 8 cylinder, whatever. However, each bank of a V6 (and V12) is also implicitly well balanced, unlike a V4 or V8. The main reason for differing V angles (i.e. other than 90°) is packaging. A 60° engine can be made more compact and 120° has been used for racing in order to obtain as low a profile as possible. But there is no mechanical advantage to using a V angle other than 90°. So there's nothing wrong with the 90° V of the F-Type's engine.
@brois8413 жыл бұрын
Underrated comment. The external angle mostly matters for packaging. The crank will determine the firing, tuning, etc.
@UKenGB3 жыл бұрын
@@brois841 Just looked again at the beginning of this video and Jay is talking nonsense about the V angle. Also, no-one and I mean NO-ONE makes a V6 by cutting 2 cylinders off a V8. They may design a V6 using the same cylinder dimensions, cams etc but why not. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Too many reviewers are fixated on 'new' and denigrate anything that appears similar to an older product. This is just stupid. Use the correct design for the job and if that's the same as you used last time in a different product (engine), what's the problem with that. If Jay thinks that the V6 crank is simply a shortened V8 crank, I suggest he needs to learn more about engine design.

To restore even firing intervals in a 90 deg block, the common big end journals are off-set by 30 deg, to simulate a 60 deg vee for the six. 90 deg in a V8 has even firing intervals and excellent balance with a cross-plane crank.

I bought an F-Type V6 but traded it for a V8. The V8 tunes to 700HP for $1500, making it absolutely unbeatable by any car under $5 billion dollars. The RWD V8 is lighter than the AWD V6. There is really no reason for AWD in the V6. So I agree the F-Type V6 doesn’t cut it. The V8 is the all around best car ever made. Ever.

Great reviews, James and Tom. I’m a bit biased, as an Evora 400 owner, but the two reviews rang so true. One issue that didn’t come up is interior space. I’m 6’5” and fit easily in the Evora (I actually have the seat a little forward of its most rearward position) and I felt claustrophobic in the Jag. I don’t think the Lotus is quite as usable day to day as the Jag but there isn’t much in it and the Lotus gives so much as a driving machine and as a spectacle for bystanders.

I have no rattles or build quality issues with mine. Drove to Monaco and back with 0 issues. I chose the f type over other cars in its bracket because imo it was the most exotic looking car which was affordable to run and insure at my age. I could have bought something like an M4 or M2 but too boring and bland in terms of appearance. There's nothing for the money that looks as exotic imo.

A bmw m4 and m2 Bland? in whot way because m2 has wide arches and aggressive front and m4 is just evil looking at front and most would say the best looking coupe out there today And id say lot more heavy on the fuel than a m2 m4 with that 3ltr v6 supercharged engine
@fairygodbrother6 жыл бұрын
jonny jones I averaged 35mpg to Monaco which is pretty good for a supercharged v6. If you show a non car person an M4 or M2 it looks like any other BMW. It's samey. You look at an f type and you know what it is. With an m car it's like is that actually an M4 or is it an m body kit spec car or has he made a replica etc. There is no replicating an f type. I did test drive the M4 and I didn't like the interior. I don't like the M2 either I personally feel it looks cheaper inside and out for the price compared to an f type. I don't know of anyone who's said you should have got an M4 it's better looking since buying my f type. that's including my friends who love BMWs and own a couple of e92 m3s m140i and an e46 csl. They agreed with my choice.

Don't worry Tom, I'm a huge fan of the F-Type, it looks and sounds fantastic too! It's interesting to hear J talk about engineering compromise when the Evora sports an engine and gearbox from another manufacturer. A gearbox which I believe is a well known compromise. Also, look at the price tag, $70k for the Jag and $90k for the Lotus here in CA. I also think the audience is very different which is why Tom has never driven a Lotus.
@JayEmmOnCars6 жыл бұрын
Jag don't make their gearbox either. I love the Jag V8, but the V6 is not cool. Historically Jaguar have also used Ford engines and pieces too.
@andrewausterfield67106 жыл бұрын
The point I'm making is that (nearly) ALL cars are an engineering compromise. The manufacturer knows who they want to sell a vehicle to and they engineer it to the price point for that customer. Saying the V6 is not cool compared to the V8 is not really helpful to most people. The V8 is at least $35k, and as much as $55k more on the BASE price. By the time I've optioned it and paid tax I'm looking at double the price. Not many people have that kind of budget flexibility. AND, when you really think about it, driving straight roads with traffic lights at every intersection does it make a huge amount of difference in everyday driving? Of course the Jag had Ford switch gear, they were owned by Ford at one point. Astons of the same era also had Ford switch gear. My Lotus has a bunch of Vauxhall switchgear and an Isuzu engine as both were owned by GM at the time. I'm a huge Lotus fan and I love the Lotus content, your delivery is great (constructive criticism), but I think you need to differentiate which cars should and should not be viewed through the Lotus lens. There has never been a cross-over between these ownership groups so why force it? Of course the cars feel different, one is a lightweight mid-engined pocket rocket, the other a heavy-weight boulevard cruiser. I'm starting a drinking game - take a chug every time you hear the phrase 'in the Evora'.

Andrew I appreciate your viewpoint. One thing to remember is mine will always be UK centric. Over here, a Corvette starts at $100,000. There is one dealer. They sell ONE car a month! I can buy a used V8 F Type for less than a used Evora 400. I suspect they are way cheaper here than in the USA. I also live surrounded by straight roads, and obviously that impacts my viewpoint too. I think the comparison with the Lotus is quite valid. Both V6. Both near 400hp. Both British. Both around 70k with pricier options available. Both make a good noise. I do try my best to keep comparisons relevant! Eg my hatchback videos. Thanks for your continued viewership, i do appreciate it.

JayEmm on Cars JayEmm on Cars Saying the f type v6 isn't cool is a bit daft to the majority of people who praise and love the car. Comparing the f type to an evora is also pretty pointless. I found this to be one of your oddest reviews and contradictory. I see what you are saying that people want to see what an evora is like compared to other cars but it's apples and oranges. There are more than enough reasons why the f type is so much more popular than an evora.
@andrewausterfield67106 жыл бұрын
I understand you're uk centric - but I expect the v6 and v8 to be roughly the same cost ratios in quids or $$. The point being few people will shop for the V6 and be sold up to the V8 - even though the V8 may be the 'better' car. On paper I think the Lotus and Jag look much much closer than they do in real life. The fact you have a Lotus but never looked at the Jag, and Tom has a Jag but has never driven a Lotus says everything about the real world. It may have been interesting to explore why this is in the video. The Evora is in very limited supply here on the resale market so values are up with new models, clearly there are more f-types but if you're looking for a 2017 V8 you're going to pay around $90K plus tax - very comparable to the Evora. Different horses for different courses!

I agree with Jay's review. And in my opinion (all due respect to the owner and other F-type fans, my 2004 XK8 is better in every way. The engine sounds divine. The looks, well what can I say. The ride/handling balance makes it feel like the car was set up by very serious engineers. It has basically every option the F-type in this video has. The only options it doesn't have which were available at the time are radar guided cruise control and computer controlled dampers. In terms of tech, let those two options (which admittedly mine doesn't have) sink in, those were available in the year 2000! I know Jay has said he wasn't a huge fan of the original XK8, but I have a suspicion (and this is the biggest downside to the car) that the one he drove probably had knackered suspension. They just eat through rubber bushes, and there are many of them. A fully refreshed and sorted XK8 drives so differently one with worn out suspension that you would honestly swear they were two completely different cars. It's also extremely sensitive to tyres, I mean like you would think you were driving two different cars just from the tyres being worn out. But I still maintain, it's better than the F-type in every single way. Sound, looks, fuel economy, running costs, and honestly it's just a real Jag. In my opinion it's a real shame the way Jag have gone. I have to struggle to recognise any qualities in the F-type that originally attracted me to the XK8. The problems all started when they switched to aluminium designs in 2006, they abandoned all their heritage.

I simply cannot imagine why JLR wouldn't let you have one to road test. Was it really that difficult to find anything positive to say about it without letting your obvious prejudice get in the way? And no you're not an engineer.

My "Base" level 2012 Jag XK 5.0 V8 had a better standard spec. Thing I HATED about it and why I sold it was the seats were some of the worst I have ever encountered.

Every time I think about the F-Type it annoys me. Why is it so bloody heavy, there are other things but It's just a rubbish drivers car despite looking so good. It is an opportunity missed imo. The V8 is absolutely delightful but I still wouldn't have one. They should have split it into two models, one for touring and one for driving.

Hi Jay, normally I enjoy your reviews but unfortunately not this one. You've taken one car from a luxury car maker and pitted it against another car from a rare breed specialist sports car manufacturer and surprise surprise the Jaguar is heavier and less dynamic. Bit of a silly comparison in my view.
@JayEmmOnCars5 жыл бұрын
You'd be amazed how many people were asking for the comparison - and have a look at the other comments, surprising so many people don't appreciate the fact the Jag is also less comfortable and less practical

I wonder why the V angle of 60 degrees for a V6 is better than 90 degrees... i'll do a google search

Have a look. It's basically the fact you can space the firing evenly - 90 degrees is correct for a V8 but not a V6.

"Yeah, the Jaguar... I don't hate it!" High praise, indeed. But not too surprising for a guy who was a diehard Lotus enthusiast and Evora owner, at the time of recording. As an older enthusiast, it is just astonishing that a 380 hp / 380 lb-ft, supercharged Jaguar elicits a 'meh' response from anyone. But that's the time we live in. The Jag, like so many others, is just not that special because there are so many incredibly well-developed cars to choose from. Unfortunately, most have been forced to converge into nearly interchangeable technical packages. In comparisons, hairs are routinely split in attempting to choose among them: 'Well, this car's navigation screen is sooo much better...' I like cars whose character makes me look for excuses to take them out and enjoy them, which has absolutely nothing to do, really, with the numbers. In this case, I'd say the Lotus is far more likely to evoke that response. It's more focused, more visceral, more exciting, with more sporting purity. The Jag is for your wife who doesn't really care about cars. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Wow!..... “You don’t hate it!” Big praise. It seems you are at odds with virtually the entire motoring press but that doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to your opinion. It does strike me somewhat odd that the overwhelming majority of the most esteemed motoring journalists on the planet herald this vehicle as one of the most important and accomplished vehicles in the past decade and the best you have to say about it is “I don’t hate it”. A bit harsh but like I said you are most certainly entitled to your opinion. That said it would have been good if you could have driven it in the way it was intended. Ie, not on wet narrow country roads with the owner sitting next to you.

Comparing it to an Evora is a bit unfair, their totally different animals. The Evora is a low, lightweight track slag, a poor mans Porsche GT3, and very good too., the F Type is more a Grand Tourer Coupe, meant more for spirited country roads and longer trips.

I’ve never once looked to see what mpg I get with my F-Type. Same with my C63 AMG. I do ironically look at what my truck gets but maybe because the screen shows so much info. I think I just can’t be bothered to look, I just don’t care. I’m not wealthy, I think it more has to do with the experience. It would be like getting with the hottest women you’ve thought of and stopping to ask mid session if she’d like to go slower. She says she’d loving the pace and you do too but you’re thinking of slowing it down. Sure, slow can be fun but you’re taking an emotional experience and being analytical. If that’s you then keep looking for another toy because this ones not doing it for you.

From a purely objective viewpoint, I can't say I like either of these cars. Six cylinder engines should be straight, not bent like these two buggers. V6's don't respond well to naturally aspirated tuning, but all the junk they carry, to stop themselves shaking apart, means turbocharging isn't possible, so parasitic supercharging is the only option. Both cars are built from the parts bin. This starts with their engines, and carries on from there. With regards to the video, Cletus, I feel if Tom and yourself did a third video where you discussed your likes and dislikes and differences of opinion, that would be very interesting. Needless to say, the shirt is awesome‼️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@JayEmmOnCars6 жыл бұрын
Turbocharged V6s have happened, and I expect we may see more soon. I share your affinity for a straight six but it isnt always a practical choice
@MrKeyboardCommando6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the turbo V6's are awful. Manufacturers are hoping F1 can sort-out the problems by developing their 1.6 litre four-stroke turbocharged 90 degree V6 engines. The V6 is shorter then the straight 6 and, therefore, easier to package. I don't know if we'll ever see the F1 developed V6's because of the big move to electric cars.

Great review but if I may offer your channel another title 😉 l.l.cool Jay 😂 aka lotus lover Jay I kinda thought 💭 the Jag is aimed at the S4 cabriolet and TT crews and at that market it would be my own preference. I think you’re evora is aimed for a different animal eg if you were to do a head to head with a Cayman R or similar that would be a Tony Bellew vs David Haye rematch 👌🏽 I have just been over to see Marco on your recommendation but there wasn’t anyone there🤷🏽♂️ has he moved from Manton lane or have I just been unlucky? Good car knowledge and useful review however not sure why this was compared to an Evora as very different cars. The heavy Jag brings the looks, drama, noise, and road presence, and the Evora brings the drive-ability with that stripped out ‘kit car’ look (albeit you lose some dignity getting in and out). If used as a GT, I know which one I’d prefer to spend over an hour in! Sorry for whatever Jaguar did to you in the past 😉
