There was a lot of groups back then both black & white who the music industry didn’t want to show their faces because of how they sounded. What most of us forget is that most of this soul music came from black people who never got the credit they deserved for writing such amazing songs. When you look into the back grounds of these groups they all came from a place that heard songs originally sang in Juke Joints like Jerry Lee Lewis. I’m so glad times changed & now people don’t have to hide I just wish that the people who sang songs originally are given the credit that’s properly deserved & earned.

I was fortunate to have caught Three Dog Night live 3 times in the space of a couple of months when they reformed for a brief period in the early 1980s and went out to play small venues. It was in northeast Ohio at both the Akron Agora and the Cleveland Agora. They really sounded fantastic and played all their hits - this despite singer Chuck Negron's continuing descent into an extremely harrowing years-long battle with heroin addiction that probably none of us knew about at the time. Then at around 3/4 of the way through their set, Cory Wells did this song, and it was the hands-down show-stopper EVERY TIME. He had us all up on our feet as he did his maniacal "HOLD HER, SQUEEZE HER, NEVER LEAVE HER, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA, YOU GOT TA TRY, TRY, TRY, ...." jumping up and down like a soulful madman while Mike Alsup delivered his superbly tasteful lead electric guitar lines. They must have played this for at least 8 minutes every time. We went WILD!

If you liked this, you need to check out Wilson Pickett’s version of The Beatles Hey Jude. Features Duane Allman on guitar. Same soulful feel. Totally different than the original.

The movie The Commitments has a killer version of this song, with the lead by a 16-year-old Andrew Strong who you would swear had decades of experience.

@Susan L I just made a comment that I loved all 3 voices but Cory was my favorite..that husky bluesiness. And I always felt like his personality shone through. Don't know how right I am but I always felt that. I've loved their music since I was a teen in 1969. Saw them in concert twice. To me, your dear brother was always a stand-out. He sparkled. He still does.💙 Much love to you from a lifelong fan in Kentucky.💙
