When he calls them gorillas, he just means they're big strong muscle guys - unlike him, who is a skinny music nerd. Really, he's picking on himself in this song as much or more than he picks on the guys the girls he wants are dating. But for reals, EVERY song on this same album Look Sharp is a classic. One of the most underrated classic albums of all time.

@@josephself2610 A&M released a special 10", 2-record set of "Look Sharp" (I don't think it was a promo), with a little hole in the lower right-hand corner of the cover that held a tiny "Look Sharp" black button (with white print) in it! Did you ever have that one? Late '70s, record companies were coloring records, making die-cut records, making 'em smaller, swirling colors, making 'em smell like stuff (rubber, strawberries, raspberries)!

A minimalist New Wave song recorded with his band, "Is She Really Going Out With Him" was Joe Jackson's amusing commentary on hot girls hooking up with butt-ugly dudes. Jackson makes this clear in the marvelous opening line, "Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street." In a Songfacts interview with Joe Jackson, he explained that the song was written with a humor that was lost on some listeners. Said Jackson: "That is just one of those songs that started with the title. I heard that phrase somewhere and I thought that could be a kind of funny song about gorgeous girls going out with monsters. It just started from there. It was just a funny song, or supposed to be funny. It was a great surprise to me when some people interpreted it as being angry."

Glad you're discovering Joe Jackson, brother! Not too many reactors cover his material. I used to follow his discography all through the 80's as his music can be very eclectic but at the same time interesting. He's a multi-instrumentalist and classically trained on the piano (plays a decent sax too!). Started with new-wave/neo-punk music and went on to big-band, jazz, pop, synth-tech, right on to classical music. His lyrics are witty with the occasional touch of cynicism but very honest and truthful, especially when it came to the ballads. Now you got me to go back to my JJ collection!! 😀👍
