Layne Staley had one of the saddest deaths 😭
@jimmydavies90385 жыл бұрын
Jerry actually did very few of the harmonies on the records. Just the live stuff. He was amazing tho. Layne would lay down nearly all the vocal harmonies over his own voice.
@slayerdc97785 жыл бұрын
@@jimmydavies9038 not true. He wrote the harmonies. But he influenced Cantrell to sing them and in doing so made cantrell a great singer in the process. You can always hear the difference between their voices. Cantrell sang alot on studio takes. Shit heaven beside you is almost all Cantrell
@jimmydavies90385 жыл бұрын
Daniel Castillo there are many songs where you can hear Jerry. That said you can hear 2 and 3 layers of laynes voice in probably 10 of their songs. He’d go to the studio and lay down all of the harmonies himself. He worked tirelessly at it even in his last session with the band. Jerry is heard more often in songs like would and heaven beside you because they were more of a call and reply and the contrast in their voices was the whole point

Alice in Chains was the greatest band of the grunge era, in my opinion. The lead singer, Layne Staley suffered with depression and drug addiction, and it took his life far too young. Unfortunately a lot of great art stems from a place of profound pain. That's why so many of the greats are like shooting stars - brilliantly lighting up the rest of us for a few moments before they burn out and fade away. Staley, Weiland, Hendrix, Cobain, Morrison, Joplin ... far too many. It's almost like our world is too mundane to contain such luminescent talent.

Layne Staley was the lead singer of Alice in Chains. He died on April 5, 2002. He was 34. He toured with Alice in Chains and his other band, Mad Season, until 1996 (or 1997, depening on what you call a "show"). He had been battling an addiction to heroin the majority of his adult life. His girlfriend - later fiance - Demri Perrot passed away from a heroin overdose. The majority of lyrics are written by the guitarist Jerry Cantrell and sung by Layne. Cantrell often said the lyrics were about innocuous things like breakups and political messages like censorship (as is the case with Man in the Box). Most fans believe - especially me - that the lyrics were about Layne and Demri's relationship with each other and heroin. The songs were deep, and they played an entire acoustic show on MTV Unplugged that was one of the best performances ever. Layne was an believable talent, whose life ended too quickly and shortly after Demri's. Alice in Chains is still touring today, albeit with a different lead singer (William Duvall). Duvall is not Layne, but he is an amazing singer in his own right. Staley's mother has unsuccessfully litigated Jerry Cantrell for the Alice in Chains name, leaving a bitter note to an already complicated relationship. They're one of the greatest bands ever. I'm always happy when I find someone listening.

This was the 'clean' version, BTW. All the pit, spit etc were originally shit. Layne Staley was a beast of a singer! (As we just saw!) You could mention him in the same sentence with Frank Sinatra, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Bjork, Annie Lenox, Chris Cornell and other greats and not be committing blasphemy! Yeah, unfortunately, heroin use was very pervasive among the grunge era musicians and there were many OD/suicides. BTW, most heroin overdoses occur after someone uses heroin for a time then quit, then relapse and start using again. Users slowly ramp up to a high dose during their initial use, then quit and their body cleans out and they loose their resistance (induced enzyme levels that quickly metabolize the heroin, to be technical) then when they relapse they start with the high dose they last used, which their bodies are no longer prepared to handle. Sorry, had to let the scientist out for a second there. Thanks for this.

It gives you pause to think about where these men fell short in their young lives. Being older, I wish there was someone who could come along side of these artists and help them get a firm grip on reality and life. It pains me to think about what we have lost from creative artists cutting their lives short and I feel for their families especially.
