A lot of lesser-known artists and songwriters were happy to have the royalty payments and a larger more well-known artist do a cover. It was quite commonplace in the 50s through the 80s.

Had to look it up myself Jamel, Delia Juanita Warrick (September 25, 1942 - October 18, 2008),[1] known professionally as Dee Dee Warwick, was an American soul singer. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the sister of singer Dionne Warwick, the niece of Cissy Houston, and a first cousin of singers Whitney Houston and Leontyne Price. Wikipedia. Knew Rod Stewart's was a cover, having most of his LPs, with and without the Faces from the 70s.

This has been SO MUCH FUN! If you ever continue this series, may I recommend comparing how many American (and British!) pop and southern rock groups covered songs written by Black American blues artists of the early 20th century. That's a fascinating rabbit-hole all by itself!

"We've Only Just Begun" was written for a commercial (by Paul Williams, who also sang it in the commercial), believe it or not. I always thought it was fleshed out as a full song and went straight to the Carpenters, but it looks like somebody else recorded it in-between. Here's a link to the original commercial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2i7apurrpyjfrM

Hi Jamal, UK watcher here, love your reactions, esp UK the rock music from my younger days…….with the recent death of the Queen, you should do a review of Jesseye Norman, a US born opera singer and one of the BEST in the world, sing ‘When I am Laid in Earth’ composed by Henry Purcell in 1689, yep 1689……I defy you to not to feel emotion or shed a tear, you will be amazed………..and it’s short only 3 or 4 mins long……….enjoy……😁

Some real surprises there. It made me thing of 'I Only Want To Be With You' sung by Dusty Springfield in 1963. I knew it had been covered by the Tourists (Annie Lennox) and Volbeat (Swedish heavy metal band). There are at least 50 to 60 other covers.

Not exactly a cover, but maybe similar to the Bon Jovi song (different lyrics put to the music of another song). Parts of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" by Rod Stewart is based on 2 earlier songs, which are "Taj Mahal" by Jorge Ben & "Put Something Down On It" by Bobby Womack. A lot of times the original was not a hit or maybe it was just an album track and not a single, but the remake was a big radio hit. So many people don't know it's a cover. Also probably not a lot of people today are listening to hit songs from the 1910s through 1940s. Songs that are called "standards" or "Great American Songbook" have been recorded by hundreds and even thousands of acts. So have many Christmas songs, such as "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" & "Silent Night".

I wasn't too surprised about The Carpenters. There are a lot of artists that never wrote their own music. They did covers or songs that were written for them. Sinatra and Elvis come to mind. Also, many, if not most groups, start as cover bands. Heart and The Beatles are good examples.

The best way I can surmise my experience with this is that some I knew were covers, some I didn't, some I had never heard period....sometimes the reason is that either the original OR the cover is better....or just better known. Yes, The Carpenters was the most shocking, but I knew some of them were covers.......but they DID have some of their own, too!

I heard some of the originals first, but I forgot the artist until I saw this. There were many that I had never heard of, cover or original. I never heard of most of these songs or artists in the first half. Dee Dee Warrick is Dionne’s sister. I didn’t KNOW that Phil Collins’ Grover kind of love was a cover but suspected it was because it sounds old. The songs that I recognized I knew were covers with the exception of the Carpenters. I never listened to them much. The Bon Jovi one is the most shocking. I still can’t believe it. I need to individually verify it. Sometimes the original is a flop and the cover becomes a hit.
