ABSOLUTELY! My favorite album is "Sad Clowns & Hillbillies". There is not one cut off that album I don't like. His duets with Carlene Carter (June Carter Cash's daughter) & Martina McBride are stellar. I had to hunt down who Carter was because I 1st heard their songs on Spotify & they didn't include her name. As soon as I heard her voice I was like, wait a minute, I know that voice. Man, I remember hearing the Carter Family as a kid & Carlene definitely has that same 'fine wine' sound. I love her. And McBride has always been my favorite 'new generation' female country artist.

Btw, I had thought it was "when a smoke was a smoke" for the longest time myself -- but it's actually "that's when a sport was a sport". It's the way he pronounces it, I guess. Also, as several have commented below, it was an autoharp he was strumming -- we used to have one, and they can be fun, as you just hold down a button for the chord you want, then strum. (Oh, and yes, I think that was a woodblock, lol.)

That is insane. I always thought the same and just focused after reading your comment and dammit, that's when a sport was a sport... Which I get too but I swear to god every time I heard that song for the previous 35 years he said SMOKE?! I guess that goes into the great 'misheard' lyrics bin! Oh shit, have we gone into that Berenstain Berenstein bears Shazaam Kazaam thing???

I always thought it was “spoke was a spoke.” I was today years old when I found out the real lyrics.

Thank you. Boy I had that all wrong. But in my defense, I had smoke on the brain back then.

I have always sang "when smoke was a smoke" wow!!! Thats really crazy. So now I gotta retrain my brain to the right lyrics lol
@dee_dee_place3 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was 'when a smoke was a smoke' because Mellencamp was a heavy smoker. Thanks for clarifying that.

I had to put this on my wedding playlist, my wife is from a small Indiana town like J. Mellencamp and this just fit in with the night and the "back in the day" feeling this song evokes.

So many songs that we can go to--my favorites are Jackie Brown & Rain on the Scarecrow. Can't wait to see you react to those!

I remember going to see Mellencamp on this tour in Atlanta. Had seats behind the stage, and I spent the whole night watching Kenny Aronoff play drums the entire night. With a few peeks at Lisa Germano mixed in. Great album, great concert.

Mellencamp is an awesome story teller. He's right up there with Bob Seger. Both my fave musicians and writers.

Sat at a picnic table with John and his dad in Middlebury Indiana. His dad was a truck driver with my cousin. Good down to earth family ✌️. Memories ❤️.

John Mellencamp is one of the greatest and most versitile talents your country has ever produced . I would put him in the same league as Bob Dillon . He is in the Rock Hall Of Fame , The Song Writers Hall of Fame and one of the founding members of Farm Aid after the release of his Scarecrow album . You could spend hours listening to his catalogue and never hit the next button
