This guy knows nothing about his cars. He has great stuff but he’s a terrible guest because he’s the typical rich guy who accumulates cars to score clout but doesn’t know a thing about them. Some of Jays guests are awesome because the guys really nerd out on their cars and know tiny details even Jay doesn’t know. But when Lee is there you can tell he’s just a total ignoramus poseur. Every single time he’s on it’s the same.

My grandfather bought a new Ferrari 365gtb/4 in 1973 when he was 65 as retirement gift to himself. He was a very physically fit man, he looked and acted much younger, so seeing an “old” man in such a car wasn’t that odd. I remember the day he brought it over to my parents house so we could all go for rides, it was the most beautiful car I’d ever seen. That and the Miura are my favorite all time cars. It was black with a black and red interior with the black and red special “Daytona” seats. I remember my mother being shocked that the car cost the outrageous sum of $23,000 (which is about $153,000 in today’s money), which was actually a lot of money back then. We lived in coastal Oregon where there were lots of great driving roads, and my grandfather took it up to 140 and held it there for about 5 minutes, after he made me promise not to tell my parents. That became a habit with us, he would often take me for high speed runs when he drove out from Portland to see us. I was 8 in 1973, and I remember everything about that car vividly. He kept it until he died at age 76, then it became my fathers car, which he held onto until the cost of keeping it in top shape was just too much. I drove it countless times, the steering was a bit heavy at parking speeds, but otherwise it was a mind blowing experience to drive it. The only downside was that I often got followed by strangers, some who would literally follow me to my house, so I had to keep driving until I lost them. They could’ve just wanted to talk about the car, or they could’ve wanted to kill me and take the car, I never was sure. It was extremely depressing when it got sold, but my father did get a sizable amount for it that made his retirement much easier.s

That's a really nice story. I like that you didn't just throw it in the back yard after it got too costly to maintain. You had a great run with it, got all the joy you could ask from it and then it went to someone else for them to experience the same thing. It's a suiting end to your story that you helped the car continue a great life and it helped your father have a decent life after retirement.
@Mike-rk8px

@@pandras8312 It wasn’t lost on our family what a stunning car it was, how rare it was, and how much it was worth. The values of these cars were all over the place in the past decades. In 1973 the OPEC oil crisis hit, making gas suddenly extremely expensive. For the rest of the 70’s these cars weren’t worth much more than their sticker price new. My father has a newspaper ad from 1978 from someone looking to sell a Ferrari 365gts/4 and asking $15,000. By the time my father sold it in 2014 he got $375,000 for it.

A guy about my mom's age (in Fullerton, California) had a Ferrari Lusso, and when I got to know him a little, about 15 years ago, he did tell me that someone followed him to the house, and started talking to him. Things turned out as the guy was local, and had a Shelby collection that he wanted to show him. And yes, I think that Gary went over to his house to see it.

Jay said, "Somebody 6' 5" could drive this car." The first Cannonball Run in November 1971, Brock Yates and Dan Gurney, who was 6' 2", drove a Daytona coupe from New York to Redondo Beach in just under 36 hours winning the event. With a perfectly straight face, Gurney said, "We never went over 175mph." But after getting a ticket (the only one they got) in Arizona, just to see how fast it would go, Gurney took it up to 172 and said it was rock steady.

@stanleymasterson1135
@stanleymasterson1135 Жыл бұрын
Gurney was full of sh*t. No tires existed at that time that could spend hours at 175mph without a blowout. It was also not possible to find a stretch of road anywhere that would allow those speeds for more than 50 miles or so. At NORMAL highway speeds TODAY the trip is only 42 hours, so to save another 6 hours would not require anywhere near those speeds.

@@stanleymasterson1135 42 hours is 65 average. Yates/Gurney averaged 100 mph. Google: 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX as fitted to Daytona. Speed rating 168 mph, so may not be so 'full of sh*t. I don't recall him saying 'hours at a time'. Besides, the traffic was much lighter then, so higher averages. I drove from LA to Miami in '89, with mostly empty interstate along the way, doing 90/100 for hours.

I saw Jay help fix a Dusenberg at BJ one year, the car was in the staging area outside waiting to go up on stage. Jay and the owner were talking and next thing you know someone brought over some tools, they opened the hood, Jay had it fixed in about 5 minutes. Jay's love for automobiles is always evident and his knowledge is remarkable. The Daytona is without a doubt my favorite all time car, great episode.

If you pay close attention to the pilot episode of Miami Vice, the first time we see Crockett sat in the Daytona, it is in fact a real one with a screen presence of about 10 seconds. After that, it's all Corvette based replicas and a couple of Testarossa - apart from one episode in season two where a rich lawyer (John Heard) also has a rather lovely, genuine Daytona in yellow.

Its a good thing that less expensive cars were used in actual filming because repeated use as TV or movie cars often damages them. Attaching heavy cameras and other filming equipment means putting various braces against the body lol!

alot of people dont know that in the testrrossa era they has 2 real testarossas and a fake one, there was one stock real one they used in most scenes, and the other one had a bunch of camera equipment to film the interior shots while driving, the fake was for the stunt scenes where they used a ford powered detomasso pantera to do risky stuff,

As I heard it, The production wanted a real Ferrari and wanted Ferrari to give them one as product placement. Ferrari refused because they didn’t want their car associated with the drug trade. But after the show became a huge hit, they changed their mind, yet demanded proof that the replica they were using would be destroyed. So they decided to blow it to pieces on camera.

When I was 21 years old in 1977 I went for my first big driving holiday, from my remote northern Canada town through the western states; I can recall sitting by the Pacific Coast Highway near Santa Monica one day watching all the neat cars coming and going, heaven for a kid like me who had been a car nut since childhood but grew up in a place where you just didn't see anything exotic. Anyway, along comes this beautiful arrest-me-red GTS Daytona, top down on a sunny California day, and I will never forget the sight and sound of that car. I would see one more Daytona in my lifetime, a green coupe in downtown Vancouver in 1979, and that sight and sound will also be there forever - beautiful cars.

Back in 1975, when I was racing in the SCCA, a Chicago guy named John Cooper had a Daytona coupe. One Sunday, I was standing in the pits at Blackhawk Farms Raceway and John was sitting in the Daytona, waiting to lead the pace lap for the next race. He motioned over to me, rolled the window down and said, "Hop in!". I jumped in, belted up, and watch him flip switches, hearing the fuel pumps come on, a ticking and beeping sound, and then he hit the starter and the V12 roared to life. I was thrilled! The starter waved him out and the field lined up behind him as we drove around the course. So smooth and wonderful was the ride, with that great sound. At the last corner, he floored it and we rocketed about 100 yards and then ducked into the pits as the racers roared by. I thanked him profusely and will never forget my 1.9 mile ride in a Daytona. About a year later, Mark Donohue mentioned in his book, "The Unfair Advantage", that Roger Penske had bought a Daytona when they were working with Ferrari. He said, "I couldn't believe it, $25,000 for a car!". Wonder where that car is today.

In the early '80s there was a Daytona Coupe that parked on the street in my condo neighborhood in Virginia. Red, some rust, just a driver. This was about the time just before prices started to really take off. I ended up getting a '69 Maserati Ghibli in '87, 4.7L grey-market import. Big heavy car, no power steering, drove like an elegant truck. Times were simpler then.

I was walking around Hollywood one day in 1969, just to take a look, and wandered into Hollywood Sports Cars. I’m 6’7”, and I opened up a 365GTB and sat in it just to see if I could fit. I did, but just barely, and remember pulling on that peculiar little door latch! The sticker said $19,000-something! I never got the chance to become an “enthusiast” before things got totally out of control, but I always thought of the Daytona and the 275GTS as the ones I would have really liked to have had. I clearly remember thinking of the 275GTS as what the Fiat 124s I was seeing everywhere “ought to be”.

When I was a kid, a person in my town had a 1970 coupe. The sound was unbelievable. Still one of my first picks of classics I would love to own.

Best we had in my immediate neighborhood was an air cooled 911, but back then, when we were kids they weren't crazy for the air cooled ones yet. I never saw it move, last I heard it sold a bit ago for an insane amount of money.

Next to the Miura and, God forgive me, the early British E-type coupe, it's probably the most beautiful car ever made. Not the cheap looking tacky stuff Ferrari and the like produced the last 30 years. Cars like these had style and a soul.

My dad ran a pokey little garage in the English Midlands, and one of these used to come in regularly. 1972 GTB/4. The owner didn't drive it that often so he used to give it to my dad to drive, sometimes for a fortnight. Never felt more cool sitting in the passenger seat of that thing, although apparently it felt like a truck when not up to speed.

tedium37, Miami Vice Ferrari Daytona was a clone body on a Corvette chassis, and it often spewed out blue smoke like a typical Chevturn engine. Ferrari was angry that the Miami Vice producers used a fake Ferrari.

The dual oil filters mounted on the top ,easy to get to with a primary and secondary filtration that only diesels usually have is great add on...All engines need that unlike having to crawl under the car to do it ..

Thanks for bringing this fantastic car to us. This has always been my ultimate dream car. I was 16 in '69 when Road & Track had a red Daytona coupe on the cover, saying it was the fastest car they had ever tested, at 175 mph! I've been in love ever since. I completely concur with your sentiments about the car, I've never seen another Ferrari I lusted for like this one, it was the pinnacle of the front engine Ferraris. By the way, that car was listed at $20,000 and change,

Thanks again for a wonderful episode. That's one of my favorite Ferraris. Did you know when Brock Yates had the first cannonball run he and Dan Gurney drove one across the country at breakneck speeds. And I'm sure you've seen the classic movie gumball rally. There's a red Ferrari Daytona spider driven by Raul Julia playing the suave formula one driver And before he starts the engine a classic scene is when he says to his passenger "the first thing you've got to know about Italian driving. It makes no difference what's behind you (grabs the rearview mirror pulls it off the windshield and throws it off the car) . Only what's in front of you! And thank David Lee for availing his collection for us and he's pretty cool driving these cars and not treating them like some portfolio investment garage queen. I saw another episode with Nicole Johnson and she visited Lynn park a.k.a. "Mr. cobra" and he is the same way He drives them all And glad you were OK after that horrible burn they really worked miracles

My fav ferrari ever! Such a simple design yet so perfect. I love the GTB a bit more than the GTS. A dark blue with tan interior would be in my dream garage. I love this so much because I kinda sort of almost in a way had this as my first car. I had an 1985 bright red Rover SD1 Vitesse which design was heavily influenced by this ‘daytona’. The headlights with wraparound indicators, the crease on the side, the fastback design. No V12 though, just a 215cui efi V8

One of the most quintessential Ferrari icons imho. 1004 Produced from 1966 up to 1971 with a 4.4L Colombo V12 indeed. Interestingly, from Enzo’s former secretary Brenda Vernor at Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop YT channel we did learn that this yellow apparently was the preferred colour for the North American market from the mid 60s into 70s and 80s for some reason. You’d expect red, but no..., typically this yellow instead. It certainly suits excellently. Thank you Jay and David for presenting this splendour.
