We coasted in behind a CHP 5.0 Mustang while the officer was writing a ticket. When he finished, the officer gave the three of us a ride to the nearest truck stop in Tracy. We hear a loud car exhaust and up drives a CHP 5.0. It did not look like this one. It was lowered, had wide sticky tires and sway bars so big you could cleary see the front one. The officer told us he would be back in 5 minutes and would ticket anyone still parked on the road. He peeled out and was gone. We all knew there was no getting away from that car on a motorcycle.

The 85 mph speedometer was due to “emissions limits”!? Haha. Such a California thing to say. No, it was due to the federal government’s “temporary” nationwide 55 mph speed limit because of the fuel crisis in 1974. Several years later the feds didn’t want you to see a speedometer going up to 120 mph when you were limited to less than half of that, so a law mandated the 85 mph speedometer.

After getting out of the Navy, I wanted to be a police officer. This was Vietnam Era, and in Arizona, to be a police officer you needed to be a minimum of 5'8" tall. (later as they allowed women to be police officers the height requirement was removed.). Being only 5'5" tall, I looked into the Arizona Highway Patrol. They had even in 1973 no height requirement ... and former military service gave some brownie points. I applied, was tested, put on a waiting list that was over 3 years long, due to limited need for AHP officers .... by the end of 3 years, I was in a long term job, and had moved about five times, and not kept my info with AHP current, so they just moved on past, and I worked for that long term job for 19 years. I also tested for local Fire Department, (Navy background helped) ... but their waiting list was over a year, and with moves and such, missed out on it as well. Though ended up being a volunteer fire fighter for the massive long term employer.

160 in that car sounds outrageous but i know cop car engines are not like stock engines, and if they were getting 25 miles to the gallon then the back end gear ration was pretty high and that would give them speed when needed, also the two barrel was not a stock two barrel i had a two barredl that was as big as a four barrel and you could tell when you hit it.

Ford developed the Mustang SSP for California because they decided their new '79 Fairmont foxbodies were better overall compared to their new '79 Camaros that were replacing the 440 Dodge Monacos.

I think the 2 best police cars used were the Grand Fury with the 383 and the Chevy Caprice with the 350....

What a great episode. I'm not a mustang fan but I thoroughly enjoyed this, and much of it was because of the guest.

I got stopped once by CHP once, it took the guy 25 blocks to catch me in that 5.0, I had slowed down with out even knowing he was there, he was nice about it wrote me up for 90 in a 55, I was easy doing well in excess of the 90 he wrote me up for, still 2 points...

I worked at a Chevy dealer in the early 90s, and we serviced Ohio highway patrol cars occasionally. Caprices, Crown Vics, and Diplomats were all SLOW, but the diplomat was the worst. I remember driving one thinking "how the hell can you catch anybody with this thing!"

Jay goes on about how slow the ‘82 Mustang SSP seems today - but remember that most stock Porsches (except Turbos) could barely do better than 7 seconds 0-60. Never mind how slow ‘82 Camaros and Firebirds were too. For its day - this was a peppy car

I have looked into the 90s 5.0 liter police mustang..California started it and asked Ford for a straight line fast car...then Florida bought them..Ford said we are going to design it to run flat and straight at 160 mph..the computer wasn't going to stop it..Double the brake power .double the radiator..double the engine oil and transmission fluid cooler..designed to run only on 93 octane.(shell)..so i believe it would mantain 160 mph..180 i would have to see it and ford would have to swear this is true

Much respect to this gentleman and his life long career as a Highway patrolman. I respect the badge always and have never confronted any issues with the police 👮. I guess in my limited issue with police there are always a few bad apples in the whole bushel. ✌️.
