Update to my original comment in 2017. I originally used Evans along with StopLeak as a stop gap on my leaky heater core. I drove it for nearly two years before replacing my heater core. I was able to reuse the Evans and it's in there to this day. It's just a good safety precaution in an older vehicle - no need to put extra pressure on old hoses.

A 50/50 mix of distilled water and ethylene glycol will not cause corrosion. The problem is that most people use tap water which contains minerals/salt/chlorine. These contaminants are what causes electrolysis/corrosion.

a neat tip for BMW owners, especially e36/e39/e38/e46 owners; use this stuff, and get a low pressure expansion tank cap, like a 1.2 bar cap from german auto solutions. these systems are pressurized far past what they need to be, and it causes lots of wear on the cheap plastic cooling system components. switching to this reduces that problem quite a bit

Love this stuff! If you have a problem with your cooling system this could very well prevent severe engine damage. In a system with 50/50 coolant the boiling temp is much lower and once your coolant starts to boil the heat removing property is greatly diminished. With Evans the boiling temp is much higher meaning it is still pulling some heat out when the 50/50 would be boiling. Buying you precious time to realize there is a problem and maybe get off the road safely.

@evanscooling11 жыл бұрын
We are comfortable operating in -40 degree weather, but have taken the coolant below -60F without it freezing. It contracts when cold, so it won't burst radiators. All glycol based coolants are combustible; the conditions needed to create fire are rare. It's a "gentle" flame like an alcohol fire and can be blown out. A water based anti-freeze fire is often worse because the pressure behind the leak will continue to feed a fire. T-stat mod is only for fuel savings (diesels) not necessary.

The coolant pump would be fine because it's not the type that would let liquid compression stop it. It will turn fine. We've taken the coolant to -60F without evidence of it freezing. At these temperatures, you're going to have trouble with oil viscosity and fuel gelling (diesel) so you'd have to have a heat source to start anyway. We've had good feedback from the snowmobile industry.

I tried this in my off road motorcycle that does not have a radiator fan, and it does what it says. The draw back for me was that your oil temp and water temp run at close to the same temperature, and I was concerned about my engine lubrication and longevity running the oil this hot, up to (380f). In a vehicle with a radiator fan, I think it would work great.

Read the bottle, it ethylene glycol, drink it and die about 2-3 days later from kidney failure. A couple of years ago I called Evans & talked to a rep, one thing he said was that it was flammable, he would not expand on it though. My guess would be it's amoulcified with a petroleum product? The only problem (if it's true) would be in an accident opening the cooling system onto the exhaust manifolds. One more thought that may be a non issue is with a high RPM engine and no coolant pressure, could that induce more water pump cavitation.

On the website they mention installing a 215 deg thermostat for diesel, though I don't know if gasoline engines need a different thermostat. In the real world, most of us will have a cooling system component failure around or over 10 years, and lose most of the coolant, so in theory only, the Evans is a life time coolant. New Toyota factory coolant are rated for 10 years now. Even if the Evans prevent all internal corrosion, components like radiator corrode from the outside as well. I live in cold climate , they use salt on the roads.For Jay Leno's cars which get driven once a year? Evans works great.

I was told by a guy @ Evans.......that for regular stuff like gas cars you don't have to drill holes in your overflow cap or anything. But for Diesels you are supposed to raise the thermostat temp. Making sure water & rust aren't in the system to begin with would almost 100% determine if you will have a problem.

higher running temps extract more power from same amount of fuel. the avg/std tech avail in any given era will be reflected in operating temps. (cast to forged alum, newer alloys, ceramic in testing now) a plain ole cast-iron ring seals well, durable if clean and oiled, when eng overheated, (glowing exhaust, blown hose, etc) same ring becomes soft almost to bailing wire. in that case, temp far exceeded design. see the inherent benefit of not overheating also.

the reason that car companies wont bother to use this product is simple. they know their cars will not last 100k miles without some part failing in the cooling system. gaskets, plastic parts, rubber parts, hose clamps, etc. every car i currently own, 1 truck, and 1 turbo audi and 1 v8 audi, have at least 1 coolant leak every year. the 1.8t audi has many a year, as i keep having to replace plastic coolant flanges due to cracking and stuff. that is their reason, their poor craftsmanship of the engine cooling parts prevents them from wanting to spend more money when spending more money would have given plastic parts made of metal that would last a lifetime instead of plastic which as we all know doesnt last long especially when its holding hot coolant or near a hot engine.
@JensEskildsen5 жыл бұрын
It seems most people cant tell the difference between overheating, and boiling. With evans you overheat faster, as it doesnt cool as good as water. But the engine wont boil over. This doesnt change the fact that youre running higher temperatures. So with water/antifreeze, you might be running 100c in high heat, and with Evans, youre now running at 110c(made up example). This is still overheating, eventhough it isnt boiling.
@daviddemarest27249 ай бұрын
It won’t hurt it because the coolant stays in engine and doesn’t boil and make air bubbles in head which is what damages

If it's safe to drink, then it is probably 100% Propylene Glycol. l read that this waterless coolant is part Ethylene Glycol. Anyway, it still means your engine is going to run hotter. This is snake oil. This is almost the same as running 100% antifreeze, and therein lies the clue to this snake oil. It's called waterless coolant because it is coolant without added water :-)

A 50/50 mix of glycol/distilled water will always cool more efficiently, but this waterless stuff will really appeal to anyone who wants a maintenance free machine. So, the engine runs hotter, with a thermostat that's wide open, completely unable to do its job. Leno admitted that he'd neglected the cooling system in his Dusenberg for many years, and then proceeded to blame the coolant. He has so many vehicles, how does he take proper care of them all? Sounds like he doesn't, even the high-dollar ones. He even says he uses the waterless coolant in his Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Good thing it's only mounted on a test stand. Cooling of the engine heads and cylinder barrels on a Merlin is absolutely critical. No one with a flying example would use anything but the proper ethylene glycol/water mix for which it was designed. I'm sure waterless coolant will catch on with vehicle manufacturers. Why not? They can claim maintenance free cooling systems, and there's plenty of money to be made selling the stuff as it's expensive.

This was a wonderful video and I will write a product introduction and review for the Door County Cherryland Ford Model 'A' Club tech and news monthly publications. We have about 53 Model 'A's in the club of about 47 or so people. A very active club considering the usual crummy Wisconsin spring and early summer and early fall weather. I formally had cooling problems on my 1930 40-B Standard Roadster and so have many other members in the club. Even though the cooling system is not pressurized that does not mean the engine will not heat up the 50/50 coolant to a point of blowing the vapors out from under the radiator cap and shooting out of the overflow tube. We are turning the water to a vapor ... with waterless Evans coolant it is not possible to boil over. There are no thermostats in the Model 'A's and inserting an industrial thermometer in the coolant in the top of the radiator of a idling engine shows 160 deg F consistently when all things are working as they should. The cooling capacity of an 'A' is 3 gallons ... " if you can't cool it with two and a half gallons, you will not cool it with three gallons." Typically we let the non pressurized system seek it's own level and what ever pees out of the overflow tube, pees out. Eventually a normal and constant level will be established. This product sounds perfect for our 87+ year old Fords that only are driven occasionally. ... Thanks again for the heads up. Craig Weis, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

1. This stuff is expensive as hell 2. In my experience, waterless coolant runs 10-40 degrees hotter than the 50/50. Thus, it is impossible for it to be "better" for your car since a cool engine is a happy engine. Hot engines do not last anywhere near as long. 3. Prestone Universal extended life is my coolant of choice, cheap, readily available, and i have never had any trouble with cooling issues.
@12gpm917 жыл бұрын
Cars built in the 2000s have a fan that turns on when the engine gets too hot. But I am concerned with how the temperature of the engine is measured. Does the sensor simply try to pass electrons from 1 wire to another through coolant? Or is there a thermometer on the engine itself to measure the temp of the engine?
@joshn9387 жыл бұрын
12 GPM shower I have a hand held thermometor that i use by placing it just below the valve train and I leave it there for a few minutes. May not be the most accurate way, but I can get an idea of combustion temps. Most cars like it around 220 or so. hotter than that in my experience, oil breaks down faster, causing more wear over time.
@whitefields55957 жыл бұрын
Josh, Thermodynamically the greater the heat gradient the more efficient the engine will be. While a cool engine may be 'happy' it's job is to convert the chemical energy in the fuel into mechanical energy. The engine needs to be as hot as Hell and the input fuel and exhaust gas ice cold. So I want my engine to be as miserable as possible for as long as economically feasible. So far the designers have compromised on something below 100C because of the ubiquity of water as a coolant. If other coolants evolve then engines will evolve to run much hotter.
@joshn9387 жыл бұрын
whitefields5595 That still ignores the fact that under higher temps, oil breaks down faster. As oil breaks down, the wear film does as well and your engine will need more frequent oil changes and will not last as long due to accelerated wear on moving parts. That is fact. There may come a time where we have figured out how to balance higher running temps and engine wear, but that time is not now.
@whitefields55957 жыл бұрын
Josh, I agree with this last piece, bit your original comment was cool=happy. To me cool = semi-evaporated hydrocarbons + moisture in the engine plus poor fuel economy. Most us us don't know where the balance point is really as we don't have the tools to measure all of the factors. Anyway bye for now.

But just as with the Evans, your cooling system won't remove heat as well, which is why engineers and every major auto manufacturer recommend diluting Glycol coolant 50/50 with water. So it COOLS better (although adding water also lowers the boiling point and introduces corrosion, the point of a cooling system is to cool the engine). Evans is a snake oil company, and even Jay Leno can be charmed by slick snake oil salesmen.
@looncraz8 жыл бұрын
Except it's not. It's a mix of multiple glycols, including standard propylene and ethylene, contains some corrosion inhibitors in case some water is in the system, and contains an agent to reduce toxicity due to the presence of ethylene glycol as well antioxidizing agents and acid neutralizers. This mixture is more efficient for cooling than pure antifreeze, but not as efficient as a mix containing water. If your cooling system is in good shape, though, you should simply be using up some of the extra capacity of your cooling system rather than running notably higher temperatures.

In fact it increases coolant temps and does a worse job at cooling than traditional coolant.
6 жыл бұрын
@@FirstOnRaceDayCapri2904 Here's what ALL the doubters do not even know or realize: Their reasoning for being against Evans Waterless Coolant is strictly because they are worried about 'heat'. If you have a cast-aluminum radiator, combined with a cast-aluminum water pump, combined with a cast-aluminum intake manifold, your stock temperatures will naturally be much lower. Also, Amsoil makes a proprietary double oil filtration relocation kit, in which the first filter filters all the oil at 20 microns, and then immediately re-filters that purified oil at an unprecedented 2 microns!! This system allows your entire engine to operate with literally zero friction properties!! Thus, a newly-restored engine can literally last millions of miles with no problems whatsoever!! And by utilizing this oil filtration relocation kit, your oil temperature will also be much lower. So I say combining this system with the Evans Coolant is the ultimate resolution.

I wish I found this product earlier on! I had a bad oil cooler leaking oil into coolant, and swollen up all the rubber stuff. One day, the rubber seal on the expansion tank cap decided to go, coolant temperature suddenly shoots up and after I stopped the car, after boil so bad that the ca just let go, and blowing lots of steam out. Now I really have to worry about whether I have damaged the head gasket! If I had this product in, I wouldn't have this issue at all!

In the marine world that aluminium plate would have been called a "sacrificial anode". On ships they are fastened on the stern, to be eaten away instead of the hull. And replaced at regular intervals. In the motor and aero industries the answer is glycol to stop electrolysis and freezing.

If your head gasket is blown there is nothing you can put into your engine to save it because it has lost the seal and compression to keep proper flow of fluid and without proper flow of fluid your engine is going to just burn the head block of the engine and doesnt take much to do that its pretty fast. Actually water is a better coolant and race cars run straight water because it does the best job of cooling better than anything but it is corrosive. But racers rebuild their engines almost every race so it doesnt matter to them. ALthough water will also not pump if your gasket is blown and then youll just be burning your engine again.

This is undoubtedly an amazing product & step forward for cars, but I've a problem. Just bought a relatively modern car, which has had this installed, owner said the fans run more than usual, not a problem I thought, but it is. The fans must have been on so much they've become very noisy and will most likely need replacing, but even if I do that, the new ones will come on more than normal, and with the related noise. Anyone know what to do, I may have to remove it otherwise, shame!

Some googling reveals that Evans is 99% Propylene Glycol. This is pure 100% safe anti freeze. Evans uses very clever marketing to draw people in to make them think and believe they need this overpriced pure anti freeze. The best coolant for an engine is 100% water but that freezes hence why we need a compromise of 50% water and 50% anti freeze. I suggest googling and researching 'specific heat' values for water and Propylene Glycol. This will then explain why 100% Evans (propylene Glycol) makes your engine run hotter as its a very poor coolant which is no good for your engine. Also because of the increased boiling point of Evans (propylene Glycol) it means if your cooling system has an issue you won't know about it until much later than pure water or 50/50 mix which is only going to increase the chance of engine damage. I would never use this rubbish, however, if you really want to then just buy cheap Propylene Glycol instead.

Would this product help limit the damage if an engine blows a head gasket? Or if a vehicle has an internal water pump (like a ford 3.7L Duratec ) and the pump fails causing the coolant to mix with the oil?
@pwatom225 жыл бұрын
If it does not conduct heat as well as a water mix then I have a few questions. Does this mean areas of your engine can run hotter than designed, possibly causing cyl head warping (rover v8)? What about your temp gauge? Do you ignore that when it climbs above normal? Very difficult to completely drain some modern cars due to rear heaters etc. You will be replacing coolant in your car anyway due to hose, thermostat, rad and water pump replacement at some point. To me, the reduced thermal conductivity needs answering before I would buy it.
