Hi Jay, great to see someone young having such a mature attitude. This was made about 50 years ago and humour certainly was different, but that was then and this is now. You are correct though, as the series went on Eddie and Bill did become closer even though, at times they still called each other sambo & honky, there was a deep friendship in the end. Also enjoying watching you watching Rising Damp, another great comedy.

The whole point of the series was that you laughed AT the bigot, not WITH him. Even as a teenager fifty years ago it was obvious that characters like this and Alf Garnet in Til Death do us Part were dinosaurs in to be mocked. And we did, even if some of our elders held these views. It is for this reason that I don't think these shows should be banned: they're now historical documents, showing a country trying to come to terms with a multi racial Britain.

Crippen was a murderer who fled to Canada in 1910 but was spotted by a crew member. A radio message was sent ahead and he was arrested. the first time such this had ever occurred, thus the radio reference made by Eddie to Jackko about radioing Harold Wilson, the prime minister on his yacht. Khrushchev was the Soviet leader, they being labour members would raise a statue to him. "On the slate" means having a Tab at the bar. Joan wrote the note on the back of the Newspaper bill

Some people actually thought Jack was racist because of the show, in reality he wasn’t, far from it. In fact his daughter in law Rakie Ayola is Black as are his two grandchildren. There is a video of Jack & Rakie on a U.K. tv show called Bargain Hunt on here.
@MrSwanny1822 жыл бұрын
Not suggesting he was Racist. But I know this lady her daughter got married to a black Gentleman and had Two kids one is black he is the older child the other white the grandmother calls the older one these little names ignorant names. I consider her racist in-spite of her having mixed race grandkids. Just because you know someone or are related to someone doesn’t make you not prejudiced. Again I’m not saying that guy was racist however your reasoning for him not being racist isn’t quite accurate.
@RltchieI2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSwanny182 I very much doubt his son or his daughter in law would have much time for him if he were racist & I very much doubt they’d allow their two kids to be around one either. I also suspect she wouldn’t go on a national tv show with someone who has shown any inkling of being racist. Given they were on Bargain Hunt together and seemed to get on amazingly, I would suggest my reasoning is fair based on the evidence available both visual & written. There is a wonderful BLM related thread by his son Adam from 2020 where he mentions his parents made sure to point out that Eddie was an “ignorant fool and loser”. He also goes on to say how close they were to two of the most famous black actors on tv at that time. Again, I suspect my reasoning based on the available evidence is fair, but you are of course entitled to your opinion.

There was SO much good comedy in the UK in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Another one that would upset the bedwetting SJW's was ' 'Allo, Allo' ' about the French Resistance in the war. It poked fun at all the nationalities involved - the French were randy, the Germans were kinky, the Italians cowards and the English idiots. And, in this episode, the way the men talked to the barmaid was normal back then and wasn't seen as harassment but banter. I had a Saturday job in a bar near a Naval Base, one night, when collecting glasses, I had to step into a group of sailors to collect glasses. One grabbed my bum and told me "I'm the world champion bum feeler", I slapped his face and told him I was the world champion nut crusher as he'd find out if he grabbed my bum again. His companions thought it hilarious (especially as he was their senior officer) and we actually all had a very entertaining evening of banter. It's how it was, we were adults. The pc brigade have made life utterly miserable.

Rather than being purposely racist, it a) has the characters act woke by choosing a black kid to pick a Santa b) has a behind the times elderly fossil who is a fan of Al Jolson. Done brilliant.
