He wasn't going to pot the last black at all, in protest at there being no special prize for a 147. He only potted it when the referee said "Do you want to knock it in for the fans?" More recently he did a similar protest, when he potted a pink off the last red instead of a black, to make a 146 instead of a 147.

Alex Higgins was box office in his day. Snooker needs these characters in the game!

I remember watching this live. Mark King's face was an absolute picture when he was waiting for the ref to come back with the answer. This is one of the most incredible moments in snooker to ask after the 1st black and then have the swagger to pull it off when many top players have never made a 147 in their whole career.

When I was a kid in the late 80's 147 maximums were so rare that you would get £147,000 prize for it, nearly S200,000... ...and back then you could probably buy 3 houses for that!

Yea i remember watching Alex Higgins, Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Dennis Taylor, John Parrot, John Virgo, Willie Thorn, Cliff Thorburn etc That was great competition those days! Ronnie for me is the best of all when it comes to pure talent though! 👍🏾

I don't know if Ronnie "carried" it - DEFINITELY an attraction and probably my favourite player, but there were quite a lot of big personalities.

Little bit disrespectful to his opponent, but you can do that if you have the confidence, he went through a stage of being a bit smug and the media were all over him for that. I'm not sure if he is the Goat, but if he continues for another couple of years and actually bothers to enter the tournaments he will be imo.

His opponent was Mark King, a journeyman player currently serving a suspension for match-fixing. Some people earn disrespect.
