Modern Sonic in Sonic 2 is a Character Mod created by DHedge akaSonicManPluia, featuring Marathon Base Zone, made by Texthead.
With the main mod being the character, this replaces Sonic With Modern Sonic, while also adding a new title screen. While featuring Marathon Base Zone, this mod basically changes all instances of the Egg Gauntlet Nameplate and replaces it with it's internally known name, Marathon Base Zone.

I think to myself as I watch this, would Sega have taken a risk 25-30 years ago allowing their developers to do things like this? No need to imagine, but look at how many possibilities of ways Sonic could be - the openness to allow others to contribute while keeping the past in the present toward a future. Does that make any sense? I wonder how many kids out there watch these videos and obviously feel different than us Xers'..maybe some older? Idk. To wonder what music, stages and creativeness we could have seen, where would that leave those today who are doing these videos?

Marathon Base is a hidden boss rush that was removed from the game files in the 2013 port.

that is false information. the true information is that it was called Egg Gauntlet, and it remained in Sonic 2 2013, and it was removed in the Origins build, along with Proto Palace and Boss Attack.
