Jayson Tatum. 2020 NBA All-Star. Tatum took a leap in his third year in the league, jumping from 15.7 points per game on 45.0% from the field (attempting 13.1 field goals per game) and 37.3% from deep (attempted 3.9 3's per game) to 23.4 points per game (15th in the league before stoppage) on 45.0% from the field (upping his FGA to 18.6 per game) and 40.3% from deep (upping his 3PA to 7.1 per game). Jayson's free throws also took a leap, going from 2.9 attempts per game in his sophomore season to 4.7 attempts this season. His usage (according to the GREAT website Cleaning the Glass) went from a good rate 21.3% (83rd percentile) to 28.0% (96th percentile) - which, if you want to avoid confusion- taken with the earlier stats, it means he both INCREASED how much of an offensive load he shoulders while increasing the efficiency with which he does it.
Tatum has an arsenal so adeptly designed to devastate defenders that it needed multiple videos. I have one dedicated solely to his pound stepbacks and sidesteps TO THE RIGHT. (Link here: • Jayson Tatum - Sideste... ). You’ll notice there are very few of the more traditional stepbacks or ones going to his left. I have those saved for another video.
It boils down to this: his bag is crazy deep. His footwork is phenomenal. It’s the foundation for him generating the openings that players in similar positions wouldn’t be able to create. He's a fantastic finisher. His balance is brilliant. When he bumps defenders, he’s strong enough that they are dislodged but hardly ever is it called because it’s just slight enough. He’s SO shifty. He’s SO crafty. From Drew Hanlen to Kobe Bryant, his attention to detail is on another level and that is what has accelerated his growth. It’s crazy that he is THIS good THIS young and making moves THAT hard.
All that good stuff being said, I do think the next step in his evolution is to develop a solid floater and have a greater willingness to absorb contact in the paint area. The playoffs have shown me that his north to south attacks aren't as potent as they should be!

He's just patient. That's the one thing I've notice about great players. They have so much patience and are never rushed. He just uses that skill, athleticism and length to play at whatever pace he wants to.
