Hey guys, today we’re going to focus on junk items because personally my main character has low strength and I’m finding that I run out of carrying weight very easily. This video is designed to help you decide what kind of junk is worth picking up and what isn’t. We’ll talk about junk related perks, methods for tracking junk, and most importantly which items you should never ignore in the Wasteland. Enjoy!

Gotta be careful since the game treats it as scrap and will automatically break it down in the workbench. Maybe keep a separate container for it. It's also zero weight, so no reason to ever leave it.

My semi-pro loot guide for Fallout: (And the weight/value ratio) Items to sell: Always consider the weight/value ratio: - A 0.1lb item valued at 5cp is more valuable than 1lb item valued at 30cp. The first item's w/v ratio is 50cp/lb while the latter item is 30cp/lb. -Keep this simple rule in mind when you carry to much loot and you wanna discard some stuff. You can apply it to any item that you carry for selling. 1/Guns: - Again. Use the w/v ratio if you wanna sell those guns. But generally go for guns that are modded out. They gonna have a better w/v ratio. -There are a few exceptions like the .44 Magnum. While most stock weapons w/v ratio is less than 10cp/lb the stock .44 Magnum goes for more than 20cp/lb so keep an eye out for those guns. -Some weapon mods worth more if sold separately. If you wanna squeeze a couple extra caps out of gun, you can remove most muzzle mods without spending any resources at your weapons workbench. Removing a compensator may lower the gun's value by 10cp or so. But the mod itself may sell for 30cp. That's already 20cp profit on that gun. -Collecting guns for yourself is a different story. Pickup any weapon that has better mods than your guns so you can cheaply swap those mods out for yourself at a workbench. Especially keep an eye out for mods that you can't build because they're locked behind a skill at the time. 'If you can't build it, swap it!' as my dear grandpa always said. (He never said that actually) 2/Armor and Clothes - Mind the W/V ratio if you pick up clothes for selling. - Armor is the same as guns. The better the mods, the better the value. (When modding your own armor, go for carry weight upgrades if you're the looter type. Now Codsworth can rightfully ask you: 'Are we pack-rats now sir?') - Never leave power armors behind. They also give you extra carry weight. 3/Chems: -Pickup any chem. No matter if you wanna use them or sell them. Chems have the best w/v ratio so these should be the last items you throw away. -If you carry to much stuff than just pop a box of Buffout or any chem that increases your strenght. It may help you out while you reach your settlement. 4/Provisions - Almost all alcoholic beverages have low W/V ratio (5cp/lb) so don't pick them up just for selling. Well they actually increase your strength for a short while. So if you're really desperate you can pop a bottle of beer every two minutes on your way to bring home that shiny new toaster that pushes you over your weight limit. (I've tried it. It's a real miserable excuse to arrive home all shit faced and addicted to alcohol. My dad also tried it in real life. Surprisingly my mom didn't need a new toaster and they divorced soon afterwards.) - Prewar food is worth a lot on the market. I always take them. Fancy Lads Snack Cakes are one of the more valuable food items. Dog food and Dandy Boy Apples have lower V/W ratio and should be the first food items you discard when you're carrying too much stuff. Personally I would never eat them. You better off making your own rad free and more nourishing meals at home. But well... Not everyone is the Gordon Ramsay type. - Any Nuka Cola you come across is great. Both the W/V ratio and the consumption of Nuka Cola is good for you. Nuka cola is also included in some crafting recipes. Obviously special editions worth more. - Harvested meat from animals are mostly great value. Usually tougher animals give more valuable meat. Except for those two headed deers. Their meat is quite good value even though they're not so tough animals. (I pacified one of those once and incited it to kill a deathclaw. As you can imagine my command was followed by 10 seconds of awkward silence, as she was looking at me and having no fucking clue how to even destroy a goddamn patio chair. Shortly after we were both torn to pieces by that Deathclaw. So scrap your Rambo Bambi plans off your Fallout boot list kiddo if you have such thing.) -Meat from animals should be harvested for yourself. Meals made at your cooking stations can have great perks. Study your recipes and decide for yourself wich meals you're interested in and wich meats you're better off selling or just throwing away when your inventory is full. Some meats may have higher value if prepared. I'm not sure about this, cause I never checked. 5/Miscellaneous items -Misc items usually have no weight so grab everything you can. Bobble heads, bobby pins, notes, holo tapes etc. are all useful items, that you wanna collect no matter what is the value. Bobby pins are also pretty cheap to buy. So keep an eye out for them when visiting a vendor. -Burnt magazines got no weight but they sure as shit got value. You know what to do... -Overdue books can be returned. In some places you can get 'Prizes' for returning them (Pretty lame ones if you ask me. But hey I'm not here to judge you. If you wanna carry those books around to get a plastic dog bowl one day... We have different goals in life is all I'm saying) 6/Junk Now this is obviously the meat of the toppic. (Please don't leave any pun comments about how I already detailed the looting of meat items. Thank you.) But I'll try to keep it simple. For junk items I use another system. The weight/component rule. Or simply ask the question: 'How much shit should I carry around to bring home the maximum amount of desired components.' Simple! Check the weight of the junk item and see how much components you get when recicling them. - Steel is used in a lot of building and crafting recipes. My go to is tin cans. They only weigh 0.1lb but give you 2 steel. 1 steel weighs 0.2lbs!!! So you carry around 0.1lb of weight for 0.4lbs of recycled steel! Pretty nonsense but still great value. (Pun intended) Forks and spoons are also great. They only weigh 0.1lb and contain 1 steel. (And since ghouls have this strange hopefully non sexual obsession with kitchen utensils, you can mostly loot it off of them.) But several other junk items contain steel that you wanna also collect for other components. - Aluminum -> Aluminum cans, surgical trays. - Copper -> Just collect anything that contains copper. Except for table lamps. Even though copper is somewhat rare and important for electrical stuff I would never carry around a heavy table lamp for it's copper content wich is only 1 copper. Best value here is fuses. They contain 1copper and 1glass for a 0.1lb weight. Glass -> Again. Fuses. But Cola and beer bottles are more widely available. They weigh 0.5lbs for 2glass. Eventually you'll have to settle with this deal if you want a lot of glass. Large liquor bottles offer 4glass for 1lb carry weight. Basically the same value as beer bottles. Wood -> You better off harvesting it at your settlements or buying it if you need a lot. But I think that clipboards offer the best value. 1spring and 1wood with a 0.2lb carry weight. Wooden spoons and toy wood blocks are also good. They both weigh 0.1lb. - Concrete is probably the rarest item to come across in the wild. I think cement bags are the only way to loot them. They give 5concrete but they obviously weigh like a fucking ton. If you don't wanna build your concrete structures wall by wall you better off buying shipments of concrete from vendors. Leather -> Hunt animals and collect their pelts. Recicle leather armor pieces if you're really desperate. They're found everywhere but they won't give you much leather. These are all the materials I wanted to go in depth with. Now I'm gonna list every other junk item that you should prefer. -Collect anything that has gold or silver in it. These are rare materials that must be used in some energy weapon mods. They also worth a lot on the market. - Collect any electrical and tech item. Like phones, hot plates, microscopes. They usually contain circuitry, copper, chrystal, gears, screws and other rare items. - Cigarettes, cigarette packs, cigarette cartons, cigars. These are the lightest resources of cloth, plastic and asbestos. - Oil is rare but used oil cans and lighters are the better resources of oil. The best one is cooking oil. It contains 3oil with a 1lb weight I think. - Animal parts from killed insects should never be left behind. They either contain acid or nuclear material. - As for Nuclear Material and antiseptic, ballistic fiber... Well just grab everything that contains them. These are the more important ones. And finally. For the love of god. Don't. Make. Sleeping bags. Out of pre-war money. Sure pre-war money is listed as junk not as a misc item. But 1 pre-war money is worth 8caps. Meaning that pre war cash is still a stronger currency than caps. Collect it. Carry it around, it has no weight. When you're at a vendor and you have no items to sell you can basically just trade in your pre- war cash to empty out the vendors' register. It's really handy. Right now I carry around a stack of pre-war money that is worth around 10.000caps. I never know when I'll have to use it. It's sort of a backup-bank system. But you can also do it with other weightless items like cigarettes if you're going for a prison currency style. Aw shit. Feels like I just wrote a fucking book, that no one's gonna read 😄

I can already buy all the materials i need, including, shipments of copper and screw for example. Resources and ammo will never be a problem, since im making around 4000 cap per visit to diamond city. Ive obviously invested alot into my charisma, combine that with my fancy business suit that ups my charisma, and sum grape mentats and im gud for business. Also water at 40 health recover, makes a great supply to carry around with u, case u run into trouble. Just wanted to share that with u all, hope it helps sum of u. Peace out.

I use a mod that makes all junk weigh nothing, so I pick up every junk item I find, I'm sure a lot of people would consider it cheating, I think the mod is tagged as 'cheat/cheating' too lol, but it saves me so much time, I don't need to have a fully memorized list of what items I should or shouldn't pick up, and I don't have to spend seconds, or minutes, figuring it out, it makes the game feel a lot faster and I like that

I pick up every thing!!!! I use to travel back and forth to the sanctuary a couple of times if necessary, even returning with no armor and one gun if I had cleared the location to pick up the junk I've stored in one cabinet. Since I got that perk that allows me to fast travel while overloaded, I just store everything in one cabinet near an exit. When I'm ready to go, I load it all up, exit into the common wealth and fast travel back to base:) If I see it and I can take it, it's coming with me! It all adds up.

Antifreeze bottles: 1 Mentats plus 2 Tarberry (prioritize allying the Slog as it's the only Tarberry farm) and one antifreeze bottle = berry Mentats for +5 INT. Add that to sharp armor and appropriate perks like night person, and your EXP speed rush build goes into overdrive (easily 20+ INT turning in quests).

The essential perk for me is the Lone Wanderer perk. I only have a couple of points into strength, and I don't bother with companions (I generally find them annoying as I play ultra stealth), and my carry weight is around 355ish... with some pocketed armour. I don't have to worry about what I pick up. Also, you left the Hot Plate off your list! I always pick those up. Great source of circuitry and copper! ps. Thank god for PC. Watching the game being played with the default FOV is painful. I have mine up at 110 and my gun/pipboy FOV at 90-100. It makes the game look SO much better. The gun doesn't take up half of my screen now.

One thing I would modify for the not picking up wrenches bit is DO pick up adjustable wrenches as those give gears as well as steel. Especially at the beginning when trying to get going as gears are used in the small water pumps as well as in the gun turrets. Combination/regular wrenches are only steel so better to get tin cans and such for those.

It doesn't matter how much strength you have, you will ALWAYS run out of carry capacity. My character has 9 str plus I am using a mod that eliminates the str cap of power armor and makes power armor a straight +10 increase, plus my power armor gives an additional +4 to str for a grand total of 23 str. I STILL hit my carry capacity every single time I go into a dungeon. I know 23 str sounds like a lot, but my carry capacity, even with the strong back perk and power armor, is still under 600 pounds. Not only that, but I load up my companion AND Dog Meat (I have the everyone's best friend mod) as well. The strong back perk is a life saver. As you rank up you can continue to run while over encumbered by using AP, which is great if you are just collecting junk, and at max rank you can fast travel while over encumbered which makes life fantastic. I have literally loaded up in a dungeon with well over 3000 pounds of junk and fast traveled back to my base to unload. I also recently moved my home base from Sanctuary to the Starlight Drive In (I got tired of all the NPCs constantly getting in my way and talking to me) and I emptied the workstation into my inventory and fast traveled with over 45,000 pounds of items on my character. Tl:dr The strong back perk maxed out is MUCH more useful that having high strength alone. The ability to run and fast travel while over encumbered allows you to collect EVERYTHING without slowing down your pace much at all. By the way, I always collect the same basic things as your list, but also pencils, typewriters, aluminum cans, and anything that I think might have nuclear material, copper, or crystal in it.

Best thing to do is empty your inventory into a non-crafting container at your home base. I.E. a cabinet, desk, cooler, etc. You want NOTHING on your person that can be turned into anything. Basically, temporarily dump everything. You then go into each bench and "search" for each item you need. That's cook, weapons, armor, Nuka, and power armor. Since you need every item, you'll inevitably have every item cued as "search." That means all junk/items you see in the wasteland will glow. Any container to use to dump junk when you're overburdened will also glow. Easy way to find stuff while you're walking and find your dump container. If you adjust your color settings, you'll have a white Pip Boy light and those items will glow white. You don't need a Mod for that. I'm doing this right now.

+P1tri0t i found that ultra light armour payed off more than deep pockets. yes deep pockets grants extra carry capacity but the lighter your armour the more you can carry (due to the reduction in armour weight) and it improves stealth (armour weight is calculated in your stealth chance) and it improves your AP. So while deep pockets increase 1 thing, ultra-light does the same while also increasing 2 other things at the same time!

+Battle Beard I used to use the Lone Wanderer but I found that the best of both worlds (carry capacity and backup) is...1. You have deep pocketed armor 2. Your companion has deep pocketed armor. I am currently using Piper and she has around a 150ish carry capacity and with deep pocketed armor it shoots up to around 230ish. Which is 20 lbs more than I get with RANK 1 of Lone Wanderer with Dogmeat. Yes you can have far more if you get rank two but I think that this is a good balance between not missing out on interesting companion dialogue, backup, and carry capacity.

One caveat on picking up buckets: if you know there is a power armor station nearby, go ahead and drop them in it. Keeps your steel supply for repairing power armor in the field. I also value desk fans and typewriters because of screws being relatively rare. Both items weigh too much, so drop them off at your nearest workbench or cooking fire...yes cooking fires store junk too. Especially in the beginning of a game cooking fires/stoves are already at most settlements; store junk even before you ally with a settlement...it's not going anywhere.

Nooo thats the real garbage here." Latter I realised its 0.1 weight for 2 steel. Value! Oh and lets not forget pre-war money. Also at start I didnt notice its weight remains 0 even in Survival mode and I was like "Cloth? No thanks.", but latter I realised its just free cloth. This applies to every kind of pen/pencil or cigar/cigarette. They literally weight nothing and they yield cloth and plastic basically for free.

It served we well for a while but it started to exceed my limit very often. I left things behind a lot too but still I had a feeling of missing out on so much material, I mean it adds up, right? - or maybe I'm just a hoarder XD (Only in game) The frustration got to me and I ended up getting an increased carry weight mod(500 + 350) named "Spouses embrace" ..even though it feels pretty cheaty it's just for junk material and multiple trips back and forth for storage just sucks out the fun from the story for me:)

I always reach a point in late game where I just can't be bothered collecting junk any more. Sometimes I even stop collecting caps and ammo! It seems to be based on level, as I'll immediately grab everything when I make a new character.

I pick up just about everything that helps build my settlements. Metals screws, coppers, circuits, etc. The trick I find is... when you head out on an expedition, perhaps even a quest where you might be collecting stuff, bring a companion who can carry lots of stuff such as codsworth. I find that I can load up and then dump it onto codsworth and load myself up to nearly overweight. To allow for fast traveling. You just keep your inventory low when you leave a settlement. I'll leave my settlement with an inventory of around less than 100 in my 250 capacity inventory system. I'll go out, start piling on the junk stuff. Get to where I can't carry anymore. I'll then call over codsworth and dump all non-essential items and weapons into codsworth. Once he can't carry anymore, it's on me. If I haven't finished looting a place or adventure, I'll fast travel back to a nearby settlement I own and offload codsworth and myself back down to less than 100. And fast travel back to the previous location. Repeat. And it's even better when you're in a power armor suit and have an inventory capacity of over 310.

If you pick up everything like I do that becomes easy. Just use his "never pick up" list.

Unless I'm near an armor workbench, I ignore raider armor. But for almost everything else, I'm a loot junkie. I have a 100+ level character that still grabs fans, and will kick a Deathclaw in the balls if it is guarding a typewriter.

I'm not a noob and I pick up EVERYTHING. But then trudging back to my base doesn't bother me like it does some folks. Walking back gives me the opportunity to get into more fights and pick up more loot.

@@edmartin875 yea I got to the point where I stopped getting stuff like forks or just one resource things. that’s one reason I like survival with no fast travel get into a lot more fights, but when you forget to save a hour in and lose it all it sucks big time

I run a survival character so I took the first 2 ranks of strong back with lone wanderer and I carry a couple of radstag steaks with me just in case. The one item I never pass up has to be microscopes. Despite the high weight, I need all the fiber optics I can get. Also anything with military in the name (ex. tape, ammo bags). Thanks for the video.

I have a pretty nifty list myself, but youre right on the money, however, PICK UP TYPEWRITERS!!! Yes, they are weighty, but with how rare they are and the scrap they yield, they are worth your time. Its not like picking up a desk fan that youll find everywhere. Literally the only thing you should drop a weapon for is a typewriter. Also, cigar boxes and cigarette carts are a must if youre scrounging for caps. Cigarette packs are not as worthy of picking up, but collect enough and youll save yourself from having to sell water early game.

I always pick up microscopes, crystal decanters, and military bags and of course military anything really. And sealed or preserved junk as well because it sometimes gives a little extra of the main item and sometimes some other item you wouldnt get for the wasteland version of that junk item.

i'm coming to FO4 pretty late in the day but this is what I've been doing, Collect everything, dump it all in a convenient spot and come back to it after you finish whatever you're doing, load your companion up to the max with dead raider/mutant armour and guns and take as much of the other stuff as you can, fast travel to a workbench. Store the stuff you want to keep, put the stuff to sell in another container, everything else goes in the workbench, repeat until it's all collected. When 6 of an item is in the workbench they all drop as one item, scrap it then. Some crafted food gives you extra carry weight so towards mission ends don't regen health, wait until you want the extra carry. Extra caps - the more caps in containers perk, perk mags once you pick them up, low health power armour, fusion cores with hardly any life left in them, make a water purifier asap, 8 caps for each one. Things I carry on me - low weight/ decent value - cigar box, cig packs and cartons in case I came across a trader. One thing I disagree with in the vid - Wrenches, they got gears and you'll need as many as you can get. Now I'm off to bury Marcie in an unmarked grave, she's whined at me once too often.

I usually pick up ammo (for obvious reasons) and I also look for Stimpacs because i need to at least have 10 before i go to a boss fight or mission. so those are always the key items i look for. Good job on the video!

I finished the fo4 3 times. My first was 11 str with strongback. I am addicted to picking leather armor. Also buying and filling power armor frames. While we're at it I love using stealth boys and flare for getting minutemen gear for my settlements. Here's a few tips. 1) Cut a raider head off. Stuff your items in the head and carry w/o getting encumbered. 2) After your companion is full. You can add more by dropping heavy junk and make him pick it up. Expecially useful in 180 lbs lead weights and fat man. 3) Before starting quest drop stuff at fast travel marks PS: If you don't have high str stick to caps chems and ammunition. Buying shipments was an option even with my 1 cha 1 str chars. You can sell ammunition fusion cores and chems for quite a cap.

Your companion is your best mule. When you're overweight, dump as much junk in their inventory and double your junk collecting. Also, even when they reach their maximum carrying weight in that you can't transfer anymore junk into them manually, you can still command them to go pick up heavier items like extinguishers, weapons, apparel, etc. You can even drop heavy items on the survivor and command the companion to "get that." They'll move a bit slower but you'll be lighter and still fast travel with you back to whichever location. If you have the automatron dlc, *SPOILER* build a robot with deep pockets and increase your junk haul even more.
