Not certain, but I think the quick rise of New Jack Swing (Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, etc.) in the late 80's sort of displaced it, and then it didn't come back. It's a shame, because it really is good stuff. Chromeo gets close in the past decade, but nothing really matches the authentic music from that time.

"Word" or "Word Up" was used heavily at the time this song came out. To understand the versatility of Cameo you need to go back the early days. Large band in the 70s that did classic R & B, transitioned well to the 80s. Hands down one of the best at concerts... Try "Why Have I Lost You" that will give you a good idea of their early days.

I would describe this as a "bridge song". Meaning,back when it came out in 1986 it appealed to the funk listeners of the 70s and was also liked by the newer hip hop heads at the time. This song bridged those two eras of listeners.

Classic. Suprised you haven't done more from them. Cameo is legendary. "Candy" "Back and Forth " "Flirt" Why have I lost You" to name a few of their hits.
