"Once I'd left school I tried to get into a dance school full-time, but no one would accept me as I had no qualifications in ballet. I had almost given up the idea of using dance as an extension of my music, until I met Lindsay Kemp, and that really did change so many of my ideas. He was the first person to actually give me some lessons in movement. I realized there was so much potential with using movement in songs, and I wanted to get a basic technique in order to be able to express myself fully. Lindsay has his own style - it's more like mime - and although he studied in many ballet schools and is technically qualified as a dancer, his classes and style are much more to do with letting go what's inside and expressing that. It doesn't matter if you haven't perfect technique." Kate Bush (Electronics & Music Maker 1982) ~ Lindsay Kemp also studied with the great French Mime Marcel Marceau and his movement developed more into everyday movement and living, elevated to Art. For instance, pouring a cup of tea in a very highly stylized fashion in his real life. He never stopped moving this way, he LIVED the movement. David Bowie also studied with him. It isn't any wonder that both Bowie and Bush have highly elevated stylized mime-like movement in their live performances and videos. Love it that you found Kate. When she burst unto the scene, there was no one, then or ever since, like her. A true and pure original! For future reference, it's best if you do just what you did. Just react to what you are hearing and feeling. If you can't understand the lyrics, don't fret. That's something you do after you hear the initial song. Some songs need more than one listen to fully understand them and it's not something that should hamper your enjoyment of your first listen. Please react to Wow (Version 1) and Babooshka (both of them are music videos)!

I'm as old as Kate Bush and have loved her since the age of 17. Her emotional depth set my expectations of what a woman is or could be. My wife doesn't understand my infatuation...

@@davidbecker8227 I was the person that introduced all my friends to Kate - including the man who'd become my husband - back in 1979. He still crushes on Kate, and I am fine with that.

Babushka means "grandmother"in Russian. The song is about a woman who dresses up and meets her husband for an affair, and he doesn't realise it is actually his wife. Check out the lyrics.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew this will be a VERY interesting reaction! This song first struck me the same as you -- what IS this? Then the incredible tune got stuck in my head -- just like you. That was several years ago, but I can still watch this video again and again!

When the song came out I was studying the Book Wuthering Heights in High School and the song bring back memories. Originally published under a male pseudonym, Emily Brontes tortured anti-hero Heathcliff was an orphan found in Liverpool which had been a centre of the British Slave Trade. His unknown origins suggests social question that few women publicly asked or even dared right about at the time.

She's playing a ghost from a famous Victorian novel, a young woman haunting her lover after a passionate, doomed affair. Hence the very high register in which she sings, the exaggerated facial expressions. Its meant to be creepy and mesmerising. This was a massive hit, was number 1 in the charts. Britain has a long tradition of gifted, eccentric geniuses, so the public is quite flexible when it comes to musicians. So you get songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, I am the Walrus, and Wuthering Heights. Not in the normal pop categories, yet widely embraced.

Remember this was the 70s and a lot of people were quite taken aback when this song came out....she was just so way ahead of her time. She is incredibly talented, writing Man With The Child in His Eyes when she was just 14. Also for this song, you have to know the story of Wuthering Heights a little to truly appreciate the lyrics. The one and only Mr Gilmore of Pink Floyd helped to launch her career. She’s a trained dancer also.

It's based on Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The song is written from the point of view of Cathy, a trouble character who is the center of the story. In the song, Cathy's spirit (she has died at this point in the story) is trying to cross the moors between her home and Wuthering Heights, the farm where her true love Heathcliff survives. When the book starts, we meet Heathcliff. He is old now, but still waiting for something. You'll have to read the book to find out if Cathy's ghost ever makes it there... :-) For me, the relentless musical hook in the song symbolizes Cathy's struggle to "come home" to Heathcliff, through the years and the moors. Wuthering Heights is one of the most amazing books, dark and mysterious, with an eternal love at its center. Check it out if you like the song. Kate Bush did a wonderful job of conveying the yearning, Cathy's state of mind, the epic battle happening between her and Heathcliff, the eternal bridge between their souls. Enjoy!

Look up the book wuthering heights. It will tell you what the song is about. Its an old classic by one if the famous Bronte sisters. Their story is worth looking at too. Wuthering heights was the name of a house in yorkshire in England.

This song always brings me chills as she IS the ghost of Cathy in the Emily Brontes haunting tale of Wuthering Heights. She is equally brilliant as she is weird. I love this woman. You need to listen to Army Dreamers all about a young soldier killed in battle. It’s equally chilling and sad as well (if you ever hear it or read the lyrics there is an acronym called BFPO and it stands for British Forces Posted Overseas) when you know what this is, the song will give you chills.. Love your reactions.

This song moves me. It’s brilliantly written and performed. I love how she sings from Kathy’s perspective and gives it that ethereal tone, the fact that she knew it was different and slightly weird makes me respect her more for doing it her way and not for the masses. Her motives were never to get rich and famous. She loves making music and her authenticity comes through. Did you know she recorded this in just a few takes and it’s basically unedited? That is rare in this day and age. Kate Bush is one of the most underrated artists of all time and her work was groundbreaking and highly influential to artists we hear today. But she is an original.

Worth pointing out Kate wrote this song herself before she was signed to record label, as a teenager having watched the TV adaptation of 'Wuthering Heights' here in the UK in the 70's... She's an extraordinary talent and artist and definitely worth listening too her extensive back catalogue.
