She is being ironic, sarcastic, about all those that just walk around announcing their problems and despite saying they are miserable, you can tell they love it.

I first saw her when she was the backing singer to Martin Metcalfe in a cracking Scottish band called Goodbye Mr Mackenzie back in the 80's and 90's at the Barras (Barrowlands) in Glasgow. When I say backing singer lets just say you new she was there 'giein it laldy' in the background. Might be worth your while giving The Mackenzies a wee listen as well because their tunes like The Rattler, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, His Masters Voice, Now We Are Married, Goodwill City and Blacker Than Black are in my opinion great. I've still got them on my playlists in the car.

The lyrics are pretty tongue in cheek - rock music was still deep in the throes of complaint rock and starting to experience the backwash from the grunge explosion, with the latecomers competing to see who could come across as the most authentically moody and miserable.. so Garbage were kinda goofing on that.

My four favorite 90's groups are Garbage, Cranberries, Nirvana and Oasis. I hope that you're not done with Garbage. But when you are, try "Bring It on Down" by Oasis. I got to be a teenager through the 80's and the 90's. Because I was an actual teenager in the 80's and in the 90's everyone thought I was a teenager. It was pretty nice to finally be able go to the clubs and bars without people thinking I was in middle school.

Love Garbage. Saw them a few times live back in the day. Always lit. The night I graduated college, some friends and I were walking downtown Santa Barbara, and we came across Garbage giving a concert at a bar. But the venue had the stage open to the sidewalk public from the side, and we just stood there in delight. Partway through the concert, Shirley had the band turn sideways to give the sidewalk veiwers a song aimed at them. Epic love from Garbage. Epic, surreal night. Thank you Shirley. Thank you Garbage. Fan for life.

So, I wasn't as bummed, but I wish that I could have gotten another opportunity to see them in concert.

During the 90s there was this fad in young counter culture, for popular reasons being dark and depressed to get attention became a thing. You wore black, black makeup, etc and everything was unhappy, and it was you against the world and if you were "depressed" it was a cool thing in those circles. Shirley was calling them out in this song or being sarcastic but it highlighted this particular sub culture. She does the same type of song with the song "stupid girl". I also suggest "Vow". It's a banger and their first ever single.

This was my favorite tune of Garbage and an excellent example of the great music we HAD in the 90s.

A lot of Garbage songs have great textures because there are two guitarists.

And three of the band members are record producers and everyone plays keyboards. Adds up to a lot of cool details everywhere.

I remember hearing Garbage's first album back in the day, and how it felt like a revelation. It literally felt like someone had opened a window, and fresh air finally came through the suffocating introspection and dour minimalism that dominated so much of the 90's. Garbage was fierce, but playful; technocratic, but refreshingly human; sexy, but winkingly self-aware that was part of the schtick. God, i love this album so much! ^_^

All Hail Queen Shirley! I think Version 2.0 was Garbage at their peak but their debut album sure had a bunch of great singles.

In the 90s Shirley Manson was probably one of the coolest female or male rock stars at that time. There’s just something about her and the music is right on!

Yeah! Garbage is a powerful band. I also recommend reacting to "Vow". It's a great song of them. If you want to know more bands in this "dirty and sensual" style, Placebo is an excellent option. They are amazing musicians as well. Cheers!

The song has definitely a personal meaning to me. I'm an artist and I often try to put my feelings into my paintings; especially when I'm sad, depressed and all that shit. Painting makes me happy. So I'm happy when it rains.
