What is up with other races of folks always complaining about runs in black folks' music? That's call SOUL and a technique they learn from the black church. Go listen to Taylor Swift if you don't wanna hear it.

for one thing when black folks sing we feel it, we have lived it and we have a understanding of a song that makes us go off on a whole different level that only we and the lord know about. When we sing we go into therapy with a song. It scares the hell out of white people.

mizpahboy i'm white af and I'm in love with black people singin', it's another level, specially Jazmine's runs
@mizpahboy75137 жыл бұрын
Absolutely...and allow me clarify not all white people are perplexed on why black people get so into it when we sing. But when something is spirit fill most white people have a vague understanding of what that entails, but with black people it's very clear. It's something one has to open up themselves to.

Y'all need to stop with the critiquing. She was only about 17 or 18 here so I don't think it's fair that people are attacking this because in my opinion she did one hell of a job for a 17 year old. She has obviously developed vocally, mentally and physically and is now an amazing singer !

Wow, people are commenting and tearing down this cover as if it was something new. This was recorded back in like 2005/2006. She was only like 17 or so when she did this. For her age, lack of training and life experience, she rocked this. For a developed voice, there is definitely room for improvement, but for where she was at that point, this was excellent.
@LipoMaae9410 жыл бұрын
jarrodb1677 how do you mean for a developed voice, there is definitely room for improvement? how would you describe her voice?
@thesangster10 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if she was 17 here or not. What she did was so amazing if she had done exactly this today would have been just as amazing. I wouldn't change a thing. This is coming from a professional singer. IMO.

There is a place for this. When you listen to the melismas that Natalie Dessay adds to Romantic or Baroque period arias would qualify as a virtuosic exhibition...so would Ella's "Airmail Special" or "Smooth Sailing". The key to this is not to say which is more valid...but how should I listen to this. Jazmine's ability to insinuate jazz chord progressions with her voice is amazing. Let's respect that...even if we don't care for it.

Her rendition of "Midnight" is so sensual in it's delivery that's it's almost orgasmic. I'm not saying it's raunchy or nasty or anything like that. What it is...is raw, emotion filled very adult oriented in it's feel. Anyone who has been through a separation of any kind and has felt the deep down longing for that persons sexual company knows the anguish of needing that fulfillment in the wee hours of midnight. Now you can lie to yourself and say you can deal with it, but we both know...when it comes down on you, there ain't nothing on earth that's going to make you feel good but that someone who used to go there the way you liked. and when she sings "Midnight"....you know she going there. Her anguish is your anguish, her desire for release becomes your desire. I will probably get some negative feed back. But it is what it is.

I've heard people say that this song is too hard for just anyone to sing, but I don't think that's true......especially if you are trained. Jazz, blues, and similar genres can seem pretty intimidating, but they are really, fun genres that allow you to experiment more...so as long as you stay true to who you are and don't try to copy others, I think a lot of people can sing this song. You may not sound like Jazmine, but that doesn't make this song un-singable :) In my opinion, of course ;D

Anyone trying to make a disparaging remark about Jazmine Sullivan is borderline intellectual functioning. Amy Winehouse did not have the vocal vocabulary, raw talent, control, timbre, melismas, runs, nor riffs that Jazmine has. Were Amy still living and you placed them side by side on a stage, she would be standing in awe of Jazmine's ability.
@patp26907 жыл бұрын
tristonfordummies Amy was a white girl with white privelege.
@sharkkeeper016 жыл бұрын
tristonfordummies You’re absolutely correct. 95 % of the population knows absolutely nothing about music...and even less about vocals. People mistake a dark toned voice as a soulful voice. I could see if Jazmines voice was untextured and poppish...but she has rasp and grit...as well precision. It’s like people saying jennifer hudson is better vocalist than beyonce...she is not...Jennifer hits tons of bad notes...I’ve never heard Beyonce hit one ever.
