@EarlofSuave308 It's based on how much the music resonates with me consistently over the years. Side two in particular.

I LOVE these Jazz Videos! Would Love to see another! You presented a couple of albums ( four actually ) that I had no awareness of and I am SO appreciative for that! So grateful to have found this video!

YES!!!! Ronald Shannon Jackson!! I love that man & his music..!! My first Decoding Society Lp was Decode Yourself, I heard the 1st track cover of Bird's "Bebop" and knew instantly I would fall in love with that record! I own all of them. I was just listening to Zane Massey's "Brass Knuckles album yesterday. Even RSJ's later output is stellar, "Raven Roc" & "What Spirit Say" Saw him on the "Raven Roc" tour. One of the most melodic & monstrous drummers! Very deep musician.

I was lucky enough to hear (by accident) Sonny Sharrock ....it was my favorite experience of being stunned by an artist who came out of left field totally...his recording Ask the Ages with Pharoah Saunders Elvin Jones and Charnett Moffat is a crucial date, as important to me as Hendrix' s Electric Maryland.
@loxeggcheese10 жыл бұрын
I had a similar experience when I heard that Sharrock record for the first time. The album was given to me with no introduction, so when I put it on I had no idea what I was about to listen to... I was just blown away!!! Also I loved what you said about Albert Ayler, that man was a god! His tone and playing is so wild and fast and he still manages to make each note he strikes so damn meaningful and intimate. Truly humbling stuff.
@dereckvon13 жыл бұрын
@fatbackfunk I agree that Ask the Ages is stellar, I have it on cd but would love a vinyl copy. Grachan Moncur will be coming up. It's great sharing this enthusiasm about the music with you.

If it's okay with you I'm going to ask my wife if I can come over and play this weekend lol. Great stuff as always. Again I had to write down a few names to check out. Thanks for sharing.

"This is one of the finest pieces of Music that I own" (re: Bernie Maupin) That is a mighty bold statement coming from you considering the size of your collection.

Damn! I'm taking notes. One of my top ten is 'Tenor Conclave' on Prestige Records. Mobley, Cohn, Coltrane, Sims. It's a real gem.

I should finally be getting Bennie Maupin's the Jewel in the Lotus in the next day or two. I finally found it (or won an ebay auction) for I price I don't mind paying. I am also a fan of John McLaughlin and Jimmy McGriff.

Gracias amigo.

Man I've been recommending Thembi to everyone on here.. That's an essential piece right there. And yes Sonny Sharrock!! Monkey Pockie Boo is insane."Ask the Ages" is my fave, that is perfection. I mean Sonny, Elvin Jones, Charnett, AND Pharoah? c'mon now.. And yep I knew you had some World Saxophone Quartet in that collection. Agree 100% on your thoughts of Ayler! Cecil is a beast! I Soooo want those Don Cherry & Parker lp's.. Any Grachan Moncur? "Evolution" is incredible.

I really want to get that Bennie Maupin record now. I had no idea he released an album on ECM.
@fatbackfunk13 жыл бұрын
And totally agree with you on Moon Beams.. gorgeous record indeed.. And yes I can see how that one would assist in that particular area..:) And yes that Maupin Lp is outstanding. Sadly I only have the digital version, need that one vinyl. ECM great label as is the Strata East label, which has put out some of my all time faves. Holdsworth is a god! Ya know the record I really dig is "Velvet Darkness" with one of my favorite drummers Narada. I love how raw it is.. Holdsworth is absolutely killing

@fatbackfunk He's spoken about it in a few printed interviews. But I had the great pleasure of hanging out with him before a show (1986) and I wish I had a picture of the face he made when I spoke of my love for that title.

Ayler...Don Cherry...Pharoah...Shannon Jackson...damn! That is some killer stuff Dereck. That Kuhn "Impressions of New York" record is really great too...I used to have a copy and traded it in for some stupid reason. Need to replace it at some point.

Your records are best.Bennie Maupin on youtube on vinyl is the most atmostperic that I have heard, maybe the best. If I can find samples on cd at cduniverse.com or allmusic.com, to see if the cd is good. Probably not. I have several of your records picked out. Thank you very much. If you click on my name and click on playlists, you may find my collection.
