Try this: "D/E" = E Mixolydian/blues, "Am9/D" = E _minor_ blues. In other words, it changes between E major blues and minor blues. Or slightly different "D/E" = E-based dominant-seventh licks like altered and diminshed, and "Am9/D" = the same but D-based.
