This is the way I learned to play years ago. One thing I would like to point out is by practicing these techniques in each position first and then learn each closed position of the natural, harmonic, melodic, and blues scales , all of the approach notes and enclosed notes exist within each of the minor scale variations. Not just the particular minor key but its relative and parallel major. Very cool. Thanks for the refresher!!

I've been playing for roughly ten years. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. I've memorized all of the pentatonic patterns, but I've always stayed to a blues style, and haven't been able to break out of my usual bluesy vocabulary. NICE LESSON ... played the minor pentatonic scale instinctively before I ever knew what it was ... all of my solos were built around it ... this now gives me some new options to incorporate ... not so random but with a focus on specific basics for riffs ... Hey Greg, this is awesome! I've always loved the jazz improvisation sound but could never figure out how they do it. Excellent concept of making the scales more interesting BUT what I would have liked is not only the improvisation but also what CHORDS go with the scale so the player is totally self sufficient instead of using backing tracks. For Example: Playing half the scale and then throwing in a couple easy jazz chords that would fit, then continue with the scale and then add more easy chords. some people out there (like me) who are at the novice/intermediate level) just want to sound good. Play some George Benson and you will have a better idea of what I mean - thank you for your efforts, I really enjoyed your video. Hope you take it to the next level.

Well done! You are correct in saying that most people trying to learn the jazz vocabulary just haven't found the right way of learning for them. I absolutely love jazz but haven't been able to make sense out of it in a way that translates to lyrical improv. I stumbled on your site and finally found a way of learning that works for me. Been playing guitar for 35 years and Jazz for 33. The secret: there is no secret. You have to study, practice and have some (not too much) natural talent. Shortcuts are very useful for people who do not want to study and practice.

Is your guitar tone sounding good because of the guitar or you used eq? How to make the guitar having that thick sound?

Thanks for asking! I use no effects on the amp and just roll the tone knob all the way down to get that thick sound.

Think of pickup selector and tone knob as your eq! Neck is for the mids + lows (good for clean/jazz sound), middle pickup is like a hybrid, and bridge pickup = hotter signal, more gain, brighter sound (good to stand out). A KZbin vid can probably explain it better 😅
